The Mill
Приєднався 11 лип 2006
Hi there!! I run a big sawmill out of Madison, WI! It’s called “The Mill”. It’s a Matt Cremona style mill that I designed and built myself. Lots of milling content on this channel; logs, slabs, lumber and cookies. I also like to make stuff outta steel, wood, leather, composites and textiles. So there is some of that as well. Thanks for joining along for the ride!

Very cool we are definitely brothers for other Mothers...thanks
I just found your channel,i love what you are doing and the type of shop you are building.I look forward to catching up on your videos.
I noticed when you lifted the axe before you swung it down you had already slid your hand down to the base of the axe. It helps me a lot to slide my hand as the axe it's dropping down.
Beautiful slabs👍 Nice job!! You have a great setup & shop! Nothing more fun than seeing what a natural tree can produce in gorgeous lumber! I milled a few walnut trees & have made some custom furniture for family over the years. So satisfying to build something out of a log👊Keep up the good work!
Thanks 👍
why the thin cut then the thick cut and so on through the slab?
the thin cuts will become toe kicks
Awesome!
I keep those old desk lamps too......right over my sander......set to always sand on the horizontal. ( Vertical is for the birds )
I agree, it is fun just to hang out and see what other people have and their ideas.
nice shop, totes jelly of that table. cant even imagine what that piece of plate cost new.
Right! For reals!! Between the steel and the effort building out the platform and the fact that it is machined flat! Oh man. Would be a ton of work and $$$ to duplicate!
Exactly the style of milling I'll be doing. Throw in an evening and knock out 2-3 logs plain sawn into a handful of slabs that'll end up getting dried and broken down into furniture componentry. Digging your setup man. Always enjoy watching!
Hey hey, thanks for the kind words. Be sure to share ur setup once ya get cutting. Always enjoy seeing the other sawyers out there do there thing!
@@TheMillMadison For sure! Things will really crank up this fall and I'm excited to share.
I feel fine. To each their own
😂
Ok dumb question here, but how the hell does steel gets inside that tree ? Like I assume it wasn't stuck in it and coming out in anyways or you'd have noticed it.
People put steel in for lots of stuff. Fencing, plant hangers, bird feeders, laundry lines… etc etc. Eventually the metal is forgotten and the tree keeps growing, eventually enveloping the metal.
Lucky dump truck! If you put them on Rick it would put him in a higher tax bracket. Those are beautiful.
I think you were set up Bro.
plane hit steel! Plane hit steel!
Invest in a metal detector
Yup, it would tell me there is metal somewhere in the log. Just wish I knew where!
some left wing nut job spiked the tree
well show as it comes out???
It was a flag holder!! I’ll post it this wknd 👍
Swamp oak
Don’t they have magnetic sensors to catch that type of thing? That a pretty big chunk of
They could tell you it’s in there. But not where. Maybe xray? Besides most of the logs i do would still warrant being cut even after hitting the metal.
@@TheMillMadison what's the revenue-to-cost ratio, in terms of what you'd get for cutting a log versus what it costs to replace a saw blade?
@@RamadaArtistblades cost $67.50 a piece. Each slab, once finished, should be worth $750+ so yeah it’s easy math.
@@TheMillMadison Holy goddamn, sub 10%? _(Per slab?_ And I don't even know how many slabs you typically run per log.) Yeah, that's easy math indeed.
You can sweep a log with a metal detector in about 15 seconds, give it a try, will save you a ton of money.
The kind of logs I saw are valuable enough to cut em anyway. 🤷 I just assume every log has it, then I’m pleasantly surprised if I dont hit any.
Idk why my phone thought it appropriate to but it just swaped to a random video of Chinese employee instructional videos so ya know maybe take it as a sign lol, i will.
Roll w it 🎲
Ecoterrorism?
Sounds about right
@@TheMillMadison at least nobody gets injured from events like this. Gotta look on the bright side. 👍🏻
Who was terrorised by this?
@@Frellnikkymy emotional sanctity 😆
@@Frellnikky it keeps organizations from effectively maintaining forestry services. Some jackass driving a railroad bike into the middle of a tree is Eco terrorism.
Buy a metal detector...
Would that stop me from milling the log?
Whats the biggest thing you have hit? When I worked at a fir mill heard the biggest thing they hit was an aluminum rim 😂 ive seen rail spikes and such myself.
Dude! That would be kinda cool! Did the big mill just go right through the rim, it being aluminum and all? Weirdest thing I ever found was a ceramic sculpture. Thankfully, I didn’t hit that with the sawmill blade because that would’ve been a very quick finish to that blade. I haven’t been lucky, or unlucky enough to hit anything too weird.
How did you get ahold of that
Urban foresting
Looks like it had a bad case of the case starting. The one that makes me cry is that cross-section leaning against the wall that's got to be 6 ft diameter
And here I'm am looking at the tree that split in half and laying in my neighbors yard @@barrelmitt1544
Which version of MolyKote are you using??? So many choices! I also have a Matt Cremona clone, but Diesel powered. I am on like my fourth set of acme threaded rods. Living outside is the biggest problem there. But I recently bought bellows to cover the rods and was looking for the best lubricant to put on them. Good information here!
Niiiiice! We’re like cousins! You got a social media presence? I’d love to see what it looks like. Bellows will be a big help! It’s the molykote g-n
This is the cheapest I found, unless u wanna invest in a quantity www.ebay.com/itm/266768687138?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=XyNjb9NbQyq&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=4oE_HF_rTSq&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY
Such a sick build! One thing I wished I built onto my mill is a power feed but that's an eventual thing. Theres some good information in this video that'll help me out when I go that route. Keep up the killer work dude.
Right. On. Stoked to hear. I was thinking yesterday while posting this video how there isn’t much decisive info on power feed mechanisms. Some discussion threads etc, but not much show and tell- pictures or videos. Glad you found this vid helpful! Feel free to reach out if u ever wanna go through some of the details. 🙏🤙✌️
@@TheMillMadison there is a serious lack of information on UA-cam of home built mill solutions in general. Especially in the context of electric mills. The more information we can share, the better!
They ain't lasting only takes one bad operator ask me how ik
Yup, that’s about right. They’re stout though! That’s for sure 👍
yada yada yada...
Its either yada yada yada or blah blah blah. either of those I am saying all the time! Ha!
Beautiful..
Yeah Im always looking and thinking how I can make the sawmill better and how I can a better Sawyer, I feel like I know nothing and know a little less each day!
True that! I think we’re at a distinct advantage considering we built our own mills we know they’re working inside now. I’m sure as the days and years roll on that’s gonna mean we’ll end up with something far better than what most people could who just buy something and run it without really knowing how it works.
Yup wings in the air fryer i second that

Howdy!! Good input. You’re spot on. I’m running .055 1-1/2. I hit SO MUCH steel. Some day I feel like that’s my actual job. Blades are +/- $60 a piece, my number one expense. 1-1/2 helps mitigate the issue, but it’s still definitely a thing. Eventually looking forward to trying 2”, though I haven’t priced them out yet, and frankly I’m a little scared to. 😅😅 would love all that extra beam!!
Beautiful slabs, love the setup, nice beefy mill, 3 phase is the way to go, very little maintenace compared to a diesel. Your dogging setup looks better than alot ive seen for big logs. I sharpen my own blades but i dont try to resharpen blades that have hit significant metal. It puts a huge amount of stress on the blade and micro fractures and the blade will break down the road which can damage various components of the sawmill especially if running at high tension. Looks like your running 1.5in steel, i would personally go to 0.55 2in steel next time your change your guides but thats just my preference. Best regards.

The appearance of the grain pattern is significant as it determines the wood's distinctive character, strength, and suitability for various applications.. It's important to carefully display the grain pattern to us.
Got it! More grain screen time! ✅
@@TheMillMadison Thankyou so much,, Good job
How did the grain pattern look? Seemed as though you had a bit of twist to work with.
Really good observation! Suuuuper twisty! Some the slabs had a 45 degree grain orientation. It looked cool. This log must’ve been ancient. It was super seasoned. Somebody had been sitting on this thing for a while. It sawed really easy, grain looked good, pretty dark.. will definitely be a dramatic deepcolored lumber when finished.
You are living the dream dude. I liked, subscribed with the bell thing, and am leaving a comment. Fully juicing the engagement for the algorithm, best of luck.
Yo!!!!!!! Good looking out! I appreciate it! Thanks a ton! I feel super thankful of to have found something that for whatever reason I think is really fun. Might not be everybody’s cup of tea, but for folks like you and me, this is it!
Sweet have a great 4th yourself!
Thanks! Fireworks were had! It was good, hope it’s was too!!
that looks like an old bow anchor to hold your bow in the tree.
Cool, never would have figured that out.
I’ve never caused that much damage w just the tip

Just the tip that's what she said 😂😂😂
Yep your gonna need some new tip on bandsaw blade to no joke sucks man
Is that a Moline forklift? Mine looks nearly identical.
Yup!! MY70
Damn!
This is the universe saying time to clean up the shavings, maintenance the mill, oil everything, etc.
There are no accidents. Contributing factors and a root cause lead to this. Glad nobody was hurt.
True that.
Everything that can kill you always happens in a split second. Glad you're ok. Had a few close calls and a couple injuries in my 30 years around machines. Do not run that "janky" Replace or repair what you need to or the next accident might hurt.
Well said. Thankfully the repairs were successful. Back up and running 👍
