Have you looked at Saul from the psychological perspective of PTSD? I have much more compassion and empathy for him after I researched the brutality required of men in ancient civilizations’ hand-to-hand combat. Only recently has PTSD been acknowledged as a psychological disorder. Maybe it’s time to see Saul from a different perspective? As we know, David, who is seen as the hero, succumbs to adultery, brutality, paranoia, and murder. How many people, suffering from PTSD, are hearing that they have an evil spirit, or that God has left them? Maybe the story of Saul shows a boy, who just wanted to find his father’s donkeys, but instead, found himself in the center of a religious and military war that sacrificed his psychological well-being? What price did this young man pay to be Israel’s first “king”? And how did David, even though he is seen as the hero, also succumb to the weight of political and military power? I think these are important questions to think about and discuss.
