    We had a place in Vancouver, BC called Satellite Electronics where you could buy surplus aircraft and ship WWII radios. I remember in the 70's buying a AN/ARN-7 with a friend who also bought one. We even got the glass covered Antennas and the control heads. We were kids then just learning about radios (and weird aircraft power supplies!). My radio was missing a complete circuit but somebody had been kind enough to include all the parts I would need to rebuild it inside in a carboard box. My friend and I split the cost of a manual and this was my first soldering experience. The funniest part was that my radio worked afterwards but his never did. I never laughed so hard, but almost got beat ul for it!😂

    I moved to Orlando in 1973 and started going to their original store which was just west of downtown Orlando off I-4 in 1974. Then they moved to the Fairbanks location just west of Winter Park off I-4. The staff was always helpful. You just explained what you were trying to accomplish and they would come up with what you needed or even a better way of doing something. I've solved many a project dilemma with parts from Skycraft over the last 50 years. Wow, how time flies when you're having fun. The new store off Edgewater Dr. is still my go-to when I need some odd-ball thing-a-ma-jig part.

    Pro tip: Drop the wife and kids off at Disney, then spend the day at Skycraft. I live 45 minutes North of there and used to spend a lot of time there in the early to mid-2000s. More often than not, there would be these three Japanese gentlemen huddled together, actively bouncing ideas off each other (I assume, as I don't understand Japanese). I believe they were inventors. They each had baskets full of stuff, nice guys with limited English speaking. The story I heard about the place was that it was started by a couple of guys who bought large surplus items at auction from NASA and would strip and test the components to sell. They used to have a lot of space stuff on display, including an astronaut's space suit. Great place to visit! Thanks for the video, I am planning a visit, I haven't seen the new store.

      I found out they moved when I rode my bike there,and there was a sign on the door telling where they moved to. Unfortunately, the route to the new store isn't one I would ride my bike through. it's on Edgewater Drive,north of Lee Road,in the rightmost corner of a plaza. Hard to see from the road. they also lost many of the original employees.

    I had an idea years ago that I shared with their manager. It was for a truly virtual store. I envision a camera, or several of them, operated like a drone where a customer on-line could roam the aisles of the store and even zoom in close to examine an item, price or sign. Don't laugh. Some very practical version of this idea will some day exist. It would also be great for trade shows. Add two way audio after beeping a salesperson and there you have it!

  • @offgrid2010
    @offgrid2010 9 днів тому

    Yes. About the time my car broke down they moved from their years old Fairbanks location to within walking distance for me! Countless times I have had something in the back of my mind, I visit the store, and there it is, the perfect item for my idea. Or one that just might work if I give it a try. Their work ethic is as high as it gets and as a result they are always coming up with new or used gadgets, accessories and even surplus food. There truly is something for everybody because they travel the country finding stuff.

    Just a guess but, Digikey 23-0766500068-ND or 23-0766500055-ND for the 9 circuit, and maybe 23-0766500063-ND or 23-0766500060-ND for the 2 circuit. BTW the last time I powered it up, about 15 yrs ago, my Xerox 820 worked ok, but the keyboard escape key contacts are fubar. The editor really used that key alot (however there was a ctrl key workaround). I could open it up if you can not find the wire colors and voltages documented anywhere.

    Fantastic & informative video! Thanks a million. I don't have any of the old gear any more, but have a few virtual machine programs on my Win11 box nowadays (VMware and 86Box). As I did run a bit of CPM stuff and early MS-DOS back in the '80s and '90s, I'd like to be able to 'build' a couple of virtual CP/M machines in one of those emulators, so some of the techniques you used have put some ideas into my head to try out. But, you also mentioned about using emulators for CP/M in the video. Did you get any further with that idea? What I'd love to be able to do is install CP/M on an IBM-type VM with a couple of virtual floppies and a virtual HDD (I understand that can be no more than 8MBytes). I did manage to get one working, but when I tried to create virtual floppy disk images and/or transfer the .com/binaries of programs like NewWord/WordStar and dBase over, I failed miserably. A video showing how to do that would be a god-send and will probably attract others who are into retro-computing but like me don't have the old kit!
