Que complicado 😐 , no se porque desarme el reel
Tony, I don’t have any of these but I have collected all the MLZ Shimanos. I have two 10s, 20, 40, two 50s, and two 69s. I like the MLZ a lot. I don’t care for fast-cast reels because of the AR setup. These ones like yours are very nice looking reel\s. The MLZ reels also only have a pinion bearing. -Good video! - Chris
I did not know that a Mitchell Pro is actually a French Mitchell. I collect the saltwater Mitchells and have about 70 of them in my collection. I admit to having at the least disdain and at most outright contempt for the way Pure Fishing uses and abuses the Mitchell name to try to market what are absolutely not true Mitchells. They should use a different name or something. There are some high end saltwater Mitchells such as the 498 Pro or ProX that I am very familiar with. I have seven 498s in four different models but all are French.using shim washers in spinning reels is an art form. I’m getting better at it but it takes finesse to do it right. I own many of what Mitchell calls their “Sport” models including the 396, 486, 488, 496, and 498. I’ve got all of them. They are not as different from the originals as the 300 Pro appears to be. I have used the Briwning housing plate seals in all my big saltwater Mitchells. Browning added these seals when they briefly owned Mitchell after Mitchell went bankrupt. A lot of the cosmetics that Mitchell added to these newer models is sort of uniform across their entire model line. I like that feature since it helps you to recognize them easier. I have a 300A, C, and S that have differences from the original model. Other Mitchell models do this. An example would be the 306A - a reel I like a lot. Tony, this was a great video as I did not know the 300 Pro. - Chris. PS.. Mitchell over-engineering is legendary!
Hi Tony, I just got a Fin Nor Ahab 20 for my vintage spinning reel collection and for surf fishing. From what I’ve been able to find out there are very few if any parts available for these Ahab reels. Did you know that now that Pure Fishing has Fin Nor they are using the brand just to market a line of Fin Nor sunglasses. This made me sick! Very good video though I do have a few questions. - Chris
Hi Chris, Yes, these are nice reels. not many of them out there. Thanks for watching! - Tony
@@backonthebenchreelsTony, It took me two years to finally find an Ahab 20. My reel is not quite the cosmetic quality as the one you did. I know I’ll have a massive cleaning task when it arrives. I recently got the truly rare Fin Nor spinning reel late last summer - a Gar Wood Jr. Fin Nor Tycoon No. 4 spinning reel. If you don’t know this one look it up. Mine is absolutely mint - not so much as a smudge or scratch. I’d never use it as it is just too perfect and beautiful. If I had your e-mail I’d load you up with photos of remarkable vintage spinning reels from my collection. By the way, late last week I completed my series of all the Daiwa vintage black/gold BG reels. I even have two gorgeous BG10 reels. I have no idea what I might go after next. I also finished my collection of all the Abu Garcia center drag reels. I actually have a perfect CD6 8000BG center drag that has never been used. It is the only center dragsuitable for saltwater fishing (except maybe a 7000) I think I like it almost as much as my Abu Suveran. I have over 420 vintage reels now! (Boy my wife is mad at me!) LOL - Chris
I have a Mitchell 300 I bought in the 70s
You know Mitchell was the one company that gave Penn a run for their money. Outstanding design (a little fancy for the longevity of a Penn) but I still have my father’s first Mitchell. I custom painted it sadly but that’s what boys do at 13. 😂 I might just stop making my videos and just watch yours! You really do a great job - coming from the village idiot, I hope you see the compliment in there.
I totally agree with you about Mitchell. They were a serious player in the game back in the day. I have my fathers Mitchell 410 and it still works pretty good considering all the miles we put on it when I was a kid. My Grandfather had a 300 that I used too but I unfortunately when he passed I was unsuccessful finding the reel. I did find the rod that it was attached too though. It was an old school Berkeley Cherrywood. Appreciate the support and the comments Steve! And don't stop doing your videos! We need more of them out there in the world!! Take Care. - Tony
Wow!! Very nice! I only know of one other person who has one of these gems in that condition. He doesnt want to let go of his either! I don’t blame him.
Ok Tony - I’ve now watched THREE of your videos and haven’t recorded one in weeks! I’m no shamed into getting back to work! lol. You give great advice man. ❤❤ The original No*49 started in 1940 or 41 The 49A is simply wider and some have a white spool. You can get a 49A out of a trash can in South Africa. I have a friend who travels there.
Hi Steve - Thanks for watching! I do my best. It's funny you mention the 49A. I had one of those for a short period of time. It didn't have the 49A badge on the side just 49 but it did have the wider spool. Also a 149 with the same setup. I did videos on those two as well. They are on my you tube channel. If you search google for Penn 49A or Penn 149A it should come up. Ended up selling them a while back. Take it easy and looking forward to your next video! - Tony
Man, if you find the 112h with the outside drag access- you can swap the thick asbestos drag washers for the carbon fiber and add two metal ( I swap all the brass for stainless) and you can get a 5+5 drag stack! Great video sir!
Yeah, I've got a 113h with the outside drag port. Super cool to have after spending an hour or two fighting some big ones! Just pull the handle off and do a quick swap and your back in business. Thanks for watching Steve! Looking forward to your next video! - Tony
Hi Tony! Have you ever done a video on your workspace? I enjoy cleaning my own reels and I’d like to set aside my own space in my house to work on them (besides the dinner table). What minimums would you recommend for a workspace, or what would your ideal workspace look like if that’s not what you already have?
Those are good questions. My main workspace only consists of a 5 ft. workbench with hand tools and lube and cleaning products within hands reach. I don't think you need a big space to work necessarily but you do need a clean space to work where you can lay out all the parts and have easy access to the things you need to work on the reels. Having ample lighting is also important I find. I might need to use that idea for a video soon! Thanks! Hope that's helpful and thanks for watching!
Hey Tony, some day we’ll have to get my bench and your bench together 😂😂 I wonder how many 33’s I destroyed before I learned how to put them back together. Great video! ❤❤
Right! That would make for alot of Penn reels for sure! And yes, I went througha few 33's before I learned a trick or two about how to work on them. Still love them though. Thanks for watching again! - Tony
There Is a guy selling those reels on Facebook RN if I not misreaded EDIT I misreaded he was just showing them
They are quite rare. Not many of them out there. Thanks for watching!
I still use these reels. The narrow spool Penn 49 you can Cast it near Empty not leaving much line to play your fish. Penn 49A takes nearly takes double the amount of line. I use 40lb monofilament on it. In the older days they used much heavier line. Beautiful reels 👍🤠
Thanks for the great information and glad you still enjoy using them!
I have actually had pieces rechromed on vintage reels. Not an inexpensive process and if they're badly pitted i wouldn't do it. If the pitting is light the chemical process of getting back down to pure brass will deal with most all of it. Have all the exterior pieces chrome plated on a vintage penn reel in my area is anywhere from $100-$150. You can also have pieces nickel plated for a lot less and the nickel plating holds up quite well.
That is good information, thanks for sharing!
Hi Tony! I was looking for a BG20 video and found this one. I started collecting the Daiwa BG reels about three months ago. My BG20 came in today and it is a beauty. I have six of the BG reels now - BG90 (with wobble), BG60, BG30, BG20, and two BG10 reels. The handle knob is rosewood and I’m pretty sure it is illegal to use that wood any longer because the tree is endangered. You’re right though, they are gorgeous handles. I hall all the Daiwa silver series reels (two sets), the GS series, and now these BG reels. The BG are by far the best of all these though I love them all. The BG reels all have three bearings while earlier ones do not. The exception are the Daiwa 8600 and 8700 which are worm gear reels that have three bearings. These 8000/ series Daiwas predated all these other series. I enjoyed your video! Don’t you like the BG anti-reverse system. - Chris
Hi Chris. I agree the the old school Daiwa BG series is great. I love my BG-20. It's a great tool to have in the kit. I also agree the silver series and Gold series are equally as great to have around. Glad you enjoyed the video and thanks again for watching! - Tony
I neld you take apart a mitchell 303 cleaning reel and then reassemble them very meticulously with every detail and post it on you tube for everyone to learn more for me that's amazing thank you so much
Thanks for watching!
Yo, thank you I found my grandpa’s old rod and it had this reel. My dad left and the reel didn’t work. I appreciate you for sharing your wisdom with me.
Glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for watching!
Have you considered an ultra sonic cleaner? Would have been great for a reel like this.
Yes indeed. Unfortunately I have not invested in one yet but I have heard good things. However I'm not 100 percent confident that in the situation of this reel that all the dirt and sand would have been removed well without some extra scrubbing. Thanks for watching!
I Enjoy watching your videos. Thanks for the interesting content.
I'm glad you like them! Thanks for watching!
Glad you're back!
Thank you and thanks for watching!
Where is the serial number on it?
No serial numbers on the old vintage penns.
Thank you.
Thanks for watching!
Hey Tony, this video was very helpful. Although, when I finished my reel the free spool seemed very stiff compared to yours. Any thoughts on why this might be? Thank you! Yours - 25:16
I would try loosening the non handle side bearing screw slightly. Thanks for watching!
I used to use oil on the gear spindle, but I switched to grease for better corrosion protection and because grease wont run off as easily or it wont migrate down. This video helped me get my reel back together and I learned that the 330 GT2 is basically the same except for the dog spring
Glad the video helped and thanks for watching!
What size is the ball bearing?
Sorry I don't recall off the top of my head and the reel is reassembled now. It is fairly small though. Thanks for watching!
I was planning on just changing my drag washers then I messed everything up so I decided to service the whole thing. This video really helped.
Glad the video helped. Thanks for watching!
This video was EXACTLY what I was looking for! Well done and thank you!
Glad it helped. Thanks for watching!
I notice this one has the optional cork arbor! Exceptional tutorial!!
Thanks for watching!
I am amazed at the quality of the working parts of these reels. Brass gear---machined pinion gear and more. Everything in these is top shelf!!
They sure do build them to last! Thanks for watching!
Thanks so much. A how to doesn’t get much better than this!
Glad the video was helpful. Thanks for watching!
Does it wobble?
There can be a slight wobble with these larger models but with this one Id say it's minimal. Thanks for watching!
If the posts are too corroded sand them down and cover them with black shrink wrap tubing !
Never tried that before but it's an interesting idea. Thanks for watching!
I thought I was the only person who's done that. Never seen it online but I've mentioned it in comments and people think it's nuts. I started it when I bought a 6/0 Senator as a backup to the backup reel off eBay for trolling offshore. I took black electrical shrink tubing and covered the posts. Just used my grinder with a wire brush attachment to remove any loose corrosion, little brake cleaner to totally clean it and used the smallest diameter shrink tubing I could get around the post. That reel gets blasted with salt spray on my boat constantly and the shrink tubing is going on 3 seasons now. I used tubing with an adhesive property to it and it's worked incredibly well.
@@JeffreySmith-m3y I do it to all my reels i re-sell on ebay now !
Any good places to get parts? I just realize I’m missing the shim that goes under the spool
For older Mitchells I would say ebay is the best bet these days. Hope that helps and good luck!
Are you able to service my Penn Peer 309?
I'm not currently taking in reels at this time but if you contact Dennis with 2nd chance tackle I'm sure he can help you out. Thanks for watching and good luck!
These are one of the best cheap reels ever made. Simple design.....Little to break....Just keep lubed....I have picked up many at flea markets for $5.....Slow retrieve gear ratio, so better for bait fishing. I still have my rusty one from when I was a kid...and used in salt water. Caught some 5 lb Sea Robbins and a Sand shark....along with probably 2000 Snapper Blues....Still works with rusty bail.
I agree. These are good to have in the tackle box. Thanks for watching!
my shaft doesn’t isolate on mine I think there’s supposed to be a peg that controls the shaft motion when that gear spins and mine sheared off and my shaft does not isolate when I reel it in
Broken parts are common with these older reels. Unfortunately parts are hard to come by. If you can find another reel on ebay and use it as a parts reels that could possibly be a solution. Thanks for watching!
Great Video, Thanks !
Thanks for watching!
Your teardown and reassembly video helped me get some stuck line from under the reel and helped me fix the drag. Thank you. You've got my sub
Glad to help and thanks for watching!
Are the monofils on the 155s the same or similar reels?
That's a good question. All of the Beachmaster line including the 155 were first manufactured before 1941 which was considered to be a time when dacron braided line was commonly used for a conventional reel. In the late 50's DupPont introduced Stren monofiliment line which in turn proved to be very popular and is still a standard monofilament today. Penn began to manufacturer the Monofil series reels 25,26 and 27 with the introduction of monofilament line to the market around that same time. Many of the parts are interchangeable. Using the Monofil 25 and the Beachmaster 155 for example. They are both mainly the same reel however the beachmaster side plates are black and the monofil 25 can be found with either dark maroon side plates or very rare grey side plates. I do believe both series use all the same internal parts. It's just the frame posts, spools and reel seat widths that differ. Hope that helps and thanks for watching!
Outstanding tutorial! It was a real life saver. Thank you!
Glad it helped and thanks for watching!
Lucas Reel Oil (blue bottle) best stuff on the market and Made in USA. Haven’t found anything better. And Lucas Oil is proven.
Yes I agree the Lucas Oil is a good product. I really like the bottle that it comes in as well. Thanks for watching!
My favorite reel when I was younger
It's a nice piece indeed! Thanks for watching!
I actually still have mine
Are there any other models that the Jigmaster 500 4:1 gears might fit? Thinking a 4:1 no.209 might be nice.
Yes. The same gear set will fit the Penn 112H, 112H2, 210M, 309M, 500S, 501 and Pro Gear Pacifica 2500. And the good thing about the Jigmaster is it's still in production so parts are pretty easy to come by. Hope that helps and thanks for watching!
@@backonthebenchreels Yes, helped! I am getting ideas for a mag braked high speed 309 reel for surf casting!
Awesome video I just bought one off craigslist for 30 bucks never been used I'm gonna try to clean it up 😮
Thanks for watching and good luck!
Tony, I agree a lost cause! Tad
Thanks Tad! - Tony
Good to be back to your site Tony! Been busy with work and school the last two months - and now all caught up and back to the fun stuff! Tad
Thanks Tad! - Tony
This video legit saved my life trying to swap my dad’s old reel from right-hand reel to left-hand reel. Just seeing it taken apart and put back together. Only after I had it all taken apart did I realize all I was missing was the tiny plastic piece that sets the handle screw. It had gotten stuck and wouldn’t come out of the main gear so I thought it was unswappable until I got into the guts of it. I’m picking up the hobby after he passed away when I was a teenager so being able to use his favorite reel is very important to me. Can’t thank you enough. -Alex
Glad the video helped and thanks for watching! - Tony
Been really busy at work the last two months and have been on the absent list. Looking forward to the Quick 110 - a little tricky getting the rotor off. Tad
Same for myself Tad. Very busy. And yes the rotor on the 110 can be tricky if you don't know what to look for. Stay well! - Tony
