The day didn’t start out promising with a full moon, wind and sargassum but it ended up being my best day of fishing since moving to the Yucatan…so far. I ended up covered in bonefish most of the day as well as had multiple shots at permit, cuda, blue runners and bar jacks. Not a bad half day of fishing as I only moved 80 yards up and down the beach. We are so blessed to live in such an amazing...

I finally managed to land my first decent sized yellow amberjack on the fly here in the Yucatán. We are amazed at the incredible table fare that this fish provided both as sashimi and cooked in butter and garlic. So delicious! Hooked on a chartreuse Tarpon Toad.

    That's some easy splitting wood! Thry don't all come apart like that. What species?

    I always forget in these kind of videos, and guys that use axes, etc; that they aren't splitting things like oak, elm, hickory, etc. Don't think it would work on anything but pine or birch. If anyone has done this on hardwood let me know.

      Thanks and welcome to the channel! I only use the 12 weight TFO when the possibility of getting spooked is real. Almost happened a couple times with my 8 weights. The TFO is definitely a good value rod! I had a 5 weight back in Canada before we moved. Hopefully we can get out soon again and add some more content🎣🌴🇲🇽

      Spend 6 hours in the sunshine with the sun reflecting off the water and you will understand why. We prefer our skin less than ‘well-done’. Not a big fan of sunscreen as most brands can cause cancer.

    Brent.... I started watching your video and realized your Canadian right away (I'm from Kitchener ON) I'm leaving for Mexico next week for my annual month long fly fishing trip near Belize. I fish pretty much like you do mostly blind especially if the water is churned up. I love that you don't know what your going to get and some days we get just a mess of "feeder fish" take them home for a big fish fry. Good fishing and possibly I may see you on the flats. Best of luck, John

    • @TheStonesheepsteve
      @TheStonesheepsteve 10 місяців тому

      Thanks for the reply John! Yes, it’s mostly blind fishing down here in our home waters…but the weeks after this video I hit some great weather(low waves and no wind) and I had my best day down here so far. Landed 2 big bones, a cero mackerel, lost a cuda and another good fish. Had two big tarpon also cruise by at close range that a had a shot at. Not bad for 3 hours of fishing and not even having to move. Unfortunately I got water in my GoPro so it’s out of commission. Are you heading to Chetumal or Xcalak? Best of luck!

      @@TheStonesheepsteve Thanks for the response Brent, we're off to mahahual, we stay in a very "humble" hotel on the beach long past the downtown on the road up the coast towards Belize. I pick my spots based on the weather and wind direction. Hard fishing most days usually comes down to a lot of walking to find schools or, if we're lucky... we can see fish and spot cast for bones and permit. I'll reply again once we start fishing and give you and update and to see how your making out. Good luck to you as well. John

      Thanks for the detailed comment Bob. By chance we booked with Roger at Punto Ponto. He was an excellent host! We met two groups of fellow Canadians there who were repeat customers who were there to chase Tarpon with Ismael. After hearing their stories we decided to book 4 hours to get a taste of tarpon fishing. Since we only live 3 1/2 hrs away in Puerto Morelos, we will be back to chase the big migratory tarpon during the summer.

    I just saw a video where Thoren Bradley did this..I said finally, stop picking big chunks of wood up off the ground when you split a big huge one and there's two big huge chunks on the ground after you've knocked them both off after splitting a big huge round! I have been doing the tire thing, bc it was convenient bc in a VC farm, there were tires at hand... but you're right, it's a waste of time because I had to have two different size tires at least cuz I had a gotten into big rounds and had to walk way down in the woods and get a really big huge tire and roll it uphill, drag it it uphill: not fun!! Back then I had a golf cart. Never thought much of the tire thingy until watching these videos. I'm getting done chain etc!! I had already decided after watching Thorn Bradley to get chain and a bungee strap. Much lighter and portable than stinking tires!!. You are so right about that!!!.! I knew about the chain and bungee long time ago but I we got tires laying around so I was just using tires but just got me thinking so I really appreciate the video I hope everybody listen to this and doesn't very safe much safer than smacking At wood with a hatchet and holding it with your other hand when doing kindling. This way you're able to keep your thumb and your fingers attached to your hand ✋!!!

    I've always had good luck with DYI bonefish along the Yucatan. if you don't see fish, look for areas of murky water which could be from mudding rays or from an upwelling spring. Fish will congregate there.

    • @TheStonesheepsteve
      @TheStonesheepsteve Рік тому

      Thanks for the information, Dick. Appreciate your insight. The area we were fishing was close to home but it isn’t ideal bonefish area as it’s 3’ deep and deeper. Will keep plugging away on that learning curve Cheers

    I would be willing to try the technique, but I can guarantee that most of the wood around here would never split that easily. When I was younger I split quite a bit of Maple, Birch, beach, cherry, oak, and similar woods.
