The so called human experiment was, for many decades, been an experiment in which the people at large were just used as electoral pawns.

Interesting that a man who does not live in this country defines Foreign Policy success as one which is defined by a country's growth rate and maintenance of a pluralistic democracy. No Sirji. The growth rate is not as important as the building up of self-sufficiency in the population and reducing its dependence on others, as well as the capability of Government to fulfill its commitment to reduce poverty and create more opportunities for people to deal with their problems by themselves. Those who live here can clearly see that the Democracy that we have is far more participative and ebullient than it was ever before. As to the comment on the constitutional aspect. This is laughable, considering that the party on whose behalf this Mehta speaks has modified the constitution at the the same pace that a family business would take decisions, while the incumbent Government has been far more circumspect in this matter. We now see a Government that tries to stick to the Constitution far more than the family government did.

We are at a time when Foreign Policy has to be built on recent history and continue to be added to and modified as we go along. No more do governments have the luxury of taking multiple decades to make and change their foreign policy thinking.

Having a strategy means to have decided plan and defined alternatives, not to just have more alternatives. The defence budget has reduced because the domestic supplies have been assessed and increased and that the preferences, where possible, are for Indian alternatives.
