hellor everyone!
sorry it has been a long time - i am still the same except apparently orange now.
this video is givin ya some advice on how to make your articles 112% more fun than they currently are. 3 years can feel like a long time, but that doesn't mean it should be a sad time!
also, although a lot of us are in the articles boat, it doesn't mean that our experience is the same - so if you've got some tidbits/advice to add, please lemme know in the comments!
lots of love to all of you for watching my videos even though they are so nerdy. xxxx
(thank you to jed for filming)

Inter-company/ Intra-group transactions!
My articles were not bad, but it could never be the best 3 years of my life because you earn much more money after completing your articles lol so money wise, you'll obviously enjoy life much more after articles 😅 But from that perspective you'll learn how to save money well which is also awesome! You will miss the vibe and all your friends from articles so just enjoy it ❤
Haha, completely agreed from a financial perspective. 😅 and absolutely, I think it'll be rare to experience a work environment where you are surrounded by so many people your age, so definitely a time to savour. 😇
@@accountingwithmaddy I guess that's a really great advantage we enjoyed in this profession when we experienced that sort of work environment with all our colleagues 💯 It's the one thing I miss the most from my days of articles, but the money is much better now so it evens out 😅 Also, this is an awesome clip, spot on 💯
This was such a great video! Keep up the good work ❤
Hy used your videos in third year, cta am still here catching up, thanks a mil 😊
Good luck with CTA, I’m sure you’ll crush it!
I love your videos so much 😂 always insightful and chilled and relaxing......looking forward to your APC video
awww yay, this makes me so happy to hear!
Another banger! Nice studio space you've got goin there!
thanks will - thought it might be time that my teeny apartment makes an appearance!
Hi Maddy, I am an accounting student and I was wondering if it would be possible for you to share your email, I had a few questions I wanted to ask you?
hi petrina! Happy to answer queries in the comments. 😇
@@accountingwithmaddy Ok, great. I struggle to answer discuss type questions in Financial accounting. I understand what is required however I don't know how to structure my answer. Do you perhaps have an approach that you used to answer such questions? Also are you willing to accept video suggestions?
@@petrinaabraham6078 So with discussion questions (specifically relating to Financial Reporting), the rule of thumb is always Principle and Application. For example, if you are given a Revenue question, and it deals with a principal vs agent principle (as discussed in IFRS 15), then you would structure your answer by first stating what IFRS 15 says around the principal/agent situation. You would say something like "This situation is implicit of a Principal vs Agent scenario as described in IFRS 15, where it would need to be identified whether the seller in this context has control over the goods transferred..." (basically hitting all of the buzzwords required by the IFRS 15 principle). Then you need to APPLY your particular scenario to the underlying principle (in this case the IFRS 15 principal vs agent principle). You could say "In this scenario, the entity in question demonstrates control over the good because of XYZ reason..." and then apply all of the facts of the scenario that address each of the principles stated above. The P + A rule works every time (and for every subject) and it also helps clarify to you what your argument is, so it doesn't get all muddled. I hope this helps!
@@accountingwithmaddy This is very helpful thank you.
Very helpful
Let’s gooooo 🎉
thanks for filming, mister!
This was so well done! Finally understand this.
Yaaay, I'm so glad! 🥹
can you make videos on how you tackled auditing, especially IT audit, substantive procedures
Thank you for the video God bless you ✓
Hi there! Can I buy your IFRS books?
Thank you for this excellent video Maddy, so clear and logical 🙂
Hi there, one question i have is would you suggest completing CTA before articles or to complete them both at the same time? Each persons situation is unique but i windered if you had any wisdom to share there Thanks
Hey! I can't speak on behalf of anyone who has completed CTA during articles, I just know that in my experience, CTA in itself is extremely challenging. I was working as a part-time bookkeeper during CTA to earn additional income, and doing both at the same time was an insaaane amount of work, and I struggled to manage the workload. However, looking back, I'm glad I did CTA before starting articles because it gave me that additional time to mature a bit and have a proper academic understanding of audit before I started auditing other companies. Also, having worked whilst studying helped me have a practical understanding of the companies I audit. Doing articles and CTA at the same time does have its benefits - earning income while you study, finishing earlier etc. but I do know that people often struggle to find firms that will take trainees who have not yet got their CTA, with their reasoning being that they want trainees to know full IFRS, tax law, audit etc. so that they can easily apply theory on the job, without having to go through the process of learning it. So I think it really depends on how well you can manage your time, but I would say, if you are financially able to study your CTA first and then do articles, I would do that. I have found it so important to have a holistic theoretical understanding in my job, so I wouldn't want to rush the studying bit. I hope that helps, and good luck on your accounting journey! 🧚🏼♀
@@accountingwithmaddy Thank you very much for the detailed response. I've definitely seen most people suggesting CTA first before articles. The main one that spoke to starting articles as soon as a person enters the CA stream was PwC (Who are my first prize article choice) who I asked the same question to but it can be difficult knowing whether they are speaking genuinely or too much from the corporate perspective I do appreciate your experience that you shared
Love your videos. I wanted to ask if there’s a way I can contact you to please get personal advice on my accounting journey🙈
Thank you... during the year... how best can l study for the technicals. I didnt do cta and passed acca like ages go in 2020. I dont remember any standard now. And writing in December
Hey elisheba! I think there are two ways to prepare yourself for the technical aspects. Firstly, I would go through each standard - so literally IFRS 1, 2 ... IAS 36 etc. and make a mindmap/summary page of each, making sure that you're familiarising yourself with the key concepts. I love drawing mindmaps because it's a fun way of making a lot of information seem easier to engage with. Secondly, once you're comfortable that you know what each Standard is talking about, past papers are the BEST way to engage with the material. Especially if it is a Standard that you are not so comfortable with. E.g. IFRS 15, 16 and 17 are newer Standards, so given that you most likely would not have studied them in ACCA, I would try find some SAICA past papers that cover those Standards so that you're fully prepped. I hope that helps, and best of luck for December! <3

Great video and tips!
Thanks so much!
Thank you so much for this😊❤
You are so welcome! <3
Thank you for this video Maddy! I have recently signed with one of the big 4 (and I may have done a little bit of digging to figure out which one relates to your experience😜😁) - and I am definitely happy with the choice I have made😇. My friends have discouraged me from going into audit specifically because of the "little pay". My response to them was that, I am not trying to become a CA because I want money - I'd like to believe there are maaany ways to make money without going through the turmoil of the CA(SA) route. Also, Auditing is my favorite module, so I am a little excited to actually go into audit. Yes, it won't be what I expect it to be, but I am willing to embrace the experience because it will the humble beginnings of a life long career as a CA(SA). I am so sorry about your brother - I pray you continue to heal from the loss. ❤❤❤Thank you once again for sharing and dispelling the myths
Hi Bulelwa! Yay, I’m so happy you signed with a company you like! I totally agree with you - no-one chooses doing auditing articles because they want to make money. I’ve learnt soooo much more than my colleagues who went to work cushier jobs because I’ve been placed on hectic clients, worked insane overtime and have had a more holistic experience that will ultimately make me a better CA! 👩💼 I’m so glad you’re excited about doing your articles - it really is such an incredibly rewarding experience if you allow it to be. 🩷
Thank you for this! 😭 watched this in the 5th week of my CTA feeling extremely anxious & overwhelmed. Thanks for the tips, they are so helpful!
You are SO welcome! Just take things day by day - don’t let those lecturers overwhelm you! You’ve GOT this. 🩷
