RCA AR-88LF WWII Communications Receiver Part 1 -Analysis
The AR-88 series of receivers were built in the U.S and Canada mostly for shipment to Europe as part of Lend-Lease agreements with the allies.
The LF lacks the standard am broadcast band! The other versions have it.
It uses 14 Vacuum Bulbs and should work much better with a long wire antenna.

Radiola 33 Restore, Power Transformer Rebuild And Modification
Переглядів 3777 місяців тому
Replacing Failed Power Transformer, modifying the circuit to use a 245 in place of a 71A. And NO I did not replace one capacitor! I have had good luck with 1920s RCA capacitors! RCA's low end radio of 1929, it is basically a radiola 18 but cost cut in almost every way possible at the time. I do like the art deco cabinet, if only it had been cast from aluminum instead of pot metal.

It's not a radio, I'm NOT interested. Not worth selling for a measly $20 on craigslist either, the buyers always waste so much of my time!!
Atwater Kent and Stromberg Carlson Chassis Power up

Two radio chassis, definitely a cut above from most other junk from similar years. The filter caps on the AK measure 14k ohms to ground... OUCH! No wonder the voltage was so low! Too bad the cabinets are long trashed...

N0t ThE VinTaG3!!! Spring Cleaning VINTAGE clear out of some crap that's been sitting around for far too long. LOL I almost feel bad about EOLing that westinghouse but it was really JUNK the chassis had many botched repairs and missing parts.
Westinghouse 99A Chassis Part 1

1929 Westinghouse 99A Superheterodyne chassis. It WAS a nice radio at one time If you look up a picture of it... Probably got trashed when the SPU burned up because it's definitely a high hour set, I didn't notice earlier but even the interstage transformer had been replaced with an rca replacement, And it was recapped sometime in the 40s
RCA Radiola 33 (with shorted power transformer)
Переглядів 67711 місяців тому
The dates on the tubes say 1947... The transformer most likely failed from many years of use, I don't know what it is with the RCA models from 1929 and the horrible cheap pot metal...The 33 cost $77.50 in '29. There will be a part 2 if I can find a transformer.
RCA Radiola 17 Part 5 FINAL!

FINALLY! of course its not perfect... SHUT UP OCD!!! 1927 RCA's first radio designed to run off AC current form a wall outlet or lamp socket. putting the finishing touches on it, solving an oscillation issue on lower frequencies, and refinishing the cabinet, plus some older video of the 'socket power unit' as RCA called it being restored...

Power supply Recap and volume control issues. this radio had a weird and useless AVC tube which is why there is a delay when I turn the volume. Similar if not identical to an RCA Radiola 80 chassis

Lowering supply voltage until epic failure. This is about the best thing you can do with these things, Its impossible to get any software for em. I sold the other junk so now all I got is a mac and keyboard with no mouse LOL.

Uhhh i did this and it just shut off😮
honestly it wasn’t to hard to do and worth it!
Thank you Alan from smiling friends
Some serious "Don't f%*k with Cats" vibes here
First tube radio I worked on was a Philco. That thing was ASS.
Those Sanyos are actually really nice.
If you want a Lamp Hood to finish off your great restoration, let me know. I had them exactly reproduced and can send you one as a thank for the resto series.
Most 26 tubes from that era are usually bad as they don't last all that long.
The squeal noise is uncontrolled oscillation. RCA knew it was a problem with these sets and had a 4 areas to look at mentioned in the service manual (defective grid resistors, excessive filament voltage, antenna too close to transformers, try a different 27-tube). Also, there's a trimmer cap built into the tuning condenser assembly (looks like a brass screw at the bottom of it) that can be dialed in to peak performance. The hoods were supposed to be easily removable so you could replace the pilot lamp without taking the chassis out of the cabinet. They assumed that the consumer would feel comfortable lifting the hood off (it was held on with metal tabs), unscrewing the tiny light bulb, and then sliding the hood back on. Are you in the US? I can make hoods and could throw one in the mail. I use the same username at the antiqueradioforum (antiqueradios dt com).
yeah do! thats in nice shape, they are worth alot, definately!
did it work? if not, then whatever, if it worked then.. well number one you could have hurt yourself, number 2 these monitors are getting rarer. no this isnt a hate comment.
Yo it always trips or sparks near the power supply lol
That radio is in very good condition compared to some which I've tried to resurrect over the years. Your disdain for this radio is upsetting and it seems you're not experienced in what constitutes a poor choice of radio. I resurrected a very similar radio as this well over 20 years ago and it was in far poorer condition (someone employed used motor oil as a wood finish and they drilled/hacked the chassis to try (and fail) to install a phonograph jack). By any measaure your radio is in excellent shape.
Yes, you may be right, maybe old radios are just too common here, and I have got several really nice radios for free over the years. I did resurrect this thing and paint the chassis however no longer have the cabinet.
Una pena, se nota que les sobra el tiempo y la plata. Por qué no lo regaló?
Gorgeous radio! That would have cost a lot back in the day!
Where's your video burning $50 notes? What a dipwad!
I am here becuase I didn't believe them telling me i shouldn't clean my psu but i just did before watching how to clean it lmao. i even went in and clean the board. now after watching this I am laughing so hard you deserve more subs bro
Could I have that when your done. I always wanted a AR88 my whole life?
Omg tyvm
I laughed when you talked like Garret Claridge.
ahah
I just cleaned my PSU today and now I saw that we cant touch capacitor cs its give a shock and that might kill us🥲🥲 I didnt know that. Im alive, Alhamdulillah
Very nice receiver! I have 2 and an RCA CR91A, Marconi CSR5, Hammerlund SP-600 and etc.
Good cool 😎
Kewl!
2:31 i think you're referring to cellulose nitrate which I don't think is the type of film this type of projector played. That stuff was usually on like 35mm film before the 1930s? I don't think they made 16mm films on the really flammable stuff.
I got the same model...the cost cutting has me a little concerned...apparently there are these pot metal legs these things were supposed to stand with once upon a time. i doubt any survive today.
And now some of the pot metal trim fell off mine…pot metal is evil stuff
I thought about not cleaning the PSU on my Compaq Deskpro EN. But the 24 years of dust and grime swiftly convinced me otherwise.
Your radio hums because it doesn't know the words....🤣
The beginning of this video alone deserves a thumbs up. Funny stuff
Actually very interesting - well done - dedication and perseverance!
Excellent job! Adding a new secondary to that small transformer was a great idea and should last as long as the current draw is not too high. The only thing I might have done differently (perhaps not) was to use a divider network of resistors or a voltage regulator to turn the 6.3 volt secondary into the the 2nd 5v supply. Ye, using it to power the pilot light makes sense too. Since you have crappy AM stations, you could had Bluetooth as an option for cool tunes. Anyway, as I said, Great job! :)
I could still change it later if I wanted... I never thought of using the 6.3V to power the 71A. At the same time I thought it was easier to use a 45 since my added resistor already created the negative grid bias voltage and my transformer the 2.5 for the filament. I am going to build eventually an am transmitter to broadcast music it is just proving tough getting the oscillator working.
hello daws
Great set!
why tho
Really?? Nobody ever seems to understand... its simple... I have garbage no one else wants, stuff you CAN'T EVEN GIVE AWAY its so worthless. I have to get rid of it somehow, so I have fun while doing so.
@@randomelectronics2224 give it to e-waste. some nerd like me will come along and pick it up, and you will get money
@@randomelectronics2224 also, 5:54 you just overvolted a tv, of course its dead
@@randomelectronics2224 and jesus a 1930s radio cabinet.. thats 90 YEARS OF HISTORY DESTROYED IN SECONDS i hope youre proud..
@@randomelectronics2224I'd just neck the CRT and put the chassis on my pile of parts PCB's.
The 50C5 is about to go nuclear
Or is it? This Turd has been playing for a year straight as part of an experiment on the life of vacuum tubes!! Still working, but distorted. This uses a ceramic disc capacitor for audio coupling btw.
You say you have magic eye tubes that always have issues? Are you replacing the 1 meg ohm resistor in their tube sockets? That resistor is almost always bad. Magic eye tubes are awesome when they are working. They are especially cool at nigh when doing DXing! Stromberg Carlson radio has one electrolytic that was replaced back around the 50's. It has an Aerovox capacitor, which was probably made in New Bedford, MA or Brooklyn, NY. They are rated 500-650 WVDC because these radios can have up to 750AC on each side of the rectifier tube plates. So BE VERY CAREFUL - HIGH AC and B+ VOLTAGE in those chassis! Those beefy 5U4 rectifiers, were later used as damper tubes in B&W TVs. The Atwater Kent, is an awesome radio and looks incredible! Each of those small capacitors you identified correctly, as well as the large boxes with the filter caps and transformers , are filled with black tar! You have to melt the tar to get them out to replace the caps. Enjoy! :)
I always forget to check that 1meg resistor... And I am debating wether to melt the tar or try mounting a terminal strip in the Atwater Kent, I have melted it out in the past but it's a hassle. I will build a cabinet for the speaker.
17:02 The kind of music people blast in middle of nowhere in Bulgaria.
I watched Dr Who The Sea Devils from the early 70s where he makes a transmitter from an AM transistor radio. This is the nearest I have seen to recreating that.
I am Back!!!!! Sounds like Arnold S. 🙂
