Roles, responsibilities, and a sense of duty can actually be liberating. The Stoics talked about how we all have roles to play in this life, which is partly why Stoicism is so practical in modern life. They also said we all have an obligation to use our innate capacity for reason to do good in this world. Let’s explore how knowing your roles, values, and taking commitments seriously helps bring...

      Maybe you didn't PRACTICE. Repeatedly! Behaviors become ingrained over long times. Especially if you are OLD. It requires LONG practice to change thoughts and behaviors. Simply reading a book is not sufficient. Change requires repetition! Try harder. You CAN teach an old dog new tricks.

    So in other words, they way I look at the events and situations, in which i am involved and of which I have no control, is what determins if those events are a source of suffering or not. It is my perception and judgment of the events that makes them a source of suffering not the event itself.

    Thanks for sharing all this. I relate to so much of what you say here. I've had a history of public speaking fears and find myself making excuses at times to avoid doing it as well. The TED or TED-X opportunity is huge, and I would like to present there one day. (But honestly, I probably would have let that opportunity slip by too if I didn't feel 'ready'.) To me, Spirituality can be a difficult topic to discuss, because it means something different or it may have different associations for everyone. The ideas of what spirituality is can range from practical and sensible all the way to otherworldly or mystical. For some, it's a religious idea, for others it's not. Some people like the word. Some don't... My most recent book covered some spiritual ideas, and I've had some people show no interest in reading it just because they don't like spirituality, when I suspect my 'version' of spirituality is nothing like what they're even thinking... oh well. Btw, I also appreciate you sharing your personal wins and misses - that's very helpful and I look forward to catching more episodes. You have a lot of wisdom to share.

    Thank you, Brechen. I'm glad you mention that we shouldn't get into mindfulness just for the benefits (even though there are many) because the one who is after benefits the most, is likely to be disappointed that a few mindfulness sessions didn't do much for them, and quit. But quitting mindfulness doesn't help anyone. And you're right, much of the benefit isn't even for the self, it's for all of us. I prefer being around mindful people, if I have the choice. It is a practice we have to stick with for the long haul, being present more often, being more aware, not dwelling on the past or fantasizing about the future too much. It's living this life whole-heartedly. Mindfulness also helps us find peace and clarity - and from there, hopefully contentment or happiness.

    I also think some form of balance is important, and often we can take something useful from different philosophies and bridge them together. There's not just "one way" - there can be many ways that don't have to be in conflict. I appreciate the way you explain the similarities/differences between Buddhism/Stoicism - as that makes a lot of sense to me.

    • @themindfulstoic

      Absolutely. I think one can take from various philosophies and wisdom traditions to shape their own personal philosophy.

    This channel is great. I cannot really express how grateful I am to you for uploading this video. Your voice is very soothing. Thankyou very much. If it is possible can you upload a longer version of this video? Like giving some more time to think about difficulties and envisioning overcoming them. I hoped if there was some more time to think. Due to the lack of enough time I wasn't able to finish imagining it. Thanks again.

      I can't express how grateful I am for this comment. Feedback like this fuels me to keep going. It's hard to keep this channel going. I just finished recording a video. I had to get up at 4:30AM to fit that in along with my other responsibilities for the day. It will take some time, but I'll consider some longer meditations in the future. Thank you for watching.

    Thank you for sharing your summary/review - I like the idea of the inner score card. Not everything in life is easily measured and quantifiable though, so we may need to judge for ourselves how well we are on the path to living up to our values. It sounds to me like the actual message is that an overinflated ego is the enemy, but I guess the final book title was shorter and catchier.

    • @themindfulstoic
      @themindfulstoic 11 місяців тому

      Thank you for this thoughtful comment. It's true that not everything can (or should) be measured. Sometimes, at the end of the day, if I can look at my family and they seem healthy and happy, then I consider that an amazing day (regardless of all the other things that may have happened).

    Thanks for the 27 Takeaways - I've read other books by Ryan Holiday, but haven't gotten to this one yet. These are certainly all great principles worth reflecting on and living by. Something I've also learned is that if you truly understand how your disciplined path is helping you to get where you want to be, then you can have more fun in the process of being disciplined. So discipline doesn't always have to be us "forcing" ourselves into something. Part of my journey has been learning to enjoy and have fun with the "disciplined path."

    I believe I read parts of the book years ago, but I appreciate your concise bullet summaries. I like the practice of being able to go without things that appear to be needs, but really are not. Some people find it unbearable to deal with a minor inconvenience even for a short period. That means if something major or disruptive happens, they'll hardly be able to deal with it. So it seems life is a practice for being ready for bigger challenges to come our way. Thank you.
