What is after Neptune
The planets (rocky ones) Mercury is the first planet from the Sun and the smallest in the Solar System. In English, it is named after the ancient Roman god Mercurius (Mercury), god of commerce and communication, and the messenger of the gods. Mercury is classified as a terrestrial planet, with roughly the same surface gravity as Mars. The surface of Mercury is heavily cratered, as a result of countless impact events that have accumulated over billions of years. Its largest crater, Caloris Planitia, has a diameter of 1,550 km (960 mi) and one-third the diameter of the planet (4,880 km or 3,030 mi). Similarly to the Earth's Moon, Mercury's surface displays an expansive rupes system generated from thrust faults and bright ray systems formed by impact event remnants. Venus is the second closest planet to the Sun after Mercury . It orbits the Sun every 224.7 Earth days . [ 11 ] Venus has no natural satellites and is named after the Roman goddess of love and beauty . After the Moon , it is the brightest natural object in the night sky, with an apparent magnitude of −4.6, bright enough to cast shadows. [ 12 ] Venus is an inferior planet with an angular elongation of 47.8°. The planet is at its maximum brightness just before sunrise or just after sunset, hence the name Morning Star or Evening Star. Earth is the third planet from the Sun and the only astronomical object known to harbor life. This is enabled by Earth being an ocean world, the only one in the Solar System sustaining liquid surface water. Almost all of Earth's water is contained in its global ocean, covering 70.8% of Earth's crust. The remaining 29.2% of Earth's crust is land, most of which is located in the form of continental landmasses within Earth's land hemisphere. Most of Earth's land is somewhat humid and covered by vegetation, while large sheets of ice at Earth's polar deserts retain more water than Earth's groundwater, lakes, rivers and atmospheric water combined. Earth's crust consists of slowly moving tectonic plates, which interact to produce mountain ranges, volcanoes, and earthquakes. Earth has a liquid outer core that generates a magnetosphere capable of deflecting most of the destructive solar winds and cosmic radiation. Mars is the fourth closest planet to the Sun. It is named after the Roman god of war , Mars . It is often referred to as the "Red Planet" because it appears reddish from a distance. This is due to the presence of iron(III) oxide on the surface of Mars. [ 6 ] Mars is a rocky planet with a thin atmosphere . The surface of Mars contains craters, volcanoes, valleys, deserts, and ice caps . The rotation period and seasonal cycle of Mars are similar to those of Earth. On Mars stands Olympus Mons , the highest mountain in the Solar System, and Valles Marineris , the largest valley in the Solar System. In addition, in the northern hemisphere is the Borealis Basin which covers 40% of the Martian surface. [ 7 ] [ 8 ]
