Improve your riding position! Technique vs Equipment edition
Good Equitation is an ART
Not only is it beautiful to watch, but because of our individual journey towards mastery.
As an instructor, I'm always looking for new ways to help riders improve and really feel confident in their abilities. I enjoyed trying out these resistance bands and can see where they would be very beneficial.... HOWEVER :)
Knowledge is power and something no one can take away from you. Something that you solve, heal or accomplish through learning and first hand experience is beyond confidence building. It’s extremely powerful and it will completely transform and rewire you. This has been a key element in equestrian sport, this is horsemanship, developing not only the equine athlete but the human one. If we take shortcuts in our training, and I’m not referring to the resistance bands alone, I’m now speaking to the rate at which we produce and develop horses, are we not shortcutting both athletes?
It takes as long as it takes… mind, body and spirit.

Position and body language is very meaningful to the horse, both in the saddle and on the ground. When we're on their back, our position can have both positive and negative effects on the horse's balance and way of going. Riding is a dance, if you want to become a good partner, learn not only the steps but to follow your partner.

Why not ride like that with the reins, all of the time?

Soften your hands! 71 and never knew it was my elbows that needed to soften! 🙄

Ohhhh yes!! This is another great example, thank you for sharing! 'Relax your fingers" is another one that is full of good intentions, but can often cause us to slip the reins.

I hate when I don't have a plan! But sometimes the horses show me what we need to work on. But a plan helps!

Absolutely. Those days can be super fun and are important. Having a plan most days though, is an important baseline.

What would you recommend with split reins?

Hi @arcaciawegleitner4082 It depends which aspect of the split rein you're referring to? If your reins are new, they may be stiff and not offer the nicest feel. I would soak them, work them, and then oil them if that's the case. If your goal is to ride one handed, that's a developmental progression. Starting in a snaffle with direct, single rein contact is still part of their education. As the horse get stronger and more educated about the outside rein you can move to riding with one hand. This takes time and consistency
