Frank Waley Collection of British hammered silver and milled gold coins at SGB auctions
We are thrilled to present the Frank Waley Collection of British hammered silver and milled gold coins at SGB auctions, 11th December. Having been off the market for over 50 years, this collection features some of the finest known examples and some of the rarest examples of the civil war provincial mints. Below, Neil Paisley shares his insight into this incredibly special third and final tranche of the Waley collection.
The man behind the collection.
Frank Raphael Waley OBE MC (1893-1987) came from a family of London based stockbrokers and bankers. His hobbies included collecting dwarf daffodils (narcissi) in the high Pyrenees which he propagated in Kent and led to him becoming a founder member of the Alpine Garden Society. Coin collecting was another of his lifetime passions, through which he developed a long-standing relationship with Baldwins. He first started collecting coins during the second world war, when gold coins were both bought and sold by banks - at that time he realised that not all the coins that the banks had were bullion and some interesting numismatic gold could be bought just for the price of gold - his granddaughter remembers him telling her that ‘he was able to buy some great ones in those days!’ Indeed, some of the gold coins here may have come from this period, but sadly they have no provenances.
This planted the seed of collecting and for the next thirty or so years he would visit Baldwins and started to build up a collection of coins. He would visit Adelphi Terrace and deal with AHB himself and many of the tickets to the coins here are in AHB’s own hand.
The Collection
He specialised in coins of the Civil War and there are some superb rarities such as the Hartlebury Castle Halfcrown and also some outstandingly good condition pieces such as the Henry VIII Testoon or the Shrewsbury Half Pound, and particularly the Anne Five guineas - which is the second finest graded. The collection also includes a number of siege pieces which we've explored in a little more detail here.
Collecting at this time he was able to acquire coins from major collections that had recently been dispersed - such as Lincoln, Murdoch, Morrieson, Lingford, Ryan, Paget, French and others, and over the years built up a substantial and important collection.

The World's Deadliest Coin?
Переглядів 1,4 тис.Рік тому
This Cold War coin was minted out of metal from a Soviet nuclear missile. Issued as a 'Token of Friendship', the Disarmament Dollar / Rouble was struck in the wake of the 1987 INF treaty, which saw certain nuclear weapons scrapped. Since it's made from part of a weapon of mass destruction, is this the world's most dangerous coin?

where can i buy the acid free envelopes for te long term storage and the cabinet's?
I do have a low grade 1882 penny without the h, what sort of price are they going for?
hello please recommend me a serious buyer who really buys thank you very much I also have several different coins
I have lot of coins
Where is the physical location of the auction? Can i buy from abroad and then arrive personally to pick the item?
Beauties! Nice video!
Yaaay, more hands-on videos like this, please!
Too much time wasted at the beginning. Should have spent more time showing the coins and talking in the background. Should have explained the condition terminology while showing the coin. In all wasted opportunity to explain the different values.
For the algorithm.. 🎯 Agreed , Thorough and clear explanation. The industry leading TPG, PCGS graders don’t wear gloves. Now, if we can teach folks not to clean coins 🫠
I have 1848 coins
Thanks. I have been trying to get my uncles, my grandfather and my wife’s great uncles ( who was killed / missing in action in the Air Force ) medals after getting their service history and medal issue history. One has been issued an Air Crew Europe star, with clasp. Whow you are right they are expensive! I managed to purchase an old copy, or reissue medal. The only one that is not original. Thank you for your interesting video.
Does any one know the answer to this question; Although you could only wear six of the WW2 Stars (with clasps) was there anyone who qualified for all of them?
Thx for the vid. I have recently acquired all the campaign stars and they are all real. 🍻 thx for the info on the air crew Europe.
I have 1853 uk panny coin
Im from Nepal and we have two medal in our family which my father of father of father receive 2 nd world war
Intelligent, interesting and respectful. PC Symonds left the force on 11 May 1892.
Nicely done.
This is so interesting
Excellent video
Not wearing gloves seems so unprofessional... You leave your fingerprints on each edge and rim of your coins. I prefer latex gloves. If you have correct size (very-very tight gloves, maybe 1 size smaller than your hand is), a coin will never fall out of your hand.

Through human history there are certain peoples identified as warlike. The Ukrainian's (I could say Cossack's) are one such culture that in my opinion is both cultural and genetic. Present Ukraine occupies what has been called The Russian Steps in recent history, an area as wide N/S as Ukraine from Poland to the Caucasus Mt's and actually extends through China to the Pacific except for the break called the Mohave Desert. The Steps are perfect pastoral lands much desired by invaders and impossible to defend. This was not the birth place of Horses, Cattle, Sheep, Goats, etc but it was a major center of the development of parochialism and horse culture. In recorded history The Rus (people who row not to be confused with Russians) from Scandinavia dominated the Dnieper River. Then The Swedish Empire, Lithuanian Empire, Polish Empire dominated but never really controlled a people who called themselves Cossack's. Next came The Huns and when they imploded the Hungry Empire tried to move in but never got further than Crimea and The Black Sea coast. This was the high point of the Cossack's, The Kievian Rus Empire (everyone wanted to declare themselves Empire back in the day) roughly Ukraine, Belarus, and Russia to Moscow but that came to an end when The Cossack's decided tax collection did not suit them and became mercenaries for the Poles, Lithuanians and Russians. This did not end well. About 1850 dominated Ukraine and progressively treated them as slave labor for grain production...ref 5Mil starved to death by Stalin. This is the period of time Putin points to for Ukraine being traditionally Russian and Ukraine says never again.

Fancy selling the boxes
It's mind boggling that in such a big and history rich country numismatics is a niche hobby. Ive been living here for over 12 years now, but im still active on a polish numismatic market and it's booming out there. Every Facebook group with tens of thousands of people and over here people collect 50p... does anyone know if there's any numismatic societies in North west? Would love to join, but can seem to find any online. I'd like to start collecting greek coins, but at the moment I'm going through literature.
A good video and insight into collecting. It would have been good to have discussed the condition of the tray of copper coins described as mid range as well.

How to sell this kind of coins
Not acording to lockdales they said they didnt want early milled coins that were graded some ms and otherd au with 3 in census . They said they wont sell as good as rawr coins they had crude low grade examples with deceiving descriptions 😂. I'll take my business else were . Colectors or buyers want the best as you said and all top selling coins are slabbed true facts.
I have a 1 shellings tow 1954 coin
