The A-side from Claw Hammer's second 7", released by Sympathy for the Record Industry in 1989. Plus cool, so thanks, no offense intended, and all apologies necessary. Enjoy!

"Crude Sound", the debut single by mysterious Manchester, UK band The Powers That Be, released in 1992 by Amphetamine Reptile Records as part of their "Research and Development Series". Great/goofy caveman space rock with sneering vocals and a commendably honest track title.

    This album sounds strangely Rush-like for some reason, doesn't it? At least lyrically?

    Amazing and audibly piercing. It's obnoxious and lovely. Great '77 punk tune. Post punk already.

      Glad you dig, and yeah, it's a wild mix. The attack is pure punk, so of its moment, but they're already looking for new ways to apply it, pushing the form out. At the same time, the Beefheart lurch, McGuinn chime, surreal lyrics and prog structure recall the psychedelic era. Madness of the best kind.

      Yeah, I love it all, along with the Egyptians & Hitchcock in general. But the early Soft Boys stuff is unique. Thrilling, creepy and unpredictable, like they hadn't yet set any boundaries.

    I own the original LP, me and my brother purchased it in 1980, right after the single Video killed the radio star/Kid Dinamo (late 1979). It’s one of a kind, timeless. A milestone (at least in my life). 20 years later I discovered this and a few other alternative releases.

      This is my story too. My younger brother and me were such big fans of this band at the time and bought all the singles and the album (and then Adventures in Modern Recording). A seminal album with amazing production that inspires me still to this day. I recorded it on cassette and I used to be in bed at night with my little mono tape player listening to it at low volume with my ear next to the speaker. I long for them to do a proper release of the live concert Trevor Horn and Geoff Downs did a few years ago at the Supper Club (on this channel here ua-cam.com/video/AzfGMtnxb6A/v-deo.htmlsi=Rv5nypfDddp4rVMJ ) as the most recent Buggles outing supporting Seal was dreadful in my opinion.

    I've honestly always wondered if this is Yes performing the backing tracks... that bass certainly sounds like Chris Squire.

    • @joedoyle9053
      @joedoyle9053 4 роки тому

      It honestly could be, but Trevor Horn was also a great bass player, and both Horn and Downes later joined Yes, which Horn played fretless bass in. Horn also produced a few of Yes's later albums (Including 90125), so maybe that's why it sounds like it's Yes in the background.

      @@joedoyle9053 Yeah, right after I posted that I went and watched a bunch of Trevor Horne and the Producers clips. I had no idea he was that kind of player, or that he played fretless during Drama. All this time I had thought he was pretty much just a vocalist and producer. Super talented dude, for sure.
