    I wonder why this is never talked about in the fitness world. I mean boomers talk about getting "toned" but what they really mean is shedding body fat and increasing muscle hypertrophy in order to bring out more definition, not this.

    • @PediatricTherapyEssentials
      @PediatricTherapyEssentials 18 днів тому

      You are correct. The concept of muscle tone is widely misunderstood. In PT and OT school we learn a lot about it as we often work with individuals with neurologic injuries. In these instances muscle tone is an important consideration for recovery.

    Interesting, this includes a lot of occupational therapy. I've heard that OT has overlap with PT but this is my first time seeing the reverse. 👍🏽

      I really like to incorporate fine motor activities into my strengthening and gross motor tasks. These activities often add to the difficulty level improving a patient's stability. Plus, they usually make things more fun!

    My son was the moat stiff infant ive every seen. He couldn't playvw his feet. He walked at 8 mths old but very high on his toes. The dr dismissed all of this. It wasn't until he was 3 and we went to a neurologist who put in physical therapy, eventually had boots to sleep in. However, the surgeon decided he was way to tight and we went forward w surgery whenhe was 4. Hes now 8 and im starting to see him going up on his toes a bit again. When you ask him to touch his toes he can barely reach his knees. Also needs to build core strength. We've been doing some yoga but do don't like it because hes very active and mostly because it hurts. Im quite worried. I will definitely be working with him on all the activities. I worry these were activities i should have been doing with him as a toddler. I worked with him but if i would have listened to my own instincts maybe i could have stretched him out as a baby and possibly saved him from needing surgery. I just want to make sure im doing everything i can do fir him now. Thank you for the great information!!

    Nice video! In the high muscle tone condition why do you have to go back to the ideal resting tension first before going back up to the desired tension necessary to say kick a ball?

    • @McCarthy1776
      @McCarthy1776 Місяць тому

      The only way that makes sense to me in this scenario is that to kick the ball you have to rear your leg back before moving it forward to kick. The prime mover muscles have to relax to become hyper extended(the limb moving in the opposite direction). if the hip flexors and quads that produce the kicking motion are have too much muscle tone, too "tight" then theyd have to relax before you could move your leg backwards. However the high muscle tone would still increase the speed in which you kick the ball forward, it's just the backward movement that slows you down. All muscles are in a delicate balance of tension and have antagonist muscles that work against them. Tight triceps will make contracting the bicep use more energy. That's what makes stretching a complicated thing. If you stretch a muscle too much you release the tension from it which will reduce contraction speed and power, but if the antagonist muscle is too tight and not stretched enough then it will also reduce contraction speed and power. It's also easier to tear a muscle that's too tight, but tight muscles produce a lot of force in the direction that they contract. Shit gets complicated.

    • @McCarthy1776
      @McCarthy1776 Місяць тому

      That can effect your posture too. If you see someone with their pelvis tilting forward and their lower back abnormally rounded they probably have tight hip flexors and high muscle tone in the hip flexors but loose low tone gluten, and when one or 2 muscles get out of balance and shift your posture then other muscles have to compensate to maintain your body in an upright position so then other muscles will become too tight and others too loose. It could throw off the entire body if one or 2 muscles are off because the musculoskeletal system is one big chain. Then the posture effects the nervous system, we don't know exactly how but if you slouch your serotonin drops, some studies suggest testosterone drops and you feel less confident. Standing upright with your chest out actually boosts confidence and serotonin. We can even observe this in lobsters. Lobsters with higher social status stand more upright and lobsters with lower status slouch, if they fight and one loses then his serotonin drops and he slouches. Then giving Lobsters serotonin boosters or SSRIs makes them stand up straight and become more aggressive and confident again. So your muscles are important for much more than just looking good on the beach lol. Fitness and muscular tension balance effect everything in the body one way or another.
