A Holiday Engagement by M.A. Nichols, Christmas Courtships Book 1 (Full Regency Romance Audiobook)

Charity Baxter is trapped in a cage of her own making. After being the tyrant of society for years, she fell from grace-and fell hard. Now, she is overlooked at the best of times and openly despised at the worst of it. Though troubles have a way of changing a person for the better, no matter how she tries to repair her reputation, no one is willing to believe her change of heart.
And matters are only made worse when an irritating naval officer appears in town, determined to pester her. Odious man! Why can he not leave her be? Forever laughing and jesting as though everything is a lark. Pretending all is right with the world when she can see it’s all an act.
Lieutenant Thomas Callaghan is hiding something.
Stranded ashore during the holiday season, Thomas decides to drop in on a friend for a few weeks until he’s free to pull up anchor and sail away. The swirl of the festivities are diverting enough, but far more so when he discovers a dark-haired beauty with fire and spirit, who is so easily provoked by his nonsense and ridiculousness (her words, not his). Yes, teasing and twitting her will definitely help to pass the time.
But Miss Baxter is not so haughty and cold as she seems.
Can he melt her cold facade before Christmas comes to a close? Will she get past his walls before his ship carries him away forever?

Friendship may blossom. Feelings may stir. But is it two lonely souls seeking companionship? Or perhaps something more? When Silas Byrnes married, he wasn’t expecting a happy ending for him and his wife. Theirs was a union of duty and not love, but fourteen years of marriage had been a misery for them both. Luckily the navy rarely allowed him time ashore. Now widowed, Silas has no choice but to...

Death ought not to be a happy thing, but then, marriage ought not to be a prison. Seven years ago, Lady Lydia Whiting married for the good of her parents, and widowhood was supposed to mark the beginning of her freedom. But when her husband spurns her from beyond the grave and cuts her from his will, her parents are determined to force her into another wretched marriage of convenience. Fleeing ...

      Tisane. Yeah, I'd never heard of it until I read historical romance & it's mentioned there but only in medical scenarios in which they made a tea with medicinal herbs. It wasn't until later that I discovered it wasn't a term specific to medicine but just meant "herbal teas."

    what about the nobility ranks of the French? England was once own by a French noble. By the way in France, knights were nobles and owned land including a small village. Chevalier = french knight.

    • @m.a.nichols
      @m.a.nichols 2 дні тому

      Good question, and I'm not sure about the differences. I don't write about the nobility, so I haven't done much research beyond the basic titles for England.

      @@m.a.nichols I see... Would've been nice. - England was owned by the French Duke of Normandy. (Northern France) And the most powerful Duke of France at that time wasn't even him. It was the Duke of Burgundy. (Northeastern France) also known as the wealthiest in all of Europe. - To the English, the hundred year war was significant. But to the French, it was nothing more then a insignificant rebelious province as they had more important wars to deal with. That's why England survived at all. Had the French Kingdom taken England as a priority enemy over the invading Muslims or over fighting the Germanics or other neighbours. The British Empire never would have existed as Britain would have easily been crushed and then Dan and Saxon languages would've been fully wiped out and replaced with French instead of blending together with French to become English like it did in our time. - So that is why you should also be teaching the French history as it is part of what birthed english and you should respect the french history as they couldve easily erased britain. - I see a lot of ignorant fools claiming Britain has always superior to France because they had the long bow. But in reality, the long bow was considered a trash weapon, it was just a hunting bow not meant for war. Comparing the best French crossbows with the english longbow is like comparing a high caliber French sniper riffle vs a low caliber English pistol. Yes your pistol has a much higher fire rate. But he will drop dead long before gets to fire a single shot. Thats the difference. - And when i say crossbow, i am not refering to the toys you see on video where they can draw bare handed. Those are just training crossbowa. A real one have a gear system that you must crank to draw it. The more powerful ones used by Burgundy had to be cranked with your feet by laying down on your back and holding it with your hands. I have searched for online videos of such crossbows, but haven't found any. I do have books about them. But i have i dea how i'd make a video one them. I'm no good at that kind of hightech stuff. - But, oh my, i have gotten way off topic here. So i'll stop blabbering for nothing here.

      I totally agree. France & England's history is intrinsically tied together. But as I write stories set in 1800s England (mostly village life), the research I'm sharing is stuff I learn for my books. 😁

      Yeah, I understand. But their story isn't over quite yet. I have a sequel for the book (Beneath the Mistletoe), which is available on Amazon and will be posted here in a few weeks. While the story follows her father getting a second chance at love after her mother passes away, Charity and Thomas are part of the story (though he's not around for most of it, unfortunately). They've also got a continuing story that I'm publishing in a few weeks called, "Once Upon a Christmas Eve." It's the final book in this series and will feature Thomas and Charity as well as they go to his family for Christmas (and while they're there, his sister finds love!). So, they do have more to come if you're interested in hearing more of their story.

      @@m.a.nichols YES! I'd love to see how Charity's father does. I like stories where there are older people who find love. My favorite is "Women of a Certain Age" by Josi Kilpack. Speaking of, I have "Beneath the Mistletoe" in my Wish List on Audible. I'm also super excited to read "To Have and To Hold." It seems to have some socio-political things going on, as well as the romance, in those times. I'm sold! I am definitely interested in the continuing stories with different characters all interconnected. Thank you, so much for responding and sharing what's going on in the series. You rock!

      All the photos are ones I took during a trip to London in 2022. The exterior shot is from the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, the two massive interior shots are from the Royal Opera House. The boxed seats image (2nd to last) was the Noel Coward Theatre where I saw Dear Evan Hansen and the final shot is from Six, performed in the Vaudeville Theatre. The others are illustrations from Regency era magazines that I snagged online. If you ever have a chance to do so, I highly recommend taking the behind the scenes tour of the Theater Royal and the Royal Opera House. Fascinating!
