Great video and fantastic photos. We are looking to book this trip, can you tell me what camera gear you're using? It looks like full frame, and long lens, just trying to work out what's best. Thanks in advance.

@@TheBlackwidow1962 this was a Nikon D500 with a 150 - 500 mm lens but being a APS-C sensor it extends it more like a 650mm but several of the encounters the lens was to long! Most photographic groups go in April so recommended as a time of year. Was a fantastic experience plus you have the supporting cast of wildlife as you will of seen. As ever, you need to be lucky although some of the guides are very good at second guessing.

Thanks for both pieces of info. I’ve subscribed to your channel now so will watch out for it. I’ve got a D500 and 200-500 lens. So looking forward to doing this trip. We’re looking at April 2026. Looking at your video clips the jeeps don’t look too overcrowded? We were generally lucky in Africa but a couple had quite a few people in which isn’t the best. Just watched your video again, it’s excellent 👍🏻

I was at Bruggen at the time, my mate left Wildenrath the year before. by 1993 we were both civilians. but I returned a few years later to visit my old next door neighbour who had demobbed and stayed out in Germany and had bought an ex married quarter at Wildenrath. It seemed strange driving around the area, I have never met anybody who does not miss RAFG or serving in Germany, I think for most it was the best years of their service.

Great video. I was there right at the end. Saw the end of the 'tomb' at Leuchars (EES), (posted to Wildenrath as they were being replaced), Wildenrath (ASF) and Wattisham (56 Sqn). Wildenrath was my favourite tour, with Bruggen a close 2nd! Used to walk around the camp as it emptied, it was earie and quiet. Your video really shows that.

I have been to the USAFM moe times than I can count. 2 Things if you are going. 1) you will notice that the walls are ALL painted BLACK. That sucks up light, like you cannot imagine. That means that the flash on your camera is going to eat batteried like crazy, BRING spare batteries. 2) Do whatever you can to go to the restoration hanger, it is WORTH it. The resto hanger is actually ON the USAF base, you cannot get there except with the tour, on a bus. You will sign up in the morning, they will tell you where to meet, load you on to the bus, take you oout, and then bring you back.

I will not shut this base down.. sounds like what he said about Monika. he was right, it had nothing to do with it, and it was an honest but at the same time, Deceiving statement. shutting down of five rounds to save $12 Billion annually. thats a drop in the bucket in current times.

So very rarely on UA-cam do I get to say "I was there." And I was, on that day . . and I was proud as the VC-10 rolled in. I didn't video anything back then but I did take photos. I really must upload a slideshow of that day sometime. The sidewinder stencil always interested me, a Jaguar in air-to-air combat? I did question a pilot once, and got a pretty logical response . . but the fog of years leave me guessing again. I can't help thinking it was a ground attack mission, the explanation being something like, " . . that's all I had left, so I banked and fired it!" Something for me to research perhaps.

92 Sqn had been at Wildenrath briefly some years before it was stationed there with its Phantoms. In 1970 Gutersloh's runway was being resurfaced so temporary homes had to be found for 19 and 92 Sqns with their Lightnings - 92 came to Wildenrath. 4 Sqn Harriers had arrived not long before so there was a certain amount of friendly squadron rivalry.

I'm not an aircraft buff, but I loved the Phantoms on 19 & 92 Squadrons. The ground crew on both Squadrons were great.
