Biking North Mills Pisgah National Forest Upper Spencer Gap and Fletcher Creek
I head out to do a pretty sweet ride at Spencer Gap and Fletcher Creek. This is considered one of the flowier areas of the Pisgah National Forest.

Biking one of the smoothest trails I've been on in a long time. This is a great mountain bike trail for any skill level, it's butter for days. Check out the waterfall hikes when you are nearby.
Caribbean Trail.... yup, it's underwater. Buck Island, St. Croix, US Virgin Islands.

Buck Island Reef National Monument Snorkeling Trail. Yes, there's a snorkeling trail! So I think it counts for this channel. Short video of some sights on Buck Island, a great, quick, well-worth it, amazing little destination just off of St. Croix. Beautiful place and a great day trip. Really special place.

Shuttling the classic SoCal MTB San Juan Trail in Orange County. We had glorious springtime conditions for a perfect mountain bike day. And yes, there's some exposure on this one, so keep your eyes on the trail! Stay on the trail and you'll get about 12 miles of mostly downhill, with somewhere around 3000' down and 700' of climbing. Love the channel. I ride San Angelo SP.
It's fun stuff, nice to have some trail in the area. I got to hit it again I think it was in February or so. And thanks re the channel! More to come too, edits a little backed up, but getting there...
Great video. Where is the access to the Spencer Gap trail that you parked at? Thanks
Hey thanks - I think my chest harness has loosened up a bit over time, so it was a little bumpy - but not too bad. I actually parked at the bottom of the black section of trace ridge. It's where henderson reservoir road meets fletcher creek road. But... I think it's better probably to park where Wash Creek Road meets Henderson Reservoir road. There's a river there that you can chill at when you are done, and it will give you a little bit of downhill gravel road to cool down after the final climb.

Thanks, super fun trail. Think I'll have another shot at it this next month too.

NICE😍😍😍😍😍😍
This was absolutely amazing! Well done sir!
Thank you, Sir!
I used to ride this frequently when I lived in Cali back in the mid to late 00's, so good, I really miss these trails.
Yeah, it's such a fun ride, so buttery. I'm headed out to NC so will see what trails are on offer there and I'll probably start posting more videos. I hear the Pisgah is amazing.
Same here. Maybe around 2003 if I recall. I was still in high school and would shuttle up with my friend from school. I was young and rode my downhill bike everywhere since that’s all I had 😂 I wish I could be in that much shape again
Wow! Love this video! Well done- I’m heading here next and I can’t wait!!! Just don’t want unexpected rain 😂
Hey thanks! Was a great trip and fun video to make. Enjoy your trip and stay dry!
@@jimbuche8505 just returned and it did not disappoint!!!!
@@Mike_Blanda Awesome. It's definitely one of, if not my favorite, eastern sierra locations. Kind of has it all in one package. So great.
@@jimbuche8505 no doubt about it! I’m thinking of Cottonwood lakes in August. I didn’t bring recording equipment and want to do that. Probably next trip for me
@@Mike_Blanda Cottonwood Lakes is a big thumbs up as well, you may have been, but either way, it's great. I've had 2 trips there and also started a northbound JMT there. For me the highlight of those trips is Soldier Lake a bit further in and over New Army if you have time. (I have not done old army). I read that Sky Blue Lake is pretty awesome too but I've not managed to make it that far in that direction or Langley either - so more trips for the future! Enjoy.
Where are you guys parked to take this trail?
Morris Ranch Road - there's a little parking lot there that's really nice right on the east side of sunrise highway. Star Party Trailhead. From there we head down the highway a little bit on the road and cut onto wooded hill. There's a short connector trail. Cuts out the techy climb up wooded hill from aqua dulce trailhead/parking area that I suppose is off limits to bikes anyway.
@@jimbuche8505 Thank you
What month was this taken?? Beautifullllll
I think that was either august or early September. Conditions were nice. A bit of rain kept it interesting but not too much.
@@jimbuche8505awesome. I visited big pine a year ago exactly. Memorial Day weekend. But only stayed at lake 2. The water level were low. Hopefully I’ll get to check it out again in sept and make it to all of the lakes.
@@ExploreLiveCreateShare we didn't make it to 6 or 7, but maybe next time. wonderful place.
Wow
im new to the area, would you see this is a good place to get a three or more trail loop in ?
Yeah, you can definitely string together three or four trails in the area. There are lots. Sometimes you have to get a little bit creative to string together the best ones but there are a few really fun trails in Penasquitos Canyon and Delmar Mesa. You can put together some solid rides.
any place that rents ibis bikes in the encinitas or escondido areas? Going there for a family vacation Daley Ranch looks like a fun afternoon ride.
Heyy Justin - not sure about ibis in particular. We only have one ibis dealer and that’s in central SD. You might try bike bling in Escondido- I don’t believe they rent but they probably know someone who does. Also, Daley’s definitely fun in several parts, do know that was a shuttle ride tho. There are quite a few fun areas to ride locally, I like black mountain area a lot too. Black widow and miners trail. It’s interesting stringing things together sometimes here but you can make loops. If you are taking a full day or have time…. Greer Ranch a ways north is a real treat. Hopefully things will be dried out a bit when you get here.
Exactly what I was looking for, thanks for the video!!
For me the best place to ride in california👏👏👏
Uauu you are moving pretty fast in san juan👏👏👏😀
Did you drive to the top ? How did you get there? Me and my dad biked hiked up most of the way
Yeah, we totally shuttled it. I know a lot of people like to ride it at least up to cocktail rock, but we did the 2 car shuttle route. Love some shuttles...
@@thetrailfix But me and my dad did not make it to cocktail rock. How do you drive to the top from the trail head? Do you just keep going?
@@frankramirez4818 There's road that goes to the top, don't recall what the highway is, but the trail is really easy to access from the top. Parking spots and all. There's even a campsite a little past the trailhead. I think it's called Bluebird or Bluejay campsite.
I edit my movies in Vegas 19 and I'm very frustrated that Vegas doesn't allow me to stretch videos from 4:3 to 16:9 so nicely. You can only crop, or stretch with full frame distortion. It looks like my destiny is to shoot at 16:9 and lose some of the vertical view :(
I used to shoot 16:9, 2.7k, max lense mod and max hypersmooth, I now shoot 4:3, 2.7k, max lense mod and max hyper smooth……….i like the way it gets more of the bike towards the person plus you get away with if you dont quite set it up perfect on chest mount. I now upload to youtube in 4:3, get the same wide angle but with the bonus of more foward and back.
I like how your footage looks in 4:3, good top to bottom, especially on the computer screen without too much black bars. Since I'm kind of filming for big screen watching usually, or sideways phone, I still want to stick with that 16:9 for mine. But the 4:3 looks great. Your settings are same as mine it sounds like. I really like that with 4:3, the chest mount doesn't have to be perfect. One thing I've been playing with though because I do have the mount location pretty dialed (paint pens do wonders to mark the right angle) is keeping it in 4:3 in case I want to use just hypersmooth, but then running it through the very lowest setting of reelsteady. You can't move the Y axis in Reelsteady, but since it's pretty dialed in, I've had good luck since it auto centers it in 16:9. In the right sequence the Reelsteady looks really good, and if not, I can just use the 4:3 with hyper smooth and crop as needed. I have wayyy too much video I need to upload....
@@jimbuche8505 the max lense mod is a game changer and the stablization from it i find good and no need for real steady. As you shoot 16:9 the 4:3 would allow you to get a crop that suits. I try shoot high birthrate and 60fps as i do take screen shots. I aslo mark the gopro on the mount with red paint which is great…… pity they couldnt mark mounts with degrees or similar to save paint marking
@@Anto_Levo_Mtb I agree, max lens total game changer, I love it- hope it can go over 2.7K one of these days. I agree, it does mostly cancel the utility of Reelsteady also, but when I shoot 4:3 in hypersmooth, I have all the options now - either 4:3, crop to 16:9, or throw it into reelsteady (it works in conjunction with hypersmooth now, unlike before) and have Reelsteady turn it into 16:9. What I'm seeing is the Reelsteady 16:9 doesn't just crop though - it squishes things in, kind of like the elastic thing that I reviewed in this video, but it does it better, sort of like a superview. Also, even on the 1/100 (the lowest) smoothing setting, it does take out some of the minor jolts that hypersmooth still picks up (much higher smoothing crops too much and looks weird though). Because it's not just cropping, it also has the effect that the peripheral/outer edges blur out a bit -- so it gets the feeling of speed kind of like using an ND filter in a way. I processed a couple different ones the other day that I could do a video comparison with, but it was a little bit low light, so I kind of wanted to go back and film with better lighting. Maybe I'll just put it together anyway. In this particular kind of trail, with low overhanging trees and tight downhill ("Tunnels #4" in San Diego) I think the Reelsteady version actually looks quite a bit better. But it doesn't always. I did a video on the San Juan Trail a couple of months ago and in some sections I don't like it so much. I'm playing around with the fps, usually I do 24, but especially with that Reelsteady blurring on the edges I'm going to try out the 60.
That sunset shot was unreal, found the place to camp it seems, great night photography as well
Thanks! Was pretty stoked on this, and we definitely found some primo camp spots.
Excellent cinematography especially around 1:35
Thanks! I had a good time making this one. It was pretty out there, kinda filmed itself, ha. Should be going on a trip in Arizona a month or so though, so I'm looking forward to making another.
2:20 🤣 the best reaction I’ve heard for that drop. Cameras don’t do justice for these features
Ha, yeah, truly. Some really cool but hairy stuff out there.
You need to go on the high side of Waimea as there are a couple jumps where you can send it
Roger that, and have definitely hit that line. Fun stuff there. Was kinda on the follow my good buddy program on this one.
The stretched 1 looks great, how do you do that?
Hey, sorry it took me a bit to get back, but check this tutorial on it, it's really easy to follow, requires final cut pro of course: ua-cam.com/video/my6YI-Tk-u0/v-deo.html
How long do these trails go?
Not super long, there's a little bit more in tunnel 1, but that one that you see in this video, 4, is the best of the bunch as it's all downhill and fast. There are a lot of really fun other trails around there though, so it's always worth the ride. Lots to explore in PQ. May do another tunnel 4 video... have the video much better now vs this older one.
@@thetrailfix Thanks for the quick reply!
Woow.. very nice
What are your thoughts on just outputting in 4:3 ratio? From my understanding it is including the most amount of unaltered data? Just got a GoPro H10 for my motorcycle helmet cam. My first step into video creation and editing and currently learning the best settings to use. Thank you for the comparison, was helpful to see.
Hey Devin - I think just outputting in 4:3 does retain the most info, but it would probably bug me because of the black bars. I want to use as much of the screen real estate as I can. I'm editing a video right now from a ride I filmed over the weekend in 4:3 and it's coming out really nicely to 16:9, and I've definitely used the flexibility and top to bottom breadth for an edit or two in it. The only drawback I'm really seeing in 4:3 is the extra time to frame it in post, but depending on the editing program you're using that likely isn't too much hassle. I use Final Cut Pro which is just copying and pasting attributes, but I don't know much about other software like davinci etc.. Can't imaging it would be too different, but if you're using something like iMovie, I'd be sure that you can reframe from 4:3 if you want to output to anything different. Not sure how robust its features are. In that case, you might be limited to what you shot in, be sure check that out.
Hey Devin - check out @anto levo ua-cam.com/channels/WjdA76XbQwO-FTEbx4CxbQ.html in the string above. He's shooting and outputting in 4:3 on his channel and it looks solid.
Is this trail in Southern California by any chance?
Yessir, it is
Great video! You rode a large part of my main loop, i enjoyed seeing the different lines people take. I’ll try them out the next time i get out there. FYI i always pedal strike at the exact same spot you did
Ha, yeah, that pedal strike spot.... I do love that ride. Good stuff.

you have location reference for "No Clew"? Trying to ride that this Sunday as well?
I think it may be called clewless. not sure, i've heard both. it's near the lookout, should be on segments in strava and i think it shows on trailforks as a hiking trail.
Nice video bro. I've ridden PQ many time over, but for some reason, never rode the area starting 5:51. What trail is that? Do you have a strava for this? I've ridden crabs, so I know that end trail, just not that other section.
I don’t have the Strava linked, and as you can see from other comment I didn’t really want to give away the crabs location (you’ve been there tho) but what you’re asking about it’s just a connector trail at the top of little Waimea. It goes up into Carmel mountain preserve from little waimea. It should be on all the Strava and Trailforks, real easy to find on the map. A few fun ones up there if you explore a bit. Enjoy!
@@thetrailfix Thx brother. Me any my Vets are riding PQ and crabs again Sunday, so this would be a nice addition to the normal PQ ride.
Really good vid!

Nicely done!
Thanks!
Where is this trail at? Can you share the location? Looks very fun
Hey there. It’s any chance that you can share the location of this trail. Looks really fun.
Well, that one's not on any of the maps, if you mean crabs, but you can find it with a bit of google satellite and some gumshoe work... don't really want to be the guy to give it out entirely, but I can say, look to the west! Took me a little bit to find, but was not too difficult, and all the sweeter for it :) The other portions like cobbles are on trailforks and the other apps. Happy riding!
@@thetrailfix that is exactly what I did, I've ridden mostly the east side at DB/proline/tunnels/switchbacks and across over at teds but never ventured over west. That place probably gets hero dirt quite a bit during the winter months due to it's location, especially pre 10am. If you ride it quite a bit, can I ask.. trail maintenance allowed or is it done by SDMBA? Keeping trails like this in good condition is something SD lacks, especially on reserves, on MTB focused trails. Keeping good fast, safe berms and jumps is key to longevity.
Hey sorry it took me a little bit to get back to you I didn't see this. But I'm not entirely sure who keeps this one up I don't ride it super frequently so I'm not exactly in the know on it. It's not marked officially as far as I know but it's a very very clear trail so I'm not sure who would be taking this one up.
That's so awesome mate!! noice :)
Thanks man!
@@thetrailfix You're welcome :) cheers!
Can you help us locate the staging areas? Do you have any Strava or navigation links? Thanks for posting this!
hey there, sorry for late reply, i'm not the best always at checking the comments - gotta figure out some notification setting! Here's how I roll this ride: strava.app.link/L1iPiElNIlb I like to incorporate this into a noble canyon shuttle too. Like our own mini enchilada.
And there's actually lots of ways to approach this. If you want you can start at the sunset trailhead and follow the old road to the top of gatos. But you miss the wooded hill trail that way, which is a great section. Or you can start down in the meadows even at the laguna campground and make your way over to chico ravine climb then up the old road. Or you can even start at agua dulce trail head and bomb straight into gatos. or climb a little bit from there and go around to the wooded hill start. Lots of options.
