Flood July 11, 2024, river on the rise
The Passumpsic River, between Lyndonville VT and St Johnsbury VT. This is the highest water I have ever seen from my yard. I was told by the neighbor that it is near CREST POINT. I told him: "It is not over with yet"
With more rain on the way .... we shall see.
I happened upon a family of Voles, digging their way UP and OUT of the flood waters. I showed up and they decided to tunnel back into flooded ground. I left, so they would not be bothered by me any more. I hope they decide to smarten up and move elsewhere, soon. Poor little guys.

Black Ash Basketmaking: Beavers
Переглядів 93214 років тому
Beavers moved in and flooded a huge Black Ash Grove. This killed off over 500 good Basket trees. Once the beavers had eaten all the Poplar trees they moved on. This type of thing is a very real threat to the Native Basketmakers. This once beautiful and productive Black Ash Grove was reduced to nothing more than a graveyard of dead trees standing in stagnant water. It resembles some Sci-Fi scene...

Black Ash Basket Making. www.abenakibaskets.com/ A lot of people have asked how I make the Black Ash Baskets. This may not be the best video I have ever seen .. however .. it is the best I could do .. on short notice. Please enjoy it.
I think we're a little behind this year. Like two months!
I think the Ice went out .. a little at a time .. already this year .. in places.
Think you're right Jess. Wonder how it would be canoeing down through with the ice. Looks like some more snow this Thursday. I'm really looking forward to some nice sunny warm days!
Looks kind of rough for canoeing. You gotta get back into it bud.
I believe you have a good plan there ..
few questions does this have be freshly cut green log or can pond old dried out long get these basket make material. two have extreme strong to hite force make come apart as seen vedas people cracking walnuts with bare hands either old nut easy crack or super strong crack new nut that full water?
(1) Green, fresh cut = is OK . Soaked in a Pond = is OK, Dried = is OK ( Dealers Choice.) (2) How hard to strike every inch, overlapping each strike: NO NEED to beat it to death ... start out gently hitting it , move down the log. don't sit there and keep hitting the same spot hoping the splint will just magically come off. Or some people just have their own dialects and you can get the hell over it.
Who thinks Mitt Romeney has spoken in this Ad, thumps up!
Or fruit conserve... if thou doth spake 18th Century English ;0)
So sad that we're losing all our ash trees in Michigan!
Anytime of the year is ok, I like to cut them before the blackfly season, or after. Blackfly's suck. Thanks for the thumbs up on the video. I filmed it by myself .. tripod, self timer.
What is the best time of the year for harvesting the log to make these splits? You did a good job on this video, much appreciated.
wow lol necer seen one till now
European Ash, pine, oak not going work as well as black ash or brown ash or green ash. You can use Oak, however the process is separating the actual growth rings with a Knife ather than pounding, You can check out White Oak Baskets from the south if you like.
European Ash, White is not going work as well as black ash or brown ash or green ash. It will be brittle and shatter when you try to separate the growth rings. Sorry about that mate.
can we use european ash or other kinds of woods such as pine, oak, beech, birch?
Seasoned Black ash is fine to use .. however you should soak the dried out log .. before pounding it. Makes it easier to pound, less cracking of the splints as you pound and pull off .. roll up. Dried splints will crack = bad.
Does it only work with fresh wood or can i make splints with seasoned ash?
2 slices of toast
Question???? Is this a one slice or two slice of bread toaster?
I have a simular toaster, do not buy it's the biggest crap you'll ever buy
Thanks so much. I'm in search of a black ash tree at the moment.
I couldn't afford to pay attention. Pass the collection plate and the jelly please ( When in your kitchen-church). Have some fun !
You can afford a professional website but not a proper mic? Anyway, gotta get on of those. The kitchen will become my church.
Hi, I'm enjoying your videos on Blash Ash for basketry, but as I live in the UK, it's very hard to find Fraxinus Nigra here, but we DO have tons and tons of Fraxinus Excelsior (European Ash, White) - before I go and source a log and start pounding, I'm intereseted to hear your opinion on whether or not this would be a suitable tree to make strips for basketry?
Toaster options... "Frozen, Reheat and Resurrect."
i need one.
LOVE the video and the explanation and the baskets on your website = lovely work, so perfect.
