Most Underrated Movie of the Year! Things Will Be Different - Review
In my opinion, this is an excellent movie in so many ways. It is well written, the acting (especially Daniel Craig and Drew Starkey) is superb. The cinematography is phenomenal. It definitely represents the lives and the psychology of gay men at two very different stages of self-acceptance in the early '50s. So, why is it so divisive? Why do some love it and some hate it? I think it has to do with a few things. First, there are people who are homophobes and hate queer movies. Not sure why they went (LOL--yes, I am pretty sure, at least). Second, it has a lot of metaphors in it. People's brains tend to be dichotomous as to whether they are linear thinkers and like movies in which everything is spelled out for them OR they are less concrete and more associative thinkers and like the many interpretations of metaphors. Of course, it's really a continuum, but these are the extremes. People at the first extreme (more concrete thinkers) would hate this movie and not understand its true meaning. Those at the other extreme probably would love it. As you say, it's the story of a gay man in middle-age (former military) who lives in Mexico. He's a drug addict, which likely represents the misery he experiences as a gay man in the '50s. He says he's in Mexico because his drug habit would get him imprisoned in the U.S. Remember, though, this was the era of McCarthyism, and his homosexuality also may have gotten him imprisoned--as a "communist"). So, he lives in Mexico and is seeking a meaningful gay relationship. Unfortunately, all he finds is superficial hook-ups. He sees and becomes infatuated with Eugene, a younger man who is struggling with his queer identity and is unable to accept it. Yet, he is drawn to Lee, the older man. This sets the stage for what is to occur. The part that I think really confuses people and is off-putting for them is Chapter 3 with the telepathy augmenting drug in South America. This is the metaphor for the struggle that Eugene is going through, knowing that he is attracted to men, specifically Lee, and denying his own homosexuality. Lee "hears" the thoughts of Eugene during their drug intoxication, "I AM NOT QUEER!" Ultimately, Eugene runs away in an effort to escape his sexuality. And Lee lives on alone, lonely, and grieving over the loss of Eugene, and dies a miserable death. Whie the movie has a hit of romance; it really is a tragedy of two gay men who are at very different stages of their lives and unable to connect in the early '50s. That is my assessment of the movie. The book is available on Amazon either in hard copy or digital version.
I’m Brazilian, but if I could ask for one thing, it would be: give this movie a chance. It’s not just a masterpiece of Brazilian cinema, it’s a reminder of a time that can never be repeated, but which the world lives under constant threat of. Recently, Brazil also had to face the ghost and the threats of an authoritarian government. It’s for us to never forget. So it never happens again. May Brazilian history echo in the name of those who suffered under the military regime.
The AQUI in Ainda Estou Aqui is silent, so it's pronounced "Ahkey"
Will you make a top 10 2024 movies video??
As teased, the top 10 of 2024 vid has been filmed and is currently in the editing bay :)
Fernanda torres really deserves the that best actress nomination!!
I'm Still Here doesn't aim to be a historical movie, but rather a very personal story based off of the youngest son Marcelo's recollection of events as per his 2014 book by the same name, as well as Salles' own experience of being a young child who frequented the Paiva household. Though I appreciate you guys' interest in the very important history that frames the movie, I do think this is to be taken into consideration - it was never meant to be a history lesson, but to show the real people behind said history. Brazil does, however, have many movies about this time period, with several different perspectives - about the coup itself, about the guerrilla, about what it was like for lower class workers, indigenous and black people, rural workers, and many more. I strongly encourage to research more about these if they interest you, Brazilian cinema is very rich and a great way to learn.
What an emotional rollercoaster, exceptional work. What the hell was that moment when someone slit another guys throat using broken glass on a banister or something?
Thanks for the compliment :) If you're referring to 8:32, that is Life After Fighting.

The dictatorship was extremely cruel! People tied to ropes and carried in asphault by cars... children of all ages being killed with the hughest levels of cruelty... people being thrown from planes to die with the impact of the fall... black people could not grow their hair... if you were considered a suspect of talking something agains the government that was it for you... and more and more and more... so the ghost of diabolic cruelty ISIS-like is all over the movie...

This was made by someone who understands cinema.
Na época do regime Militar no Brasil .eles sumiam com as pessoas .e ninguém podia reclamar de nada pois teria o mesmo fim
Part of the sadness surrounding the Brazilian military dictatorship is the fact that people simply disappeared and no one never got to know what happened to their loved ones. Were they kept in captivity? Were they tortured? Were they killed? Was it quick? Was it painful? This NOT KNOWING that leaves just a little bit of hope among some of the most gruesome scenarios imaginable... That's a psychological torture on its own and that's what the movie is about. It's sad that some people are not able to pick up on such a subtle yet strong message...
A melhor! Nosso orgulho
Loved seeing Exhibiting Forgiveness getting a call out. I did not expect it to hit as strong as it did when I watched it a few weeks back. Great double feature pairing with Calvary (2014). I just happened to watch both of these close together and they complement each other so well. Highly recommend anyone wanting to check out either of them watch the other. Similar ideas but from different angles as well. Bonus I finished a rewatch of Ted Lasso with my wife this last year and that show fits really well with those two as well.
Congratulations to Fernanda Torres🏆 I’m still here is set to hit theaters in New York and Los Angeles on January 17, 2025, and a wide release is expected on February 14. I’m making plans to go see it in theaters 🎥🍿 It is a big moment for Brazilian cinema…
This movie is incredibly important to our history especially in current times where far right "patriots" attack and deny the things shown in this movie and the book, Bolsonaro even spat on Rubens's statue a few years back. My mom was born on the beginning of the dictatorship and she remembers it vividly. The ones affected are still here, we shouldnt let their suffering happen again
🇧🇷👑😁👑😁🤷🇧🇷🤷🇧🇷
I remember my family renting this movie. If this is his best film, he needs a new career.
A brilliant piece of editing! One of the most underestimated skills in filmmaking. This was superb!
@ wasn’t a particular one I was referring to! Just the whole thing! But love that you started it with the low budget Things Will Be Different. Undiscovered gem of a film!
@@namesy Somebody else asked and commented on the wrong one, my bad haha. Things Will Be Different was one of my faves of 2024!
I can't imagine how long this took to put together. Very well done. Such a great year of movies.
Amazing job! Can't imagine how long that took to put together :o
Well done !
This is Worst Rober Egger worst Movie and Alexander Skarsgård is the worst actor of alltime
Joking, right? I swear, it’s like Alexander Skarsgard is such a method actor that he was born Scandinavian just to prepare to play a Viking in this movie.
@@batbrick3949 His Father is Great but alexander skarsgard make every movie made worst by his Trash emotionless acting
So many great movies... What a Amazing year 2024...Awesome video ❤
i saw nosferatu a few years ago and was kind of iffy about it (it had some orchestral soundtrack), and this past october I saw the version with the two Radiohead albums in theaters and it was SOOOOOOOOOO GOOD
Stupendous
Great job man. Hope people discover this
Shakespeare is Early Modern English. Old English, and even Middle English are indecipherable to contemporary speakers.
true! I meant to say 'older English' but Old English would be quite unintellegible. - Ewan
Loved this, great job! 🔥
I’m not much of a history buff, but I’m not sure that’s what 1980s New England looked like 😂
I misspoke! It's 1890s New England ofc

Good review there lads
You thought Sacha Baron Cohens character was the best?!?! He made me so angry from the beginning. He never listened to his wife when she kept trying to explain. After the big reveal in episode 7 I said I would've never forgiven him for that, I was so happy when Cates character said the same thing.
You've gotta take a gamble and go outside the box if you want to create greatness. If he does nothing else - he is a genius for Kids (writer), Gummo, Umshini Wam and Julien. Most directors never create one truly original and groundbreaking piece - Korine has somehow created several.
For me the problem was not the non-linear storytelling mimicking his state of mind, but rather that the "reveals" were a real letdown and, frankly, boring, especially relative to his anxiety at the beginning in "revealing" the truth and exposing himself as a fraud!! But then maybe that’s also part of the point … that the “bad” person we see ourselves as is not really all that bad nor scandalous to others!
Ask her to say something about the families of those who were arrested in 2023 and sentenced to 17 years without DUE LEGAL PROCESS. Ask her how she feels about the wife of the man who died in prison for having been denied proper medical care by the Supreme Court
EVERYTHING SEEN IN THIS FILME WAS SPONSORED BY FBI CIA AND THE TERRORIST AMERICAN GOVERNMENT BACK IN THE DAY !!! We brazilians know the truth from inside out !!!! Kissinger reports are a disgrace and sole proof of the North American Intervention in South America. It is the same terrorist government that sponsors those Jewish Rapscallians in their genocide against Palestinian people !!
I watched the film twice back to back yesterday and again for a third time this morning. Jolie's performance was absolutely extraordinary! I dare to say that this film showcases her greatest work to date! No other actress in contention for an Academy Award nomination in the lead actress category comes close to the brilliance of Jolie's flawless performance! 💯🎭🏆
I completely understand you guys wanting more of a background and for the movie to explore the dictatorship more, but its not about untouched potential, its a sensible choice. PLEASE, just give it a search. Movies are great for learning stuff, but how much time would it cost to research a bit of Brazil’s dictatorship? I guarantee you it would intensify the emotions you feel through the movie tenfold.
The wondering at the end is because that is how it happened, she got Alzheimer and forgot.
Hi from Alaska, Hawaii, New Zealand & the moon.
Fernanda Torres is an icon! She deserves all the awards
I was born in Brazil during those horrible times, so I'm older than the democratic Statehood of my country, which in itself is so crazy. Without a doubt, I wish my fellow Americans to make means to find a theater wherein this movie is available; it is a hard and cruel portrait of our childhood and gives a real illustration of living in a country that embraces the "going after the enemy from within" rhetoric.
