Weer een leuke video, zeker gezien de korte tijd spreek je al beter Nederlands dan menig iemand die hier al veel langer is. Het Afrikaans kon ik prima verstaan, succes!

Nou, wat dacht je ervan om de tijd te nemen om te bedenken wat je wilt zeggen en dan vlot te proberen spreken? Een moedertaalspreker praat nu eenmaal snel. Als je eerst probeert de zin in je hoofd op te bouwen voordat je het zegt, geef je ze niet de kans om het voor jou in te vullen en over te nemen. En ik vind het leuk om je Nederlands te horen praten... net soos in Afrikaans, altyd lekker. Goed bezig. (En geen moedertaalspreker heeft de taal geleerd met regeltjes over grammatica, helaas zijn veel 'lesmethodes' heel erg gericht op dit soort dingen.)

Hoi, Marté. Ik had al eerder wat video's van jou gezien, maar kwam vandaag jouw kanaal weer tegen. Ik moet zeggen dat jouw Nederlands behoorlijk goed klinkt. Natuurlijk lijkt het Afrikaans op papier erg op het Nederlands, maar uitspraak verschilt nogal. Uiteraard helpt die taalverwantschap. Op zich zou het helpen als jullie thuis ook zoveel mogelijk Nederlands met elkaar zouden spreken. Mijn respect voor dat jullie een Iron Man gaan doen.. Zelf ben ik destijds nooit verder dan een Marathon (2x) gekomen, dus ik weet hoe hard je voor zoiets moet trainen. Dat was ook de reden dat ik met Marathons gestopt ben 140km en meer per week kostte gewoon te veel tijd. Petje af dat jullie die uitdaging aangaan. En Oostenrijk is met de trein goed bereikbaar, dus dat zal niet al te veel problemen geven.

In older Dutch, "verschoon mij" means the same thing, afaik even in the 19th century(Eline Vere and all that). It is simply terribly old fashioned. Comparable phrases still pop up here and there in Dutch (like verschoningsrecht in a court session, which is the right not to testify e.g. against a relative, i.e. you are excused from testifying)

I've known expats that could touch that level after _years_ in the Netherlands following lessons. Keep it up and it will be fine 🙂 It is actually not that bad a pronunciation, you probably sound better than you think, since there is dialectal variety within the Netherlands/Belgium too. I would say the core problem is the speed, just a little faster, (but I understand that is deliberate) and kind of hitting the stride/melody of the language and it would be quite close. Watch the long A, that is definitely different in Dutch vs Afrikaans, and you still say Ek in Dutch part (rather than Ik). But all that is probably only a matter of time.....

Gewoon spreken. Het maakt niet uit als je fouten maakt, dat doen we allemaal.

Respect, iedereen die Nederlands leert heeft het er lastig mee. Meng je onder de mensen en gewoon proberen te spreken. Als zeeuw versta ik verrassend genoeg het zuid-afrikaans ook nog redelijk goed. Succes, 💪👍

Do you think being an Afrikaans speaker helps with your learning Dutch, since the languages are so similar? Or do you think it makes it more difficult, because as you said, the languages are really close and you really have to focus on not transitioning into Afrikaans?

Belgium (Flanders) and the Netherlands both speak Dutch. But even there are some differences that can be awkward. If you say in Dutch "Ik ga even poepen" that is a quite vulgar way of saying that you go defecate. But in Belgium, when you say "ik ga even poepen" it means you're going to have sex.

Prima toch. Lekker bezig hoor. Andersom zou het hetzelfde zijn. Ik kan Afrikaans redelijk verstaan en lezen, maar om het zelf te spreken is een heel ander verhaal.

Jouw Nederlands is heel erg goed. Ik snap wel dat het moeilijk is om geen Afrikaans te spreken. Mijn tandarts is ook Zuid-Afrikaanse en als ik daar ben spreekt zij Afrikaans en ik Nederlands en dat werkt ook prima.

Mijn beste vriend is Afrikaans. Ik ken hem al sinds onze basisschool tijd. Nu begrijp ik pas waarom hij sommige dingen uitsprak zoals hij altijd deed. Die "platte A", afsluiten met "nie" en "VOETSEK!" haha <3 Zuid Afrikaners!

Omdat de twee talen zo dicht bij elkaar staan is ¨kruisbestuiving" moeilijk te voorkomen. Tevens zijn daar de valkuilen van verschoven betekenissen zoals ¨ek verstaan nie¨ tegenover ¨ik begrijp je niet¨, de Nederlander gaat harder en duidelijker spreken in plaats van beter uitleggen. Ga gewoon door en geniet van de taalreis.

Het Nederlands spreken na 2 weken les is toch prima, het is een moeilijke taal om te leren maar "oefening baart kunst" zeggen wij, veel suc6. Groetjes

Ik kan me herinneren hoe een zuidafrikaan die een tijdje in Nederland was het makkelijker vond om het lokale dialect (westfries) te verstaan dan ABN.

Werkwoordsvervoegingen zijn lastig, en als ik het goed zag was je huiswerk wederkerende werkwoorden, veel oefenen is de beste methode om dingen te onthouden. (Polyglot here, six languages, comprehensive reading 20+ if we don't count old and middle languages. [for those who do not get that, say Old English, Middle German etc.])

I am so sorry you had a death in your family! It must be very hard not being able to be there with your family during that time. I am impressed by your video editing skills! And you are a busy attorney while you make time for this! Absolutely amazing. I have also been here for 4 months. I am closer to family here than I was in SA. I've seen my sis 2x! She lives in the UK. Parents have passed. I have other family who also emigrated to other countries. I left little in SA regarding family, yet a few good friends. Regarding the "infiltrating" the dutch... I think be careful of thinking that the Dutch are a certain way. We've made good Dutch friends, and it came forth by being really open-minded and vulnerable. It came by me telling them I'm so sorry I seem so strange I realise I must look quite stupid and then I explained I just arrived (back then I was here for 1 month only). The result of this was us being invited for tea. And I got to learn how the Dutch drink tea! 😂 It left a very big impression on me. I drink my tea differently now. So just ... Think less of it as infiltrating the Dutch and more of just being transparent and having things flow from there. Speaking as much Dutch as possible! I love the Netherlands. It is more my home than South Africa was. I recently got diagnosed with cancer here, also. I've been in such situations that I really needed the very best to fall back on. It is through being in such a situation and yet to see how lucky you are to be here that it kicks in. I'm sure it is different for everybody, but I saw in this short time being in a difficult position just how much being here has counted in my favour. I've had to communicate in Dutch in so many and frequent ways and settings and due to the need to rise above I believe it has actually benefitted me. My oncology surgeon wrote in my medical file that I also speak good Dutch😂 If you're backed into a corner and determined to come out on top then it speeds up your learning, I guess. Ik ben dol op Nederland. Ik heb alleen maar thuisgekomen. Dat is hoe ik me voelt over Nederland! Oh I wanted to mention you can ask your huisarts to test your Vitamin D levels if this is a big concern for you. They will help you and might even refer you to a dietician or psychologist if you are having a battle to get your levels normal. My doctor tested my levels and thankfully it was normal. My iron levels did drop though which could either be due to eating less meat here or perhaps due to the cancer as I am anemic now, but my medical team is on top of it.

Ik zou zeggen dat je in het begin een soort hybride Nederlands-Afrikaans kunt spreken en dat je geleidelijk steeds meer Nederlands gaat spreken. Voor mij klinkt Afrikaans al bijna als Nederlands. Ik moet alleen wat geconcentreerder luisteren. Maar als je Afrikaans met een Nederlandse klank zou uitspreken, is het heel goed te verstaan.

It's interesting, on one hand you'd expect learning Dutch would be much easier for someone from South Africa then to lets say someone from Portugal, but on the other hand as you mentioned the moment you have to speak Dutch, you will revert back to Afrikaans. Because them being similar it's easier to get back to Afrikaans, when it would make no sense at all to speak Portuguese when you actually want to speak Dutch. Still a good job after only 2 weeks!

I really hope it'll stay like that, because of being Dutch and having lived my whole life here, todays Netherlands isn't anymore as it used to be. But for you coming from South Africa I can imaginaire it's a huge difference, for instantie the feeling of walging alinea in a park. I rally hope both of you are gonna like it overhere.
