When the weather makes it impractical to sketch outdoors, sometimes we have to find other ideas. 50mph winds put me off going to sketch outside at Southwold, so I chose to work from a photo instead.

thank you for sharing, lovely painting!
I love the way you don't care about the colours going 'over the lines'. Gave me inspiration to try again after having given up!
Thank you very much for watching, I’m so happy to hear it’s inspired you to pick it up again! Happy painting!
Love your art and your down to earth approach, my sort of teacher
Thank you so much for watching and commenting, I’m so happy you enjoyed it. I’m very much at the start of the learning curve but I enjoy sharing things I’ve picked up as I go along! Happy sketching!
i got a problem with drawing the windows of buildings the proportion is an issue 😊
Yes, me too sometimes. Personally I find looking at the negative space between the windows the biggest help here when I’m drawing them. Hope it might help you too!
Nice - proves that you can make a good urban sketch from a relatively plain building
Thank you, yes, I did my best with it! When I picked somewhere to do a quick sketch I had remembered the building as being a bit more interesting than it actually is. A different angle would’ve been better, but there was a big group of boys sitting where I’d have needed to be so I stayed incognito!
Love your drawings and information on ink pens.
Thank you very much 🙂 I’m going to do a video on all my fountain pens soon which might possibly be of interest.
I have been wanting to get a TWSBI for a couple of years now... I just paused and went and ordered 2 TWSBI eco's (different nibs) one clear and one black.
Brilliant! That’s made me want another one in a different colour now! I’d be really interested to hear how you get on with them, I love some of my other pens but the TWSBI’s still my favourite.
Nice skstch water calor😮😮😮
Thank you very much! 🙂
Such a wonderful sketch! Thanks for showing it down. The colours are lovely. Mx
My pleasure 😊 Thank you very much for watching x
I'd love to watch this slower! It's a great sketch. Mx
Thanks for watching another of my videos! Much appreciated. I can repost it slowed down if you like? It was recorded on time lapse so I can’t make it smooth like a normal video, but it’ll be 5 times slower. Let me know if you think there’s any value in that and if so I’ll post it over the weekend. I’m planning to record a few more of these as I do them throughout winter, in which case I’ll record them on both Timelapse and normal settings in future. x
@emmavjsketch that would be great! And I look forward to more! It's easier to follow along, and capture the nuances when it's slower. Thank you. Mx
Thank you! I’ve posted it up. It’s still a time lapse as that’s how I recorded it, but I’ve slowed it down! x
@emmavjsketch thank you! Mx
Is it at angle 55 like the fude mannen green one? I had a feeling it was a different angle, 45 or 65 which, i giess makes a difference... somewhere? No idea.
Thank you for watching. I’ve searched and searched and can’t find anywhere where it says definitively what the angle is, but comparing it by eye to my Sailors, it looks closer to the 40° than the 55°. Sorry I can’t be more precise, if I find out I’ll update here.
@emmavjsketch yes! I thought it was me, not finding the spec. But I'm sure it's different. Thanks Mx
Thanks for sharing!
Thank you very much for watching!
As mentioned below, it's a great set BUT it will bloat and expand when the water reservoir is left with water in it. I suspect it's simple evaporation expansion. In hindsight, I should have emptied it when not using it for prolonged periods of time. So... there it is; golden advice! Empty when not in use, particularly when left for prolonged periods. Another point is, it takes about a week (irony!) to drip the water into the attached wash container from the reservoir. It really does 'drip-drip-drip' out... but hey... nothing's perfect, right!? 😉👌
Thank you, I’ll empty mine when I’ve got a few days to spare! ;-) As I mention in the video, I find the plastic W&N one so much easier because you can squeeze it to get the water out. I might treat myself to the proper Whiskey Painter one some day… Anyway, thank you so much for watching and commenting and the helpful info!
I absolutely love this! I've fallen in love with urban sketching and watercolours. Thank you for showing your process and explaining what you're doing and using. Looking forward to more of your ink and watercolour sketches.
Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to comment. It’s quite a new channel, so hearing that people are enjoying some of the content is really encouraging and much appreciated.
Love this! So interesting to see how you create your sketches
Thank you very much! I’m so pleased enjoyed it
Very interesting, but where can I buy the green clips and what are they called please?
Hi, thank you for watching, I’m glad you found it interesting. I’m not quite sure which green ones you mean, but here are the different types I have. The food clips are the best in my opinion as they don’t dent the paper. The gold ones are nice and big and fit a lot of pages in (they’re great when I use my Stablo board) but I wish they had a hole in the bit you squeeze (technical term haha). Only a minor irritation - but I find it handy to clip my water pot etc. onto something in my rucksack but you can’t with these. The tiny bulldog clips (or binder clips) are ok but they are very small and can dent the paper a bit. amzn.eu/d/1e9qYlN amzn.eu/d/9Np40Zu amzn.eu/d/eVHFq90 amzn.eu/d/7EEvFo8 Are any of these the ones you meant? Sorry if I’ve misunderstood.
@@emmavjsketch thanks very much for the detailed reply, yes the first listed is exactly what I wanted. I just did not think of asking for bag clips, was fixated on art supplies. Thank you again, you’ve solved my problem.
You’re welcome, glad I understood correctly and have helped!
💚
Thank you for watching 👍🙂
Gratidão por essas orientações. Vou treinar bastante 🌷🥰🇧🇷
Thank you! I really hope you enjoy it, too! 😊
this would also make a great short, very informative!
Thank you very much for the suggestion (and for watching), I will try to reformat it as one in the next week or so.
Emma, permita-me fazer uma pergunta: Por que você não usa direto a caneta? Muito obrigada!🌷🇧🇷
Hi, sometimes I do, it depends on how confident I feel that day, and also the complexity of the subject. I may do some videos of going straight in with pen in the near future.
Os seus desenhos e pinturas são sensacionais…Se um dia eu desenhar e pintar a metade do que você faz, eu já estarei satisfeita…Muito obrigada pelas orientações!🌷🇧🇷
Thank you very much for watching and your lovely compliments. I hope the tips that have helped me will be helpful to you, too.
Obrigada pelas dicas!🌷🇧🇷
Thank you for watching!
Thank you so much for subscribing and taking the time to comment - it’s much appreciated. I do hope you find the tips helpful! Thank you, Emma
I love multi-taskers! I’ve seen other artists use the wristband for brushes but not to bundle the kit. Brilliant!
Thanks! I like to keep things neat and compact!
That was fun to watch. I have seen a lot of these type of videos. You’re the only one who has brought a blanket or some sort of something to sit on the ground with. It’s a really good idea. You have a nice fountain pen collection.
Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment, I’m so pleased you enjoyed it! I do have a small three legged stool and a lightweight camping chair that I also use depending on the suitability of the location, but that little blanket is so small and lightweight I just always have it in my bag, and it’s proved very useful many a time in the damp winter months!
Thanks For Sharing ❤
Thank you for watching and commenting ❤️
Also what size nib would you recommend for a lamy safari?
Thanks for watching and your comments. Personally I like the medium nib best, I find it nice and smooth, but the fine one is better if you want a more neat, accurate finish.
lol grey watercolour pencil if you’re in the UK 😅😅😅
Heehee it’s pretty accurate! 🤣
@ it made me proper belly laugh cos it’s so true lol 😂
🤣 I was muttering it to myself really but decided to leave it in, glad I did now and glad it made you laugh! 🤣
Excellent! Thank you for sharing. ✌🏻😊
Thank you very much for watching and commenting! Glad you enjoyed it! 😊
@ I’m happy I found your channel-looking forward to more of your posts!
Thank you! ❤️
check the end cap of your koh-i-noor clutch pencil: it should have a built in "pointer"! (my bigger one does anyway) Love your set up, happy painting!
Thank you! I checked but couldn’t find anything on mine. Perhaps I need to order the bigger one (any excuse to buy more art stuff ha ha!)! Thank you so much for watching and commenting, glad you like the set up, and happy painting to you! :)
Cannot find the Stablo nomadic easel for sale anywhere online - do you have link where you bought it from please? Thanks!
Hi, I had to order mine from their official website in France, as did a friend in the USA. I don’t think they have any distributors elsewhere that I’m aware of. The website is here: stablo.fr/ The EN version appears to be down when I checked just now, hopefully temporarily! Thank you for watching 👍
The website is working!
@@smchalk3535brilliant, thanks!
The pentel water brushes are surprisingly good. They're not as great as regular brushes but they hold up pretty well. They also seem to keep their quality for years without fraying.
Thank you, I think I will order some and give them a try then, I’ve heard others say good things about them too. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Nice kit, thanks for sharing.
Thanks very much for watching, and taking the time to comment. Much appreciated!
Thank you for sharing. Could you possibly make a list of supplies and where you bought them?
Thank you so much for watching. Yes, I’ll do this tomorrow evening.
Using a watercolor pencil for the initial sketch in is quite clever.
Thank you very much. It inevitably does leave behind the odd mark here and there that doesn’t get ‘washed away’, but I quite like that effect so I just leave it.
I need a little blanket like that
It’s really handy, I used it on Saturday when it was really damp to sit anywhere. They do a slightly bigger one too. Thanks for watching, let me know if you’d like the link for the little blanket.
Thanks!
Thank you!
Great! Haven’t found the Stablo Nomadic Easel here in the USA. Where did you find yours?
Hi, thanks for watching. I had to order mine directly from France; a friend in the USA said she had to do the same, so unfortunately I don’t think they have any resellers elsewhere. It was from stablo.fr/en/home
Great! Thanks.
Thank you for watching, hope you enjoyed!
Hi! I have had this box from schmincke for a long time and I have to say that even when I really loved it and used it a lot, it started to bend over time and got inflated and suddenly it wouldn’t close anymore, so I had to modify it by cutting the pieces of metal inside and leaving it all a flatter surface. It still works, but I can’t fill it with water anymore or it does bloat again. Thanks for the review and love your channel!
Hi! That’s very useful to know, thank you; I’ve only had it a couple of weeks and only used it a handful of times, so it’ll be interesting to see how it holds up over time then. I saw another review yesterday saying the quality wasn’t great, so we’ll see… maybe I’ll do an update when I’ve had it longer. Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to comment, I’m so pleased you like the channel, it’s very new so it’s really encouraging to hear, thank you!
Strange...I just saw another Utube about this box and the same thing was happening - it was swelling out forcing the pans up at an angle stopping the lid from closing. I hasnt happened mine yet but I rarely use the water reservoir. Probably gases in the water expanding. I must remember never to leave water sitting in there for prolonged periods of time.
Lovely! I had my first outdoor sketching session with Caithness Sketchers yesterday, by a river! Brilliant, but I'm checking out your videos for field set tips 😊
Thank you! And wow - the scenery up there looks amazing! What a fantastic place to go sketching! Thank you very much for watching and commenting - I’ve got a few more videos I’m working on about some of the tips I’ve picked up, hopefully they’ll be useful!
Depending on destination it might be worth taking an empty pen with you and buying ink on arrival if you are reasonably sure of being able to find some. I’d love to see a follow up about what you used on the trip. One of my favourite of activities is to take a relatively random selection of items with me and have to make do, but that isn’t for a holiday (I don’t go these days) just for short stroll’s when I might be sketching, so lower stakes.
Thank you, yes that is a good idea. Unfortunately on this occasion I was in a fairly remote village on a lesser known Greek island (or fortunately, whichever way you look at it 😉!), and there were barely any food shops nearby, never mind art supply shops! But otherwise that’s definitely something to consider, thank you. I am planning a follow up in a few weeks, I must say I did miss my usual pens but 'made do' with the Microns. I know a lot of people who love them so it’s just personal taste I guess. That’s also a great idea about the random items, thanks - I might try it myself. Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to comment.
I love your setup! I ahve a stablo too and I don't know what I would do without it.
Thank you, I try to keep it all to a minimum but I’m not good at knowing what to leave behind sometimes! The Stablos are so handy, aren’t they? Definitely worth the expense. Thank you for watching and commenting!
That's a nice neat little kit. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much for watching and commenting, much appreciated, and I hope you found it useful.
Someone asked where I got the pencil case, but the comment has disappeared 😬 But if anyone would like to know, here is the link amzn.eu/d/ceG8fWr
Lovely! 💛💚
Thank you very much :) 🧡
You make it so clear and easy! Thank you 🙏
Thank you for watching, I’m so pleased you enjoyed it!
That terry cloth wrist band idea is bloody brilliant! I am just starting my Urban Sketching journey and looking to pick up all the tips I can. Thank you!
It’s ingenious, isn’t it?! I can’t take the credit as I’ve seen a couple of other UA-camrs do it. Good luck with your urban sketching journey, and thank you for watching and commenting, I’m so glad you found it a useful tip!
Thanks Emma! This is so useful! I‘ve been thinking about putting together a travel kit that’s lightweight. Looking online just made it more overwhelming because so many gadgets are sold. I love that you keep it simple, minimalist and yet have everything you need.
Thank you so much for watching and for taking the time to comment. It’s really encouraging to hear this has been helpful!
Oh wow! Im new to watercolor and my job is going to require me to work over night next year and there's a lot of down time so I've been thinking of watercoloring during the slowest hours of my shift to pass the time. Midnight sypervisors are super chill. This was a great video. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to comment! I’m really happy you found it useful- would love to hear how you get on!
