Online Heroines is a web series about the experiences of New Zealand women filmmakers. Women are hugely underrepresented in the film and television industries worldwide (the stats on Hollywood & Australia are particularly bleak), and New Zealand is no exception to that. What are New Zealand women filmmakers doing if they aren’t participating in our traditional industries?
This project hopes to explore the experiences of those who choose to produce and publish their work online; what processes they use to create their work, how they define success, what influences their choice to make and publish media online, as well as what limitations still exist and what challenges they foresee in the future of online video publishing and production.

Candle Wasters - Nothing Much To Do // Online Heroines
The Candles Wasters are a group of young women (Claris Jacobs, Elsie Bollinger, Minnie Grace, and Sally Bollinger) who create webseries. Their first three productions are inspired by the works of William Shakespeare, and they have started to set their sights on creating original content. So cool to hear how critically they think about creating things for the internet, and that they make things that they want to see!
So much happens behind the curtains with youtubers, it's so interesting to hear a bit more about the ins and outs, especially from someone a) from a small country/community b) a woman and c) who is making more specialised content. Thanks so much Charli for sharing those insights!
