If you’re talking about intermodal speeds? CSX, UP and BNSF all have 70 MPH intermodal speeds in some areas. NS has a max speed of 60 for Intermodal. Not 50.

Some towns will ask the railroads to lower speeds in some areas. But ultimately federal law dictates that and there are no federal laws requiring trains to slow down in urban areas. Amtrak has stations where trains pass through at up to 150 MPH. Plenty of freight lines run intermodal trains through stations at 70 MPH. And there are lots of railroad crossings with speeds as high as 110 mph in different parts of the US.

Freight can’t run at 79. There aren’t any freight locomotives geared for a speed that high. Either way, BNSF has a maximum speed for freight trains on their entire system of 70 MPH. Also, class 3 track is only good for 60. It would be class 4 track that would allow an MAS of 80 for passenger train with proper signal upgrades

@@FFred-us9tw Whatever class it was, I just know fastest I tracked at Mentmore, NM westbound with my laser speedo was: Freight (well cars) 81 mph, Amtrack 94 mph (scared the shit out of me). They _absolutely_ can go 70-80 mph on level grade (modern locos use electric traction motors); I've seen it myself. Whether or not they are _supposed_ to, Idk.

@@jul1440 what you’re describing is not possible if you understand how railroads operate. Modern diesel locomotives are geared for a maximum speed, for GE it’s typically 75 and for most EMD’s it’s 70. If the locomotive exceeds that speed by typically 2 to 3 mph it will go into a penalty application and stop. This is built into the locomotive. On top of that, the locomotives are all equipped with something known as PTC or positive train control. This will not allow more than 2 miles over the speed limit under any circumstances. If a train exceeds that speed it will stop the train and the crew can be disciplined for it. BNSF railway has a system wide maximum speed for intermodal trains of 70 mph on its entire system. There is nowhere on BNSF where they allow intermodal trains to operate faster than that. So there’s no way you saw what you claim. Which is also why you conveniently don’t have any footage of it either. This is typical with all the railfans claiming that they’ve seen freight trains operating at impossible speeds. They always claim to have radared it or lasered it on the one day they forgot their camera conveniently.

@@FFred-us9tw I actually have _stereoscopic_ footage. PTC is only _very_ sparsely deployed in my region (and not at all for Rail Runner routes). Some tracks even run for almost 200 miles unsignalized. A quick google search also leads to millions of results that respectfully disagree with you.

And since you seem to be such a self-proclaimed expert on this, what is the federal railway administration maximum speed allowed on tracks with no signals? See if you can find the answer to that. Your math is not accurate. Their is two locomotive lengths that matter. Length of the locomotive itself and length over pulling faces.
