I didn't realise Montella was at Genoa! A great goal from him. Unfortunately for Vale they were outclassed here; Genoa had been in the UEFA Cup four years earlier and until this point had been more accustomed to being in Serie A most of the time, while Port Vale were as often in the third tier of English divisions as the second, and it showed in the result. Genoa were on the decline, but still with some good quality players like Nappi and Ruotolo (and Montella, it seems!), whereas Port Vale are a side that the common boy in England in the 80s and 90s would only know as a name from somewhere vaguely deep down in the lower divisions (I checked and they have never played in the top division in over a century of existence). Incidentally, since the rebranding of the English top division as the Premier League or Premiership, the system has been confusingly named, and became only more so in the 2000s when the second tier (Division One) was renamed the Championship, while the third tier was- ridiculously- named League One. It is unintuitive and seems to serve to make the different divisions feel as if they belong in separate hierarchies rather than all being in the same one.
