Promoting environmental stewardship and enhancing human health and safety through integrated pest management.
New Pesticide Mitigations, Labels, and Bulletins (Oh My!)--Paluch
You may have heard that there are some big changes happening at the federal level related to pesticide applications. These changes are being made to better protect species listed as endangered or threatened under the Endangered Species Act (ESA), and some of the rules are already in effect. What does this mean for landowners and pesticide applicators? Find out with Dr. Gretchen Paluch, Pesticide Bureau Chief at Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship.
Dr. Paluch shares the US Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) goals and progress related to protecting ESA-listed species, including the EPA’s workplan, Herbicide Strategy, and Vulnerable Species Plan. The EPA is also working on additional strategies for insecticides and rodenticides. All of these documents have come about very quickly, and it’s helpful to understand how they relate to and support the new rules related to pesticide applications.
In addition, Dr. Paluch talks about changes that landowners can make so that pesticides can continue being used to manage pests. She shares about the Mitigation Menu that is available from the EPA, the importance of making use of the Bulletins Live! Two website, and how to keep up on continuing changes. Landowners are likely going to need support interpreting the new practices and mitigations. This webinar helps you prepare to answer their questions.
Dr. Paluch shared many helpful links during the talk. Below is a list of links where you can find more information related to this webinar:

Переглядів 2463 місяці тому
Phomopsis stem canker, a disease that affects sunflowers is causing significant yield losses in US sunflower production, especially in Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota. Currently, farmers are advised to manage Phomopsis stem canker by using fungicides that contain Quinone outside Inhibitor (QoI). However, resistance to QoI has been confirmed in the causal fungus, Diaporthe helianthi in ...
Using Social Network Analysis to Understand Pest Management Used by Vegetable Growers-Long & Moreno
Переглядів 1724 місяці тому
Managing specialty crop insect pests can be challenging, especially when they are only problematic in regionally-isolated cropping systems. Are challenges in management due to a lack of knowledge about pest biology, limited use of integrated pest management (IPM) strategies, or poor communication between farmers and researchers? In this presentation, Drs. Long and Moreno investigate these quest...

Wow! I have several types of tick illnesses including a live Babesia! Why don’t they do this in all parks and where I know I was bitten, which was a children’s garden!!!
Unfortunately, not a lot of funding goes into tick (or mosquito) surveillance in many areas. As a society, we have a bad habit of only paying attention to something *after* it becomes a massive public health problem lol. There are people working on changing this, but it takes community outreach and potentially dealing with politicians that not a lot of scientists want to do haha. Citizen science has been a cool way to help surveillance efforts. :)
Loved hearing about this research!
Elderberries! Loved hearing about the health-benefitting attributes of the berries. Thanks
Thanks for the video, but I worry about the lack of safety equipment modelled here! Lyme is a serious illness and PPE should cover the entire body.
Yup. Or if not cover the whole body at the very least swat them away immediately. The shot of a tick crawling up the back of the palm gave me the shakes.
You're overreacting. It's takes a lot of time for ticks to bite you.
Yes any time people walk in the woods where there's ticks, they should be wearing full safety equipment. I myself only travel outdoors in a large plastic bubble for my safety. If you want to be extra safe, you can spray chemicals all over your body. As long as the CDC says the chemical is safe, your good. I'd say most people agree the CDC is a trustworthy and accurate source of information. Stay safe
@@laius6047 The problem is that they find a hiding spot and go undetected.
Yay TEAMWORK!
Do you know if there are any ‘citizen science’ efforts for tick surveillance and monitoring in the Midwest? If so, whom should I contact to learn more about contributing?
Hi, Leah, the Midwest Center for Excellence Vector-Borne Disease has a nice collection of Midwest info, including "The Tick App." Emailing you with contact info, but I think I found it on this website: mcevbd.wisc.edu/ticks
