The Mandelbulb3D fractal generator application is free and open-source software that generates fractal images in the style of the Mandelbulb, which is a three-dimensional rendering of the Mandelbrot set. In short, the Mandelbulb3D application produces 'generative graphics' by combining mathematical formulas which are then translated to pixels. This process is enabled by the processing power of ...

    Love this subject and the metaphysical aspects. However, and I know you all have felt and heard this... the application interface and modules is so antiquated and is maddening. However again, this channel has been a great resource for me. ..if I was decades younger and had the time I would bring the application into the 21st century! Surely there is a young 20 something programmer with the gumption....

      I share your pain. But, like an old car, it get's you to your destination (most of the time). A remake of Mandelbulb3D was done back in the 2015 timeframe (Mandelbulber) and the original developer and community have, and are, doing a great job updating it. However, I like Mandelbulb3D better for reasons I'll publicly explain someday. There are two technical issues that hold back the updating of the Mandelbulb3D app, 1) Embarcadero maintains a hefty fee-based license lock on Delphi 7, which is what Mandelbulb3D was written in (over $1,000 annually to get the Delphi 7 IDE). 2) The original developer (and community) compiled some of the code for speed and performance - it looks like the library and information on that assembly compiler is lost. The compiled code would be near impossible to reverse engineer. Perhaps also, there doesn't appear to be a market for a dedicate Mandelbulb graphic generator, especially given the work of Machina Infinitum generating Mandelbulb-style graphics in Unreal Engine. Basically, it doesn't appear worth the effort to modernize the Mandelbulb3D app, or to create a new edition, in large part because the market doesn't appear to exist that would justify the effort. So, the odds of our beloved Mandelbulb3D application being re-made are slim-to-none, from what I see. But what we CAN do is drive this thing like an old reliable Junker given that the Mandelbulb3D that we know can output some amazing stuff, at times much easier than any other Mandelbulb generator in existence. It's the output that matters most! And, you know what, the Mandelbulb3D Enthusiasts that exist today don't have a whole lot of competition. Enjoy the ride while the old Junker is still with us!

      Welcome to the channel! You can assign UP TO 6 formula assignments, except for Interpolite mode, which allows only 2 (because they combine the average of two formulas). You may be not seeing your formulas due to the Ini Dirs settings. Go to Tools, Ini Dirs and make sure that the folder paths are correctly pointing to where you install MB and its sub-folders. Then, create some great Mandelbulbs!

    I've been using it on an off since it was released. But, I have now an interesting question that I hope someone can answer. Maybe it has been thought of in the past.But I am having a lot of trouble finding an answer to my question! It is this! Can a Mandelbulb formula or image be converted somehow in to a 3D printed object, especially a complex image/shape??

    • @Mandelbulb3DTutorials
      @Mandelbulb3DTutorials Місяць тому

      That's a great question. Please clarify if your objective would be a physical object such as would be produced by a '3D printer' that would make a solid plastic object. Or, does your objective output remain a digital image?

    • @glenc3249
      @glenc3249 Місяць тому

      @@Mandelbulb3DTutorials Hiya mate, it would be interesting for a 'physical object' to be produced. I don't have a 3D printer though. It was a thought I had quite a while ago after seeing the results of a render; it might have been a formula I got online somewhere then messed about with. (Putting two formulas together).. One very interesting geometric image was 'MixPinski4ex & Tetra'.... The name I gave to the render to remind me what I used. Another was Aexion C + Sierpinski. It looked like an organic shape within a geometric structure. I was just looking at your 'Ruins of Epsilon' vid. The music goes perfect with it. Have you ever considered creating your own music to go with your renders? I mean buying a reasonably cheap synthesizer and create pieces yourself?

    • @Mandelbulb3DTutorials
      @Mandelbulb3DTutorials Місяць тому

      Read up on the BTracer2 feature of the Mandelbulb3D application. That allows you to convert a Mandelbulb into a mesh. Keep your Mandelbulb simple. Using software intended for 3D printing, you should be able to import the mesh file. Now, the whole process may be time consuming and require some solid knowledge of mesh tech, but it looks good that it can be done. Scope out online info on mesh importing for 3D printing and try your hand at generating a mesh from the Mandelbulb3D app. When ready, consider posting a demo on UA-cam with your project results. Thanks for your kind words about the "Ruins of Epsilon"! Actually, the first (1917) edition of that presentation was with me using a synth. That one was loooong before I knew what I was doing making Mandelbulb fractals. I republished it with a royalty-free soundtrack simply because I liked that soundtrack. I actually have several hardware synths (and software synths) and some of my animations are with my own synth soundtrack. I use royalty-free or synths as a soundtrack as the mood strikes.

      @@Mandelbulb3DTutorials thank for your reply Patrick. That was interesting. I haven't got a 3d printer, but I do have 3dsMax ;-) that I occasionally use; the last time was importing a 3d shape into a photo of my garden with a wood effect. It resembled a huge piece of artwork after I used HDRI lighting on it. So, I imagine, somehow a Mandelbulb3d mesh could be imported ito the software and rendered as an object within a photo of a playing field for instance using HDRI lighting???? That could end up being a very interesting result. I wasn't surprised that you have some synths too (I can't get on with virtual oes) ;-). I have a Behringer Deepmind 12 and a Korg Wavestate mk2, plus a Korg PA600. But I just use UA-cam tutorials to learn how to use them, as I've never had a musical instrument lesson in my life.... apart from a recorder in my first year at secondary school 1973-4 ;-). What synths have you got Patrick?

    • @Mandelbulb3DTutorials
      @Mandelbulb3DTutorials Місяць тому

      With some knowledge of 3dsMax and some HDRI experience, you are likely close to importing a Mandelbulb mesh. Try it! Make a simple Mandelbulb using the formula that Mandelbulb opens with - "Integer Power" (to keep your Mandelbulb simple and bulb shaped). Then try exporting a mesh with BTracer2. Share your project on UA-cam. Nice set of synths! My hardware synths are Arturia MiniFreak and Hydrasynth Explorer. Below are a few of my vids using the Arturia MiniFreak. 4.30.2024 Wow... exactly what I have been looking for a couple years - a M3D guru! Can't wait to go through your many graciously made videos. I am like you described... I love M3D, but just not the time to have to monkey with the complex (and slow) application. Wish it was brought current to todays standard in applications, but never the less... I am determined to stick it out.

    • @Mandelbulb3DTutorials
      @Mandelbulb3DTutorials 5 місяців тому

      Thanks for your kind words @graphguy! I suspect that there are many persons who would like to create with MB3D, but can't get the guidance to accelerate their learning curve. It's unfortunate that MB3D didn't get enough market attention for deep documentation and tutorials, but it doesn't have a corporation behind it and it didn't get a market large enough to justify supporting it beyond a curiosity level. So, for most, MB3D is learn-by-trying by slogging through the controls to see what happens. But few are willing to invest that amount of effort into any software application, let along a purely creative one. But MB3D can do some really cool stuff if one can get past those barriers - I'm still working on those barriers. I predict, with a level of certainty, that MB3D will never be rebuilt and will, at best, receive periodic updates for minor feature enhancements. The current manager of MB3D, Andreas Maschke, has actually installed a number of features in the last 8 years or so. We are fortunate we have Andreas looking out for MB3D and keeping it available (and free). So, yes, stick with it - MB3D does reward, but we have to work at it to get results - and that may actually be MB3D's best kept secret.

    This is great! I love mandelbulb 3d concept... but to be honest the application is so 2000, that I wish a current app would come out that does not try to base it as a web app (disaster).

    • @Mandelbulb3DTutorials
      @Mandelbulb3DTutorials 5 місяців тому

      I agree. But I highly doubt that MB3D will be overhauled...ever. Last year I had a lengthy email conversion with the current manager of the MB3D application (Andreas Maschke). What came out of that conversation is a couple issues. First is that the original authors (Jesse and various persons associated with the Fractal Forum) compiled various portions of the application's source code to speed up rendering, which is a DE (Distance Estimation) approach - very old school by today's rendering standards. This "pre-compiled code" is very difficult to reverse engineer. Also, and I can attest to this, it's costly to obtain a Delphi license from Embarcardo that can compile the code back to Delphi version 7, and various third-party libraries are missing and probably no longer available. There is also the concern that the market is not large enough to justify an extensive project of rebuilding MB3D. In short, the odds are against MB3D ever being rebuilt. There was an effort to replace MB3D with the Mandelbulber project, and they did a good job. But, I think Mandelbulber didn't capture the creative depth that we can get from MB3D. MB3D is a very well designed fractal generator in many ways. For sure buggy, half-baked in certain areas, old interface and slow to render. But its creative opportunities (with over 400 formulas, 3 hybrid modes, up to 6 formula slots, control over iterations, R Bailout, etc.) cancels all that out IMO. The more experience you get with MB3D, the more creative depth you discover because, in part, the designers gave us control of the render algorithm (DE settings, iterations, R Bailout, etc.). That level of control IS the power of MB3D.

    Thank you for this playlist, I have bookmarked it for now. UA-cam seems to love to shuffle videos randomly in their playlist, so you may be able to increase the usefulness of this by manually putting them in the right order. :)

    • @Mandelbulb3DTutorials
      @Mandelbulb3DTutorials 5 місяців тому

      Thanks for your suggestion @DKSprocket. UA-cam is not constructed for contiguous subject matter such as a linear training videos like these. Indeed, UA-cam suggests various session video seemingly at random that results in viewers looking at session #29, for instance, which is way out of topic order. The motivated, however, get themselves on track to follow the sessions in the order intended. I've looked at various ways to deal with this, but I'm limited. UA-cam does, however, give the topic of Mandelbulb3D wide exposure, at no cost to viewers, so that's a huge benefit. The playlists are sortable, but that sort is related to the viewer and that sort may be lost after leaving the Playlist page. I know of no way for me to create a sort that is also available to others as I sort it. I'm aware of this limitation and have been looking into a few ways to deal with it. I did try a video-based topic list (TS2.0 Dynamic Session List here: ua-cam.com/video/LuQ6UArDF7s/v-deo.html) but that is getting a poor view count, so is prob not useful. Thanks for your suggestion!

      Thank you! Those are very kind words that I value. I started with Mandelbulb3D back in 2017 and quickly realized how frustrating it can be. Over time, as I dug into it deeper, I realized how powerful it can be. It really is an under-valued application that most can't seem to get past the basics, and easily quit. It's a fantastic software for fractal generation once you get past the basics. It's lack of documentation and lack of in-depth tutorials hurts it's prospects to be more widely used. But if we take deep dives together, we can get past the basics to create some really cool graphics that only the Mandelbulb3D masters have accomplished....so far. Stay with it, create and have fun!

    • @Mandelbulb3DTutorials
      @Mandelbulb3DTutorials 7 місяців тому

      The Keep Lights preserves (keeps) the settings of the lights, not the colors, when a COLOR preset (at the bottom of the light panel) or light settings are loaded from a file (at the very bottom of the light panel). When Keep Lights is enabled, its only benefit (and purpose) is to preserve (keep) light settings when you load a color preset or file. Keep Lights is not related to color adjustments. With that said, lighting and coloring are different functions. So, you can change coloring and lights independently of one another, although the end result is a visual combination. So, you can, in effect, change coloring without changing lighting, although "Keeps Lights" has nothing to do with that.

    Found this mandelbulb3d and checked for tutorials. There are many of these available, mostly all rather old, like the fancy time of this topic is not the most modern. Anyhow, the tutorial of Patrick (currently I am at session 10) is the best I've found so far. The whole thing is rather time intensive with over 150 clips, but really worth to watch. Thank you for your kind words @hogrYT! I believe that every person who is interested in fractal art should try their hand at Mandelbulb3D because it offers a unique opportunity in fractal art. While Mandelbulbs can be created by other means, the Mandelbulb3D application is focused on that type of fractal and has a surprisingly extensive set of tools to tap. What hurts the Mandelbulb3D application is its age, infrequent upgrades, its lack of documentation beyond cursory and its lack of in-depth tutorials. It's easy to push out a 30 minute tut. The question is, how to master the application to do much more than a couple interesting stills? My hope is that my tutorials bring Mandelbulb3D out of the shadows in terms of this type of fractal graphics. To that end, today I am starting the process of releasing to UA-cam a second tutorial series titled "Mastering Mandelbulb3D Formulas". I will also be releasing to UA-cam a video-based formula reference tool. These latest tools are a continuation to my goal of helping fractal artists everywhere.

      The Mandelbulb3D application, being of 2013 vintage does not follow the user interface conventions used these days. Today it would be common to enter "16:9". But back in those days, user interface was much less intuitive and restricted by the Delphi development environment, which is antiquated by modern day development. However, what we can do with Mandelbulb3D is still well beyond what nearly all current fractal generators can do. We just have to get used to it's way of doing things.

    Simpler way: take start position A and take lighting and coloring from main into navigator. If you that want a move to position C. You can make keyframe of posisiton A, in Navigator make small move to position C, make keyframe from Navigator,, another move and again from Navigator to Animator and finally to position C and then you have 4-5 keyframes to move from A to C.

    • @Mandelbulb3DTutorials
      @Mandelbulb3DTutorials 8 місяців тому

      Right. You are describing using the Navigator to prepare keyframes, which can be (and usually are) prepared one-after-another (contiguous) without even leaving the Navigator. As I was saying in the tutorial, I don't normally use the Insert Keyframe feature, but wanted to talk about it to help understand what it does. The Insert Keyframe feature is handy when you need to make a minor keyframe fix and have lost track of your position in the Navigator. For instance, you did your 50 keyframes, previewed the animation, and discovered that there is an animation glitch at say, keyframe 13. You could use the Insert Keyframe feature to "fix" those few keyframes without getting heavily involved with the preceding and subsequent keyframes using the Navigator. Keyframing can get tricky, so it's good to know the tools that are available. Think of the Insert Keyframe feature as a "fixing" tool, not a production tool. While some tools may not be efficient to use, knowing how to use them could save hours of work--not saving work by being efficient, rather saving work by not losing your work.

    • @Mandelbulb3DTutorials
      @Mandelbulb3DTutorials 8 місяців тому

      You want to go for the best balance between quality (DE+Raystep Multiplier) and render time. Not all MB3D scenes look good at low DE. You could have a DE of 2 and a Raystep Mult of .1 and the scene looks great. You could have a low DE and have a great deal of oversampling. So, low DE is not always your goal. With an animation, it's a balance between quality and render time. And don't forget that MB3D supports network rendering, allowing multiple PC to crank out an animation. I routinely have 3 high-end PCs rendering, which throws 60 cores at the job.

      You're welcome. I've found that shadows are important to the "feel" of the scene - shadows hide while light reveals. We want to leave something to the imagination of the viewer as in "what's in that space?". The fog controls accomplish much the same as shadows in terms of hiding parts of the scene. Fog is handy when animating along the Z axis (moving toward the distance) because the fog can hide from the viewer the destination as in "where am I going?". We want the viewer to "ask questions", which is a large part of the goal of engagement. Have fun with it all.

    • @Mandelbulb3DTutorials

      Yes, that color cycling feature is usually an animation killer because the colors cycle across the images between key frames. This has the effect of colors being unstable (flickering) as the animation moves from image to image. It’s worse if animating along the Z axis (coloring has a relationship to the Z. Axis). You also need to be careful with the mapping feature which might have the same effect. Maps with color changes on the Y (up and down) axis are fine as long as you don’t animate along the Y axis, which is hard to avoid. Same concept for maps with color changes on the X axis. Color Cycling and maps are fine for stills, but play havoc on animations. Stills are easy with MB3D. Animations are the challenge. Learn MB3D animation and stills are a walk in the park.

  • @Strothy2
    @Strothy2 9 місяців тому

    Now comes the trial and error part; I found that just going for a few zooms, saving the parameters if I like it, and going iterative from there is my workflow.

    • @Mandelbulb3DTutorials
      @Mandelbulb3DTutorials 9 місяців тому

      Fractal art is the process of discovery. We discover fractal patterns that appeal to us, then polish them for final presentation. It's the act of discovery that is the most fun. We adjust, tweak, discard and start over until a pattern comes into view that we want to share. MB3D is especially prime for experimentation because of it many formula variations and combinations along with many formula parameters accessible for change. And there is lighting, mapping, heightfields, animation and more to add to the journey of discovery. MB3D is a tool for graphical discovery.

      Thanks! This is the result of several years of using MB3D for complex animations, backed by a lifetime as a photographer and a professional software developer for 40 years. I appreciate what MB3D can do and have found ways to "survive" its shortcomings and fill in the knowledge gaps by sheer trial-and-error. MB3D is an incomplete software application that would have been great had it continued to be expanded after about 2013. But, it remains very good at what it does as long as you know how to work around its flaws. I got to a point where I wanted to help other fractal artists get value from MB3D as I have. I'm happy this tutorial series is helpful.

  • @Strothy2
    @Strothy2 9 місяців тому

    I always thought the FOV value would operate in the exact opposite way than you explained it, again learned something :)

    • @Mandelbulb3DTutorials
      @Mandelbulb3DTutorials 9 місяців тому

      The behavior of the MB3D FOV or "Field of View" is very close the FOV in photography where the "field" can be thought of as the scene view distance top-to-bottom (notice the "y" after FOV). With MB3D the wider the "field" (higher value) the more the visual height, which simulates photography lens zooming. MB3D simulates a camera lens behavior, although not accurately and we normally think of FOV in photography as horizontal. The concept is the same, just a depends of how you look at it (y or x axis). And the MB3D doesn't seem linear, so the FOV value should only be used creatively. You can get some crazy effects with a large FOVy value. Try FOVy in conjunction with different "camera" settings.

    • @ELEKTROGOWK
      @ELEKTROGOWK 8 місяців тому

      It should be the other way around. A higher focal lenght results in a smaller FOV

    • @Mandelbulb3DTutorials
      @Mandelbulb3DTutorials 8 місяців тому

      The most authoritative documentation that exists for the Mandelbulb3D application (github.com/thargor6/mb3d) doesn't explain the FOVy property. In addition, the MB3D authors did not assign a popup tooltip to the FOVy entry to help explain it. All we can do is consider the FOVy's actual behavior at the interface level of the application. In review of behavior: If we increase the MB3D FOVy value in the MB3D Navigator, we widen the field of view. A FOVy of 90 is wider than a FOVy of 20, for instance. With MB3D, a FOVy of 20 has the effect of zooming in relative to a FOVy of 90. In photography, when we increase the millimeter value of an optical lens, the field of view decreases. This is illustrated here: www.nikonians.org/reviews/fov-tables. So, the field of view for a lens set to 16mm is wider than a lens set to 300mm, for example. In summary: MB3D: Changing the FOVy value from 20 to 90 INCREASES the field (width) of view. Photography: Changing the lens value from 16mm to 300mm DECREASES the field (width) of view. As such, the MB3D FOVy behaves opposite of photography lens FOV. And that's true for the ANGLE of view where the angle INCREASES from a MB3D FOV change of 20 to 90 where a lens mm change from 16 to 300 DECREASES the angle of view. We should also keep in mind that the MB3D FOVy is expressed in terms of height, not width as suggested by the label "FOVy". The principle of angle change is the same, just in a vertical orientation when inspected closely. Also, there is no indication at the MB3D interface level of "focal length", so we can't be sure (without a deep code inspection) how the concept of "focal length" is involved with the FOV calculation. A deep code review would be interesting, but it's not clear what gain would be had with respect to the creative use of MB3D's FOV the way it is. MB3D does have a Depth of Field function (see Post Processing) which does consider focal length, but that seems separate from the FOV function, at least in terms of the application's interface. We can't know for sure what the MB3D authors were thinking when they designed the FOVy function. It's not likely they didn't understand the principle of Field of View. It's more likely they were not thinking in terms of photography lenses, but perhaps in terms of angles, but not strictly optical angles. Or perhaps they were thinking of another technology that utilizes optical principles. It's also possible they got the FOV behavior wrong and it was never fixed after the primary developer (Jesse) quit the project. MB3D is an unpolished software application and that's not likely to ever change. All we can do, as it pertains to MB3D, is use the FOVy adjustment creatively.

      Thanks! Yes, that "smart zoom" is troublesome if you don't understand its behavior. It can be extremely helpful when animating because it helps keep the camera from diving into the fractal, but it can also fight you, as you noted. Don't be afraid to take manual control of the Zoom as needed. You also need to watch out for the Far Plane changing its value, which will destroy your animation quickly. Save often! The Zoom and Far Plane seem to not have been fine-tuned during development. And they play a minor role when creating stills, so likely escaped close attention by the original developers. Keep creating!

    This is a nice series I just started watching, you can also get "out" the fractal by clicking the reset button in the position tab of the main render window, and just render it again. That way you don't have to change the scale of the fractal right away. If you covered that in another video please forgive me but I find it a good way to get my bearings when getting lost in a fractal.

      Thank you for taking the time to comment! If you are referring to the reset button in the upper corner of the formulas tab, that button instantly resets ALL of the formulas. If you are referring to the reset button within the "Position" panel of the Main form, that button immediately returns the camera position to it's zero/zero/zero coordinates, in terms of x/y/z. There is no "undo" for either reset functions. In the tutorial session I was referring to getting "out" of the fractal in terms of navigation where the camera has become embedded into the fractal object and the creator is lost. In that case, recalling the parameters with the "Parameters" button on the Navigation form is the best non-destructive way to recover. I very much appreciate your interest in my tutorial series - there will be many more sessions posted as they are made ready for publication.
