I WENT FOR AN EXPLORATORY FISH AT THE RAKAIA LAGOON ON THE NORTH SIDE. IT WAS A NICE WAY TO SPEND A COUPLE OF HOURS. THE MOUTH WAS LOOKING GREAT.

Went for a technical ride with switchbacks, steep and loose surface, up to Villas Bukit Lipah for breakfast. Stunning location and superb menu and food. Lovely staff. The accomodation looks amazing. The south side of the loop road is much easier and if you are not experienced in adventure riding or a competent biker I wouldn’t go around the north side. This place is well worth a visit. THE NORTH RAKAIA RIVER MOUTH, MAY 12TH
Ive had a great session down there before. If you drive a good 200 meters to the right youd find the spot i was at. Caught 10 kahawai within the hour.
Certainly a nice spot. Thanks for the tip.
Dont get sucked in, you'll never be seen again 😱 Always let the rod go and dont try to rescue your phone or dog.
There's a few missing people out there that's for sure!
Is that where the new mine is being planned?
Used to be some great sea-run trout in the lagoon a few years ago, I hear they have all but disappeared
@bilgerat711 hi thanks for watching and commenting. I caught a small one a couple years ago. It's white bait season so I think I'll try some streamer flies and skinny white softbaits around the mouth. Maybe they are creeping about. It's still a lovely spot to hang out.
What do you do for a job you seem to be always fishing Cheers Andy A
@bumcy2010 Hi and thanks for watching. I wish I was always fishing but I get out as much as I can on the weekends. I don't have kids so it may appear I am out more than I actually am!! I am a builder though.
I think a good bit of bait is always a good way to start in a new area..
@mauricebrown9094 I would love to have got baiting up but it is under the freshwater regulations there as the lagoon is still part of the Rakaia river. Thanks.
Good to see you with a rod back in your hands Pal.
@mauricebrown9094 I got a few videos to editing post. I'm getting to it.
If you are going to Bali make sure you visit Amed , 4 nights minimum I would recommend
I'll have you know, there's nothing easy about 'stuffed bird' waving! Much underrated endurance sport.
@@danielwoolf9472 I think he had the easier job though! It was 30 degrees
You gotta point I s'pose. You could've helped. Typical tourist. 😊@@StuWNZ
I was going to help but then who would hold the camera!
Can you tell us what length of surf rod you are using there please? Thanks!
Hi I use a 14.5 and a 14 foot. I think you need a 14 toot for heavy duty surf casting at least. I have an Abu Veritas and a Daiwa Laguna X.
I need to try here. Awesome rod stand, how far walking is that from the main carpark?
@micagroupltd hi thanksfor watching. Walking wouldn't be far 400m maybe. It's all too easy on the quad. 😃
The rod stand is good. You can buy then in the uk but the postage is more than the standard.
Slice of paradise right there
@SoleAdventuresNZ certainly is lovely. 30 degrees but not too humid, perfect really.
Used to fish up the other end about 3km way up .Catch and release sharks
@kw4690 that sounds like fun. I've been trying to catch a shark but only got a carpet shark so far.
Birdlings Flat, the beach of perfectly flat and round stones.
@@spudpud-T67 it’s a popular spot for geologists collecting stones.
@@StuWNZ I have about 10 perfect stones from there. I turned wooden boxes for the stones to be lids. It's just amazing to look down and see such perfect stones, a beach full.
Good content Stuart
Thanks for watching and commenting
Wrasse are ok to eat
@murraygallagher1892 yes I returned this one but I do eat them. Make a nice fillet. Even the spotties make a good fillet.
Office golf😂 matee any jobs there 😂😂
@@SoleAdventuresNZ no sadly not!
I have dived in this location a few times in clean water. Is rather shallow for the first 30 meters and has a few large boulders around half the size of car., at a guess you getting caught on those
@bruce271085 I found a few clear casting lanes but I think the wrasse were dragging me into foul to a point. No doubt i landed on a few big boulders too. Next time you are out diving there's a good few sinkers hooked up for you!
It does look a bit miserable out there 🌧 Can't wait for summer.
@Fishingreminder this was a few weeks ago early July it was pretty Grey and drizzly.yes roll on summer!
Awesome drone shots. Nothing like having a good cuppa with some beautiful scenery
@@SoleAdventuresNZ certainly is great being outdoors and enjoying the place.
I met you 2days ago. I wanted to know this area’s fishing information very much!! I’m glad to know your channel
Hi down at the Rakaia Lagoon? Thanks for subscribing.
@@StuWNZ yes,at lagoon. Looking forward to your next video!
Thanks brother. I’m from leeston and just started fishing birding flats and found your videos helpful thanks again
Hi and thanks for watching! Coopers Lagoon is good easy foot access to the beach and it is much closer to Leeston. A friend of mine gets some nice fish there.
I see the new drone is put to good use already :)
@Fishingreminder well that was the dji air from work. My mini 2 SE will make an appearance soon. It goes great though
@@StuWNZ awesome, the DJI Mini is the best drone out there in my opinion
Nice video mate. Love how you always have a fire and I bet the pot noodle went down well on that cold day. I have a veritas too. What pound braid/leader do you run for your kahawai fishing? Cheers
Hi thanks. Yes it was cold it's always good to light a fire but we didn't have much luck with that wet wood. I run 50lb braid. I have found that anything lighter doesn't stand up to the abuse of surf casting and knots seem to fail. I use a 60lb leader, sometimes a 40lb if i am fishing 3/0 hooks.
@@StuWNZ Awesome. Great advice. Cheers
Bloody great thanks. Have been wanting to learn how to do that. Cheers
@jaynz247 thanks for watching. Once you've tied it once it's really easy.
I think that person you have trapped wants to get out
That's the neighbour banging on his roof!
Some feed back on this would be good. If you can tie a knot from this please let me know.
Thanks for that - I am just trying to get into fishing after having not fished since I was a kid, I haven't been out yet and was thinking of heading over the hill to Port Levy and I think I will after seeing your vid. Where did you get those little Berley pouch things from they look like a great idea.
@seorwulf1049 hi thanks for watching. Yes great idea fishing is a great way to get out and about and enjoy the place. I made the Berley pouches up there is a video on my channel somewhere.

Hey Stu, was great meeting up with you today and looking forward to a collaboration. Just been catching up on your recent videos. Some awesome content. Great editing and filming, keep it up!
Same it was great to meet up. Now we know neither of us are crazies😀. Look forward to getting out there sometime. thanks for watching 😀
Great stuff! Love the fire and your set up. Would have loved to see what took your crab. Any Rig about over the winter months. Cheers
Thanks for watching and commenting 🙂 Rig are few and far between over winter unfortunately. WE catch them through to May but then they seem to move away.
Scottish bloke stole the show !!!
Hi did seem to do a lot of needless talking.
You three gay boys all have tiny rods!
I blame pom pom for allowing that😅😂
I reckon he set me up!
Looked like a tuff days fishing . At least you got 1 for the pan 😊
Yeah, that'll feed the 5000 that catch!!!

Just moved from Northland to Woodend, lots to learn about where to fish here. Love you videos.
Thanks for the compliment. Where abouts in Northland? I used to live at Whangaruru and near Whangarei. Beautiful area.
@@StuWNZ We came from Tinopai, we have friends are in Oakura - awesome fishing up there. Maybe we bump into each other here. There’s so much I need to learn about sea and rivers here, and have to retrain from old fishing methods / habits.
@@micagroupltd The fishing is pretty quiet through the winter but still worth getting and having a go. Good time to explore spots for the summer.
@@micagroupltd We will have to tee up a fishing trip sometime. You can message me on my Instagram (which I'm trying to get going!)
What brand of soft baits are they!???
hi I use Daiwa bait junkie and Z-man softbaits. The Berkley ones are not very good quality.
My favourite fish to catch and eat
Certainly is a great fish to catch, cook and use for bait.
I would just like to add that the sea weed was released unharmed incase any vegans were concerned about it.
Yea it's all rubble where your casting out and snaggs. Down the end is where you want to be some decent moki are there.
yeah i was casting out beyond the rocks with the bigger weights but the sabiki I was just giving a it a flick and getting caught up. I'm hoping to get some Moki there in the summer. thanks for watching.
Mean location bro! Love the vids !
Thanks!. The mouth goes off with Kahawai when the conditions are good. It's 3km from the nearest road so a bit of a mission without wheels!

Hi mate can I use a lure in the warf?
Hi you could or softbaits. Not sure what you'd pick up- maybe a kahawai.
From a boaties perspective the ocean looks calm. Swell is about 2 meters, big, but no sea (wave on top of swell). No breaking waves outside shore break. No good for fishing. Get out of there to better ground.
I'd love to have a jetski to get out there!
Really enjoy your videos especialy the fishing ones!
Thanks! I'll be putting out more fishing videos before winter. I had a disaster with my car so couldn't get out much this summer.
Thanks for that and will look forward to what it looks like from the north side. I fished from the south this season but it doesn’t look all that inviting at the moment. Ps is there an episode that I have missed regarding the scuba-diving car?
I'll get down the north side and check it out and hopefully it's calmed off so I can get a line wet.
I haven't got a video of my car scuba diving
Nice trip!!!
certainly was great fun
I spoke to the Engineer at work and he estimates the depth based on a 6 second free fall would be 172 meters deep.
