yo! i played bass in a math rock band from Chicago called The Para-medics from 2008 to 2012 during what I would argue was the revival of what WE knew as math-rock from the early 90s and 00s being heavily influenced by specifically west coast math rock bands like _Tera Melos_ and _Hella;_ edgier, weirder east coast math rock bands like _Ahleuchatistas,_ _Lightning Bolt,_ and _Polvo,_ as well as the more "grounded" and typically heavier east coast math rock of bands like _Don Caballero_ (HUGE influence on practically EVERY band listed here especially with their last album _"American Don"_ which is barely ever that heavy and sounds the closest to current math rock out of their whole catalogue), _Breadwinner;_ basically the entire D.C. record label Dischord's catalogue and the D.C. hardcore scene in general, and numerous earlier & generally lesser-known local acts out of Chicago like _Piglet,_ _Paper Mice,_ and _Them, Roaring Twenties._ I never even realized the MASSIVE advantage we had to proliferate local bands so easily in the midwest until i moved out to the west coast and like, NO ONE has basements here. it's so weird. the number of times we practically fucking died trying to carry our amps down rickety, dirty, and what would later be beer-soaked wooden stairs into a dank, musty basement knowing we'd have to carry them the fuck back upstairs to play a set inside a chamber of foggy, humid beer sweat...countless. i'll probably die due to all the like, pabst blue ribbon aroma combining with sweaty dude particles i've inhaled over the years lolol. but man, if you could fill that fucking basement you were the _shit._ especially when you could see people still peeking down the stairs, sometimes up to the door where they're like, around a fucking corner and can't even get down there to ACTUALLY see you, they wanted to hear it though...i've been on both sides of that fence. it was a fucking cool fucking time, man. ||| What I mostly see as "math rock" today is some blend of early (pre-Patagonian Rats) Tera Melos and later bands like CHON and as for the midwest emo aspect of it it's like, American Football of course and Algernon Cadwallader anyway. that's my lil rant hahahahaha. if you ever wanted to dive deep into this stuff with the aide of a certified math rock nerd and member of a certified heh, _purty darn important lil math rock band if i do say so m'damn self,_ i'm just sayin', y'all--hit me up! smooches brian
