I was born in Marion 😊 Please please please do an episode on Wytheville! My GRANDfather is the AMAZING Fred Brown of Wythe Raceway!!! I've lived in North Florida since I was 6, but I just happened to find this page && I got sooo excited when I saw MARION
You should come to western Maryland Cumberland
My 3rd-great grandma elizabeth (jones) clark was borm in tazwell,va in 1799. She married william madison clark and they lived near abingdon,va in the early 1820's into the mid 1800's.
9 state capitals are located in a shorter distance than Richmond which is not even in the eastern end! 😮
I'm watching this from my hometown Townsend Tennessee
Great show Josh!
Great show Josh
If you get thru Salmon Idaho I’ve got a place for you to stay and can share a few stories..
Hey Josh, congratulations on this channel. We spoke a few years back.. I’m the guy from Iaeger WV that lives in Idaho. I look forward to what you’re doing in 2025..great job in Cody I spent some time there last year..
I haven't been to Bristol in a long time, but now I want to! 😊
We’re glad you’re inspired to visit!
awesome! and yes, tell all of history, the good and bad.
Nature abhores a vacuum.
Did harold mitchel's son or nephew play running back for powell valley high school in the early 1980's?
An awesome town. Josh, I have some possible show content from KY, TN, & VA that might be of interest to you. It’s Appalachian but not typical stuff. Is there a way to communicate something like that with you by email, etc.
i live in bristol va and love it
May have focused on Lewisburg but actually is about the whole Greenbrier Valley.
Looking forward to our road trip to Floyd! (Roving through Virginia with Rover)
Our fire department sold a used fire truck in the late 70’s early 80’s along with a squad truck to Tazewell fire department. Fire Chief was William Heldriff, I believe and apologize for the last name spelling.
❤WV! ❤Appalachia. Excellent work Josh, this really made me homesick! Josh you know I'm biased here. I love my new home like nowhere I've ever been. It is perfect the way it is. I came as refugee, not a prophet. Please, please remember the reasons you left where you were, and for the love of baby Jesus. DO NOT BRING ANY OF THEM WITH YOU.
Ok first episode was where my great uncle worked as a pharmacist for majority of his career. Grundy Va. So I had a kinship with it. Now on to Lewisburg WV I lived there about 20 years ago now. Just really funny to me. Again thank you for this series. Seeing buildings I’ve not seen in 20 years. Other than on Google earth. lol.
My grandfather was born and raised in big stone gap. I used to go every year for our family reunion.
Ken Heath is a good good man. I remember him from the radio station and his giving away to win blue jeans and donuts from Food City. Dig Dog Stand still serving delicious food 😋. Wish that the factories would come back to USA and to Marion and Chilhowie and Atkins areas. I worked several factories before they closed and moved away 😢 To bring back jobs would turn the town around to be successful.
GREAT video!!! I enjoy learning about the hidden gems in the U.S. Now I want to visit Benezette! Thank you for introducing me to a place I had never heard of.
We live in Dubois,Pa just a short distance away. It is a beautiful area for sure. John Dubois was part of that lumber trade and it’s fascinating learning about the area.
The new express way that is coming Will change the area For good or bad that's for each person to decide
Bluefield West Virginia, my hometown, born there and I still have family living there the Turner family. And my mom was born and raised there. R family own Bluefield until the great depression
You should make a video about Russell county Virginia, smiley Ratliff, and the old governors mansion in elk garden!
Living in Abingdon now, spent my whole life in Norton. Thanks for the upload. Now, i can just watch this, whenever i get a little homesick. Lol....
I grew up in Keen Mtn Coal Camp. Such a wonderful place to spend your childhood!
My great Uncle Charles was the only pharmacist in Grundy for a very long time. I’ve always had a kinship with it. Most of my family are from Russell county though which isn’t that far from there. I now reside in Abingdon Va. Thank you for covering our area looking forward to more
I was born in Dickenson County over 74 years ago. My Dad was a coal miner, and we moved often to where he could find work. I was born in West Dante in a little house on the hill behind Phillips Store. It was nice to watch this episode because it's about my home. Though I left there in 1969, I still love the area, and I live in Florida now and don't make it up that way often. Many of you may know my brother Ken, he is the mayor of St. Paul, VA. I love this series. The productions are top-notch. Thank you!
Thanks so much for watching and for your kind words!
Haysi is my hometown. Lived and went to school there.
Thanks for coming to Dickenson County aka #VAsBaby to feature our wonderful people and small towns! I left here after college but soon returned and built my life here-7th generation to do so. No place like it.
I wasn't sure if PBS was still doing this series on SWVA coal towns. To see a new video hit was a real surprise. One of the best series PBS has every done. Josh the narrator from Mountain Roots is amazing. Nobody does it better. The one negative thing i will say is that this Buchanan County Industrial development association masks itself as doing good for the commmunity but what they don't tell you is that by bringing all these services into that small rural community, you are going to change it in ways that are not all positive. The reason that county is so beautiful is because there aren't any industrial parks and regional airports. All that pitch on tourism only destroys the county they are trying to save. I'm against any mass development of that nature.
Very beautiful little town I just love it
Rather hear you that Chris Stapleton any day!
We ❤ Bristol!
Go Blackbird and Bristol 🎉
You should also do a spotlight on Russell county! You should check out the old governors mansion in elk garden!
Unfortunately the tree fell down in a recent storm
Thank you for this... Well done and I found myself getting a bit emotional throughout.
We're so glad the video resonated with you!
And a big shout out to Ridgway for cleaning up the Clarion River. Clear Creek and Cooks Forest along the Clarion River is thriving because of the clean River. Just a beautiful river! And don't forget to eat at the Hulton Hilton along the Clarion River, lol No worries come as you are, no suit or tux needed.
The Clarion River is a treasure for sure!
Grew up here
Good job
We have been going to my buddy’s camp for the last 10 years for our golf trip. My favorite place to go. We play a few courses including treasure lake. We visit Straub brewery and fish. No cell service in most spots it’s so relaxing. Right by medix run I love it there
I love Ridgeway one of the best small towns in the area
It’s my favorite place in the world I hope to retire there some day, I take at least 10 rides up a year
Thank you so much to PBS Appalachia Virginia and the good people of Ridgway representing our hometown so well in this broadcast. Big family from Brooklyn NY came to town in 1969 and the town has been to us all as described in this production. Thank you friends and neighbors for being a great hometown!
I wish I had a dancing partner
I discovered Benezette and elk country in the early 1990's. Long before that &^%$#@( visitor's center was built or even thought of. You could roam the Saddle and Gray Hill freely. You could photograph elk, with caution, from 60 yards away. I fell in love with the area and visited to hike and camp for the next 15 years. Fast forward to 2006. Now it is overrun by loud obnoxious people with no regard for property or wildlife. They stand puffing on a cigarette, yelling back and forth to one another and wonder why they haven't seen any elk. When they finish their smoke, they flick the filtered butt on the ground. One that may biodegrade in 20 or 30 years. I still visit the Moshannon and Elk State forests, but I seldom go into town and I sure don't patronize the Visitor's Center. If I see elk down below the Quehanna Highway, that's great. If I don't, so be it. At least I'm not in a traffic jamb on 555 or listening to people scream back and forth at one another who think they've visited a petting zoo.
Thanks for sharing your experience. It’s definitely a different time now.
I bet its liberal central there. No thanks.
Don't worry - Elk county is very red.
I'm not so sure about that accusation of "Liberal Central." Investigate for yourself... You might be surprised.
You are very wrong, though honestly any sign of government is pretty far away. Not everything has to be political. Go enjoy nature. The elk don’t care who you vote for.
I saw a transgendered elk there once. That’s all I had to see to say no thanks.
It sounds like it'd be good for you to get out of your bubble.
