    Ironic that the two best players of their era both wore the same number. Both were fierce competitors. And which one being the greatest depends on which language you speak at home. Even more ironically, both were friends for decades. RIP Rocket & Gordie

      And from what I’ve read that bothered his teammates and other players around the league. Gordie set the bar for performance and wouldn’t ask for a raise. Therefore no one received a raise.

    Could the best Montreal Canadiens team win today? They’re a lot smaller and slower

    • @RangersGirlJackie99
      @RangersGirlJackie99 2 роки тому

      Could the best modern team win then? They were a lot stronger and tougher. There's not anywhere near the level of hooking, slashing, holding, or hitting today; no helmets, no masks, barely any pads, wooden sticks with no curve in the blade. Nah, I don't think even the best players today would make it in the minors in that era. Would they win today? Idk, probably not, there's really only two measures of a winner in today's game and that's speed and skill, that was only a small part of the package back then.

    • @rickrick5041
      @rickrick5041 2 роки тому

      @@RangersGirlJackie99 I’m with you on most of what you say. They didn’t have the science and equipment back then re strength and endurance training but they still were very strong like Tim Horton, Bobby Hull, Howe etc. Today they still have Chara and probably others. I disagree and think they had more skill back then but overall less speed. You don’t have to have top speed to score goals or prevent them. Doug Harvey, Wayne Gretzky, Phil Esposito and others didn’t have huge speed. I think the Montreal Canadiens that won 5 Stanley Cups in a row would beat any team today.

    • @RangersGirlJackie99
      @RangersGirlJackie99 2 роки тому

      @@rickrick5041 I think I agree with you for the most part on skill as well, was just thinking as far as emphasis is concerned where today they put so much into skills coaches, shooting coaches, skating coaches, etc. Do I think that automatically makes them more skilled? Probably not. I think it's more at the forefront because it's pushed there, whereas those older guys it was all natural, pure talent and learning in game situations. There's this clip of the pocket rocket coming over the blueline in his NHL greatest players features where he does this little double clutch on his edge and it's so damn smooth, I don't think you can teach stuff like that, and that's where the skill lies for me in the old days. I like to reference football (the European kind lol) where there's been a similar evolution away from physical hard nosed play towards speed and skill. Comparing like C. Ronaldo to someone like Georgie Best or Bobby Moore, it feels like players in the modern era are more a product of the training they get rather than the talent they naturally have. Obviously they're still very talented, but I don't think they'd have the tenacity, toughness, or awareness to survive, let alone dominate, in an era where "defenders were allowed to defend" so to speak. Really I think I just misinterpreted your original comment to some extent lmao it happens every now and then. Very nice to hear from someone with fleshed out opinions on these sort of things regardless though, and being a student of history on many fronts, it's always lovely to get another perspective. Good stuff!

      Which best team, rather, is the question. The team that won 5 straight in the 1950s vs the team that won 4 straight in the 1970s. That 1970s team had not only multiple hall of fame players, but an unusual number of them had the brains to win as coaches and GMs until recently. - the all-time best GM, Sam Pollock - the all-time best coach, Scotty Bowman - the best goalie of the decade and one of the all time greats, Ken Dryden - the best blue line in history, with 3 hall of famers, a mix of great offense and stay home defense, Larry Robinson, Guy Lapointe and Serge Savard. Two of them became cup-winning GMs and coaches. Could they compete in today's NHL? Yes. They're big, but also could skate and hit. - the best forward of the 1970s, Guy Lafleur. He was fast and talented, he doesn't need to be big - one of the best centres of the decade, Jacques Lemaire, who was a student of the game and would up becoming a cup-winning coach - the best all-time defensive forward, Bob Gainey, for whom the Selke Trophy had to be created. Also, a cup-winning GM. The scary part? These hall of famers were all at their peak. That's without even counting other hall of famers that played past their peak, like Yvan Cournoyer who by the time he became captain had already won 6 Stanley Cups and knew what you had to do to win. Who learned that under none other than Jean Beliveau. And this hall of famer mentoring across generations happened at every position. You know how Mario learned to become a winner after playing with Wayne in 1987? Imagine a whole team like that. They didn't just win games, they dominated in every way possible. So yes, the best Canadiens team would win today. Teams of today play a game very similar to the Soviets, very scientific and fast and year round training, but they also have lots of parity between teams. You're lucky to have 1 hall of famer. You couldn't come close to assembling half that team, they were that good. The fascinating part of human nature is how when you put the best people at everything in one room, the best become even better because they are learning more, and are no longer slowed down by mediocre teammates and coaches. You can't assemble such an all star team today because of parity.

    • @rickrick5041
      @rickrick5041 2 роки тому

      @@humankirk9196 Thanks very much for the information and superb analysis. So both teams would win today and I agree. Then you can start looking at some other teams like the Bruins with Bobby Orr and Esposito etc., Edmonton with Gretzky, Detroit with Howe, Lindsey, Delvecchio etc. There’s also the Leafs with Mahovlich, Keon, Horton, Brewer, Baun, Stanley, Kelly, Bower, etc. and then the 50-51 Leafs

      Apparently you’re unfamiliar with that era of hockey. The goalies didn’t wear masks, their padding was almost non-existent and if they got busted up, they got stitches and went back in the game. Terry Sawchuck had over a thousand stitches in his career, and had over 100 shutouts, most of them when the NHL had only six teams.

I still have a "EATON Tru-Line Intermediate Gordie Howe autographed, straight blade L 6" hockey stick which the T E Eaton catalogue sold for the huge price of $1.75. Among many "great" hockey players, I still consider Gordie to be the greatest.
