Syntropic Veggie Production Update: transitioning from winter to summer and fertiliser experiment
It's been a while since I've shared about our syntropic veggie production. It has actually been a while since I spend much time with our veggies, Cindy has been doing most of the watering and tending/harvesting jobs while I am working in other areas of the farm.
While spreading some bio fertiliser and microbial inoculants, I've stopped and enjoyed the veggies for a while and felt inspired to share.
We are now transitioning into summer veggies and have made some mixed season beds, which are doing great, but we can see that the winter ones are struggling a bit... We've had a very warm winter actually!!
Also did a fertiliser experiment and the result was quite clear!
I hope you find that useful...

7 Months Syntropic System update ... the frost did hit us in the end!
Переглядів 172Місяць тому
The timing of our management in the syntropic system is paramount, it can literally make or brake/break our food-forest. I've been monitoring closely the system and made a few interventions in winter, as plants were showing me that they could grow, if managed. I did go ahead with the management, but always with the "fear" that the frost could come. When I thought we were safe... The frost came!...
Doing some earthworks for the new Syntropic market garden and grain production area
Переглядів 145Місяць тому
Over the years it became clear to me that vegetables and food-forest are great partners for a short time - during the establishment phase. After that, the management of the syntropic system becomes disjointed, with the veggies wanting to move in one direction while the emerging forest prefer another direction. For that reason we've decided to create a veggie and grain production area. A prime p...
Managing a Syntropic System in Mid-Winter: removing senescence and growing earlier!!
Переглядів 1,1 тис.2 місяці тому
Management of our syntropic agroforestry systems is all about timing an volume. That is, we need to intervene when there will be a response from the system, there is no point in managing when things are not growing. At the same time, we need to understand how much volume can we reduce when we intervene, if too little, we will need to get back too soon, if too much, the system may stagnate and t...
How to Manage a Syntropic Organism Based in Reality - not guruship, textbooks or calendars!
Переглядів 3712 місяці тому
Syntropic Agroforestry systems are, in my understanding, extremely individualised, not only the design and management must suit the human being behind the forest, but its management must be based on its reality and not on textbooks, guruships or calendar. If we learn to observe, listen and trust our agroforests, then we are in good hands to make appropriately timed management decisions. We, as ...
4.5 Months Old Syntropic System - keeping the balance through winter
Переглядів 2823 місяці тому
While it seems that the weather is playing tricks with us, we need to keep our syntropic system in growth mode. Although it is not time to open up and excite things, we also cannot let it go flat and stagnant, therefore it was time to prune the tithonia, crotalaria, jack and castor beans. We also cut the hair of the grass, just to stop its seeding process and hopefully encourage it to put on so...
Cindy's Reflections on Managing Our Syntropic System
Переглядів 993 місяці тому
An important part of our journey is to make our agroforestry system our reflection, in so doing we create not only a productive and regenerative space, but also a place that we love spending time in. Here is Cindy's reflection of how she enjoys managing the syntropic system, what steps she goes through and what she learns along the way. www.syntropicgardener.com
The different veggie cycles in our syntropic system
Переглядів 3463 місяці тому
After 3 months adding veggie beds in our syntropic system, we are now in a position where are life-cycles are represented, from seed harvesting, to seed formation and flowering processes, into beautiful broccoli and cauliflower heads (the biggest and yummies we've even grown), passing by juice lettuces, rockets, spinach and strawberries, to end end in radishes and the future crops just establis...
Protecting our Syntropic System from Wild Boar - Electric Fence to the rescue
Переглядів 603 місяці тому
It's been a busy couple of weeks since the wild boars pass through our syntropic system. They did not do any damage onto the perennial rows, but did have a good dig around our veggie beds within the system. Our solution - 18,000 volts!! Yes, we had no option but to fence our syntropic system. Plenty of work, but I've also learnt a lot about setting up electric fence for animal control... Hope y...
Managing Placenta 1 in our Syntropic System
Переглядів 2843 місяці тому
Placenta 1 plants play a vital role in the establishment of our Syntropic systems. They play the pivotal function of rushing off the ground and establishing conditions after our significant disturbances with soil preparation and amendments. They start the metabolisation process of the nutrients we've added, but more importantly, they feed the microbiology that got excited with our intervention....
Harvesting and Managing the Veggies in our Syntropic System
Переглядів 764 місяці тому
We've had a bumper harvests the last couple of weeks, the veggie beds in our syntropic system are pumping, so many broccoli, cauliflower, kale peas, beetroots, radish, bok-choy, lettuce, beans, rocket, spring onion, cucumbers, tomato and even a strawberry... While some beds are pumping, others a clearly in a declining state...Probably time to do a re-set on them and bring some fresh energy, or ...
3 Months Old Syntropic System - Blooming and Producing!!
Переглядів 1004 місяці тому
Our Syntropic system has turn 3 months old... Its looking healthy and resilient, all beds are stable and full of life, so much so that we are now moving into a full bloom!! Unfortunately, in Syntropic Agroforestry, not sure if intentionally or not, there is a war on flowers. The reason for that is when plants start their flowering process, their photosynthetic capacity gets reduced significantl...
Experimenting in The Syntropic Organism - adding another veggie bed...

Here we go, it's time to play and engage in the syntropic system... Here we add, yet another bed, and as usual we take it as it comes, we create based on the seedlings we've got and the conditions of the system. The better we learn to read how our systems are evolving, the more we can put things into synchronicity!! Just love it...and strawberries!! www.syntropicgardener.com
Broccoli in Abundance in the Syntropic System
Переглядів 574 місяці тому
The inclusion of veggies in the system play a vital role in our syntropic systems, as they not only bring a reward to our efforts, but also to bring human attention into the longer sucessional plants. Our observation for the success and timely management of the system is paramount, and nothing better to realise that management is welcomed when we go in to check on the tomatoes, broccoli, caulif...
Managing Corn in the Syntropic System - Regeneration over Production...

It is great to bring short life cycle crops into our systems, as they play a vital role not only in nursing future trees, but more importantly, to bring the human element into the system. However, at times they challenge us in making good decision... and we must be able to make the hard decision of removing it from the system, if they are no longer supporting and in sync with the bigger organis...

recently i am experimenting with comfrey planted in a straight line right beside my treeline for the ease of managment and to repress invasive grasses. I am seeing your pigeon pea and sunhemp, mexican sunflower mixed with your tree crops, Do you see vitality in a system that has the biomass producers right at the edge on both sides of the treelines to make managment easier? or do you think there would not be enough positive interaction between different plant species. Curious to your take on this ! Greetings from Portugal

great! super nice to see it develop like this. i think i also noticed cana edulis?! correct. I have them growing here aswell..do you have them for the harvest of the bulbs...or let's say would you harvest them for consumption or are they just there for your biomass production?

Head forming brassica and tomato need a lot of nutrients. That's maybe why they don't do so well . Other rows you have pea and been.

Hi Vic, hi Cindy. That new(ish) system looks great. I did a course with you a few years back and have been working to retrofit areas here. It’s slow because of our cold, frosty winters and having to experiment a lot to find good support species but it’s an enjoyable journey.
