    Is it not better to quench tipside down first? Not a criticism just a question as I'm not sure. Thanks

    I hate it when someone says "This is a good welder for beginners". WTF does that even mean? Wouldn't you want a beginner to use one of the best welders you have so they know what a bad weld looks like vs a great weld? I have this welder and I am a "beginner" even though I have welded several projects. I can say this machine sucks for farm implements which is what it should be used for. I have not been able to get a good weld on 1/4" steel with it. The wire feed is just way too slow to produce a nice juicy weld on that material. I wish I would have seen this video befor I bought mine because there are way too many options out there. This welder got great reviews, but I have not seen a UA-cam video with a great weld using it like I have seen with other welders. I guess 'beginners" should just throw away $200-$300 on a cheezy welder and try to learn with a POS instead of saving up for a great tried and true welder like a Miller or Lincoln. Thanks for your video.

    Do you heat your oil before quenching? Could you explain please?

    • @PalmForge
      @PalmForge 2 місяці тому

      Parks 50 is effective from 50 degrees Fahrenheit to 120 degrees Fahrenheit. So no I didn’t need to heat it since the temperature was around 70 degrees. I use an infrared thermometer to test the temperature.

    Crotch is a bad ideal for height, it should be lower, as much heavier items need to be put there, and tall isn’t better. Especially if something heavy is going to fall off that anvil… and a sand floor becomes obviously better. If the floor is soft a low height is best. Sit,stand or kneeling. I found kneeling easier. Saving a pile of lifting.

    I’m a new father and recently unemployed due to our sitter flaking out on my wife and I. Looking to make my hobby into a business, however due to living in the city I cannot obtain a business permit using a coal forge due to the fumes and “nuisance regulations”. I’ve been looking into this forge and found your video very informative. Thanks.

      @@PalmForge appreciate the response, how often do you have to refill your propane tanks? One concern I had was the cost of propane versus coal.

    • @PalmForge
      @PalmForge 3 місяці тому

      I usually run it between 5-10psi. At that flow rate I can get 8hrs with a single barbecue size tank. The secret to saving money on gas is to go to a propane supplier instead of those tank trade in locations you find at gas stations. I can get tanks filled for $15 here in Md usually. In the summer they run specials and I can get it for $10.

    • @PalmForge
      @PalmForge 3 місяці тому

      In my area you can get a 50lb bag of blacksmith coal for $15 a bag. Once you learn how to run a coal forge you can get 8hrs on a bag pretty easy. So I would say cost is pretty similar. Gas is so much more convent but coal makes you feel like a real smith and there is something peaceful about the flame.

      @@PalmForge we have four suppliers here where I’m at, (used to fill propane at a previous employer) I was thinking of picking up two 40 pound tanks or three 20 pound tanks depending on what’s available and affordable. Either way should get me a weekends worth of forging. I appreciate all the information.

    I set mine by a hammer in my hand, hold it parallel to the ground with elbo bent at waste, and measure to the face of the hammer. Then subtract an inch. That way my hammer blows are not angled unless i want them to be.
