This video examines the severe decline of U.S. grasslands, causing significant biodiversity loss. It highlights the variety of Southeast grassland ecosystems, from coastal dunes to mountaintops, many of which have shrunk by up to 99% over 500 years. My great Uncle Charles was the only pharmacist in Grundy for a very long time. I’ve always had a kinship with it. Most of my family are from Russell county though which isn’t that far from there. I now reside in Abingdon Va. Thank you for covering our area looking forward to more
I was born in Dickenson County over 74 years ago. My Dad was a coal miner, and we moved often to where he could find work. I was born in West Dante in a little house on the hill behind Phillips Store. It was nice to watch this episode because it's about my home. Though I left there in 1969, I still love the area, and I live in Florida now and don't make it up that way often. Many of you may know my brother Ken, he is the mayor of St. Paul, VA. I love this series. The productions are top-notch. Thank you!
better Health care is needed as Ballard has a lock on this area and no one is happy with it but other then that it is nice here
Haysi is my hometown. Lived and went to school there.
Thanks for coming to Dickenson County aka #VAsBaby to feature our wonderful people and small towns! I left here after college but soon returned and built my life here-7th generation to do so. No place like it.
I wasn't sure if PBS was still doing this series on SWVA coal towns. To see a new video hit was a real surprise. One of the best series PBS has every done. Josh the narrator from Mountain Roots is amazing. Nobody does it better. The one negative thing i will say is that this Buchanan County Industrial development association masks itself as doing good for the commmunity but what they don't tell you is that by bringing all these services into that small rural community, you are going to change it in ways that are not all positive. The reason that county is so beautiful is because there aren't any industrial parks and regional airports. All that pitch on tourism only destroys the county they are trying to save. I'm against any mass development of that nature.
Very beautiful little town I just love it
Rather hear you that Chris Stapleton any day!
We ❤ Bristol!
Go Blackbird and Bristol 🎉
You should also do a spotlight on Russell county! You should check out the old governors mansion in elk garden!
Unfortunately the tree fell down in a recent storm
Thank you for this... Well done and I found myself getting a bit emotional throughout.
We're so glad the video resonated with you!
And a big shout out to Ridgway for cleaning up the Clarion River. Clear Creek and Cooks Forest along the Clarion River is thriving because of the clean River. Just a beautiful river! And don't forget to eat at the Hulton Hilton along the Clarion River, lol No worries come as you are, no suit or tux needed.
The Clarion River is a treasure for sure!
greg and bear, lol
Good job
We have been going to my buddy’s camp for the last 10 years for our golf trip. My favorite place to go. We play a few courses including treasure lake. We visit Straub brewery and fish. No cell service in most spots it’s so relaxing. Right by medix run I love it there
I love Ridgeway one of the best small towns in the area
It’s my favorite place in the world I hope to retire there some day, I take at least 10 rides up a year
Thank you so much to PBS Appalachia Virginia and the good people of Ridgway representing our hometown so well in this broadcast. Big family from Brooklyn NY came to town in 1969 and the town has been to us all as described in this production. Thank you friends and neighbors for being a great hometown!
I wish I had a dancing partner
Yes I think Taz is nice, but please tell me where you can get breakfast on a Sunday morning. And please don’t say “Hardee’s.
I discovered Benezette and elk country in the early 1990's. Long before that &^%$#@( visitor's center was built or even thought of. You could roam the Saddle and Gray Hill freely. You could photograph elk, with caution, from 60 yards away. I fell in love with the area and visited to hike and camp for the next 15 years. Fast forward to 2006. Now it is overrun by loud obnoxious people with no regard for property or wildlife. They stand puffing on a cigarette, yelling back and forth to one another and wonder why they haven't seen any elk. When they finish their smoke, they flick the filtered butt on the ground. One that may biodegrade in 20 or 30 years. I still visit the Moshannon and Elk State forests, but I seldom go into town and I sure don't patronize the Visitor's Center. If I see elk down below the Quehanna Highway, that's great. If I don't, so be it. At least I'm not in a traffic jamb on 555 or listening to people scream back and forth at one another who think they've visited a petting zoo.
Thanks for sharing your experience. It’s definitely a different time now.
PA elk herd isn’t the largest E of the Mississippi River. KY is well over 10K elk and still growing into TN, WV and probably into NC mountains now.
I bet its liberal central there. No thanks.
Don't worry - Elk county is very red.
I'm not so sure about that accusation of "Liberal Central." Investigate for yourself... You might be surprised.
You are very wrong, though honestly any sign of government is pretty far away. Not everything has to be political. Go enjoy nature. The elk don’t care who you vote for.
I saw a transgendered elk there once. That’s all I had to see to say no thanks.
It sounds like it'd be good for you to get out of your bubble.
I own a cabin a few miles from Benezette in the village of Grant. I hunt, fish and enjoy being outside in this area monthly. I know the forests and creeks nestled in eastern Elk and southern Cameron Counties better than my resident neighborhood in the South Hills of Pittsburgh. When I am not in north-central Pennsylvania, I am thinking when I will be there again. My heart lies in the Pennsylvania Wilds. I also personally know several of the people interviewed in this short film. These are wonderful people that have a passion for not only this region but sharing it with visitors, too. Visitors are welcome to enjoy, conserve, love and protect these public lands. Go for a hike. Do some fishing. Hunt. Enjoy a camp fire. Swim or tube in the Bennett Branch of the Sinnemahoning Creek. Follow the rules and respect our wilderness, waterways and wildlife. Protect it and leave it as you found it. Thank you for presenting this special region beautifully in this documentary. I appreciate this effort. Very well done.
It sounds like you really have a connection to this special place - thanks for sharing!
I have been there many times. The first few times I did not see elk but still enjoyed it. A local gave me a tip to find the elk and I did. I found a herd and the herd seemed to follow me all day. Great place to visit.
It sounds like you had a fantastic time! The elk in Benezette are truly remarkable.
I have lived here in central PA my entire life. From Benezette, Renovo/Kettle Creek, Coudersport, Pike Creek. Lots of cools small towns all over the place. My favorite Forests to hike in PA are Loyalsock SF, Worlds End SP, Pine Creek Gorge, Bald Eagle SF & SP, Austin Dam memorial park, Elk Forest. List goes on. PA has some amazing hidden gems and waterfalls all over the place
We definitely agree!
Worlds end is an amazing park love taking weekend trips there
We. Went there in 1979 after our honeymoon. Our friends were living there. Very good time.
The narrative/commentary is outstanding. Really lit some emotion of my own longing. I live in Tyrone, PA and have visited on occasion, but this spurs a more in-depth view. God bless and keep up the great content.
Thanks so much! Glad the video resonated with you.
I grew up about ten miles from Benezette. I've been there a number of times since moving to Virginia Beach and it never fails to lift my spirits, There's nothing like seeing an elk to make you stop and appreciate what mother nature has to offer. This was a very nice documentary and I even learned a few things I didn't know.
Thank you so much. We're glad you liked it.
We go there at least once a year. Heading there for the week of Christmas this year.
My wife and I bought property in Benezette in 2004 to use as a hunting camp. But after that we fell in love with the area and the people and decided to make it our permanent home. And we did not make a mistake. We built a new cabin in 2011 and moved here permanently in 2016. And could not be happier. God bless and thank you for showing our area in such a great way.
Glad you're enjoying it! Benezette is a very special place.
@PBSAppalachia Yes, it is. 🙂
I take a ride every summer from my hometown Clearfield down 879 through Frenchville and Karthaus to Benezette. This is a relaxing beautiful drive the forest is thicker and different, it's great seeing the wild life along the way particularly the Elk. This is a great video on a small beautiful town.
He is correct about getting out and making memories with your family
Great video! Beautiful place. You should also check out Potter County, PA ( Austin, Austin Dam Sinnemahoning State Park)
Thanks for the suggestion!
Wow, beautiful. Gonna have to plan a trip.
I spoke with a home owner of Benezette in the summer of 2023. That person said to me. "Frist the elk come, they eat all my flowers, vegetables, knock down my fences and shit everywhere. Then the people come, they knock down my fences, park in my driveway and shit everywhere." Great Video - Well Done!
They should leave an move to Pittsburgh !
One of my favorite places. This was beautifully done.
Thank you very much!
Really well done. One of the best profiles of the place that has become my home away from home.
Awesome job!
Thanks!
Great job, poor Benny lol
Awesome
Fuck Abingdon I grew in abingdon and when away for 20 years in the and 20 years for the state police department and I still say fuck you
My ancestor, Eveline Estep 1867-1922, was born in Lee County. She was the daughter of Burrell H. Estep 1840-1933 and Surrilda J. Busic 1852-1919. She was married to Peter Rowland 1859-1923. Eveline's parents were from Brushy Mountain, North Carolina.
Here from Demon Copperhead
That was beautiful ❤
Beautiful!!
Thank you! 😊
Thank you for this. I live close by, go to Big Stone for music. These mountains do "hug" you and keep you safe. I took one look at my house and knew I would buy it, before ever going inside....i found out later I am on old Cherokee land by the Clinch River. Take care of the land, it will take care of you. ❤
Thanks for taking the time to interview my grandpa Poppa! Since his passing, I've been looking out for videos like this that showcased his passion for preserving Appalachian history. I didn't even know he did this one! It's very nice to have these interviews to look back on.
