    I've always been curious as to the depth of the waters that anglers are fly fishing. You see, over here in the states, we have lake and pond locked trout, but you won't take them off the surface during the mid day, on account of predation. Early morning and just at dusk, and of course all night long. Otherwise you gotta go deep. At least 6 feet. I would love to fly fish a lock from a boat, and use only dry flies. That would be quite a change from how we do it over here.

    A beautiful Video and my first time to see it. It brought back loads of happy memories growing up in the Village. Well done to all concerned on taking on such a big task, those events don’t just happen- it takes a lot of hard work and cooperation. Well done on such a great success. Kathleen (Quigley) Noone.

      I’d like to hear a little more too about why the original weir was not removed and river returned to natural, historical condition. Was construction of the fish pass more inexpensive?

    "Pristine rivers and lakes"... dont make me laugh... serious exaggeration in this clip. Anyone thinkin of coming to Ireland to fly fish.. don't bother... go to Slovenia instead .. immaculate rivers with superb visual fishing. Slovenia is also cheaper all round... irish rivers and lakes are finished ... what hasn't been polluted has been fished or netted out by those who dont believe in catch and release .. I have lobbied with my local club to stop the raw sewage into the boyne but it went nowhere... if not enough people care politicians certainly wont

    • @Unborn-Stillborn

      @adebahn yeh but that's nothing like it used to be either. I have fished both rivers and lakes for over 50 years and the decline in both is staggering. And don't get me started now just about east euros killing everything in lakes and rivers but also netting the canals. It's a disgrace. As a young angler I only wish some day you get to fish the quantity and quality of fish I did in my young days.

    • @Unborn-Stillborn
      @Unborn-Stillborn 4 роки тому

      @adebahn pollution is the least of your trouble lad. Until people stop killing juvenile fish and accept the fact that its illegal. Most of eastern Europe is fishless and we are heading that way. I'm too old to pussy foot around so I'll say it as it is... east Europeans dont give a fuck about stock conservations. I have caught more east euros pretending they cant read signs or speak English when I confront them about killing pike or fishing for salmon without a licence. Unless they change their attitude ireland will end up like the fishless country they left.

      It's not all doom and gloom, there are lots of problems, but like you I have been fishing for over 50 years and three rivers near me have been fishing really well the last couple of years. I am in West Wicklow 5 miles from the Slaney and 5 miles from the Liffey, a little further south on the Wicklow Carlow border is the Derneen, a small river with an excellent head of wild trout and an very large average size for this type of stream. So not all is lost.

    • @Unborn-Stillborn
      @Unborn-Stillborn 3 роки тому

      @@TheBdylan23 not all is lost is true. I still fish the boyne which is still good because it has good clubs all along it. Rivers like the Barrow has been decimated. There are no clubs on the upper barrow so no one to stop the east Europeans from raping it. I used to catch excellent pike and trout all along it, now that's gone. As are many of the small lakes in cavan. You shouldn't advertise what rivers are still good, unless you want unscrupulous visitors to clean it out. Trust me ...

      I have to agree. I couldn't believe the Srah river which flows into lough mask is one of the top 6 most polluted river in the entire country. Lough mask is wrecked, the mayfly is gone at least in any good numbers. I have seen fishing declining rapidly over the past 25 years and I'm afraid to say all the talking in the world is not going to make it better. I am not so optimistic about the whole situation.

    Look at the drop at the top - it will not facilitate lampreys and is no better for eels than what was there before - despite this development being specially mentioned as being an eel pass in Irelands' EMP. We also have Bennettsbridge (and others) downstream and "The basin" upstream so it is of local benefit only even for salmonids. There will be a small hydro scheme here and such schemes are not regulated in Ireland. We are not making any significant attempts to open up eel migration pathways in Ireland.

    • @nicholasgrubb
      @nicholasgrubb 8 років тому

      The problem is, there has been so much crossing with escaped farm stock, that salmon have lost the ability to jump anymore. Besides what is the point of them going any further upstream, when all their old spawning grounds are now completely and utterly shaded over by willow and alder and all the life sustaining ranunculus weed gone. Because its binding roots are no longer there, all the fine sands and silts are migrating downstream, smothering the spawning gravels. NO that can't be right. It was the cattle which were getting into the streams that were stirring up the muds and fine silts. Confused? No need to be. There were weirs on these rivers for the previous several hundred years and cattle in them up to their necks for the previous thousands. Were the rivers full of salmon then or empty. Stop chasing red herrings! Deal with the tunneling an deal with the sea cages.

    • @EcofactIe
      @EcofactIe 8 років тому

      How do we know that there are less salmon and trout in shaded stretches of river? Electrofishing is far more efficient in open rather than tunnelled stretches of river - so IFI research underpinning the conclusion that there are less salmonids in tunnelled stretches is flawed. Trees provide cover and large woody debris provides habitat for fish. Allochthonous inputs of leaves provide food - directly though insects falling from trees, indirectly by providing leaf litter for shredders. The upper Nore has been ruined by drainage, peat harvesting and agricultural pressures. Few farmed escapees have ever entered the Nore.

      @@EcofactIe my god anyone thinks that no trees is good for rivers is mad i agree 100 percent that vegetation is good for salmon 100 percent and for eels and trout
