Water & Odorless Thinner Chipping | Tamiya 1/48 Corsair IV
Hello! Welcome, this video shows the chipping processes for Gloss Sea Blue Navy aircraft using Mission Models Blue, and ATOM Yellow.
Why have I chosen to try this?
I saw Rinaldi Studio Press showing this in a video for his technique guide and wanted to try this myself, because I trust Mr Rinaldi and I liked what I saw.
It is far more efficient than using Chipping Fluid and lacquers, and the finish is far superior IMHO.
What I saw in Mr Rinaldi's work was grounded in the references of FAA Corsair IVs sailing with the British Pacific Fleet. I also wanted to try this out on a Korean war USMC F4U-4B soon.
A few things to note:
MMP is a little picky, so I keep it seperate from all other paints/brands of thinners. I had a new airbrush when I started using MMP, so I just use Mission with this airbrush.
Make sure you ground yourself in the appropriate reference photos to ensure you don't deviate from what you see... If your goal is realism.
Plan what you will do and make it as less complicated as possible. I think the mask over the varnished decals is already pushing it, an unnecessary varnish with a coat of MMP to nullify the deletion of all MMP benefits that could've been avoided by using masks.

Hasegawa's Fuji/Boeing AH-64D 'Apache' - JGSDF Kumamon markings

This Hasegawa kit from 2001 is still the king of the hill for 48th scale Apaches, despite the flurry of new tooled kits in 35th in 2023. The Hasegawa Kit features excellent details, and when paired with RedFox 3d cockpit decals (courtesy of @ScaleHangar182) the kit builds into an excellent Apache.
Tamiya's 1/48 Mosquito B.Mk.IV + Bonus OPR rundown

This was primarilly an OPR test, to see what I could do with just oil paints, with no preshading or postshading to help. The black was a challenge and looks inadequate. I believe that for a black surface, postshading and decent prep for the surface is needed before starting OPR. @rs.p - Great tutotials to learn OPR.

Eduard's 1/48 A6M3 Type 22

It is an awesome build, beautiful details throughout, with masks and extra photo etch in the profipack edition. Only the gear is weak, and hard to align fully. Built with additional eduard wheel set. I apologise it sounds as though I am slaming the Eduard kit in the begining. The fact that the only criticism I have is a weak gear connection and weaker structural feeling compared to Tamiya (who ...
Is Tamiya's 1/48 A6M3 superior to Eduard's offering?

Completed in September 2023. Tamiya pros: - Strong & sturdy structure - Excellent fit - Above average details throughout - Figures included - PE for wing fold included - Contains uncut masks for canopy Tamiya cons: - Less detail than Eduard - Not fully riveted - Thicker decals Eduard pros: - Surface fully riveted - Superior detail to Tamiya - Contains PE & pre-cut masks for canopy & wheels (Pro...

It's a pretty big kit one might say.
Kinetic's EA-6B Prowler in 48th Scale

It's an alright kit I guess... The prominent intake gap is not as noticable as I posed the ladder down. It is pretty awesome to have a prowler though...

Nice!😊 I've used Tamiya for so long I never had much reason change but have been expanding with mission models paints.
Awesome, thank you!
Really liked how you showed the reference pics throughout. That was a great idea.
Thanks, I think it is a great touch, not many others do it, and it helps with seeing what is going on 👍
I don’t see the HUD.
Yes... The model isn't completed. I was still painting the exterior.
@@irismodelling thanks for the feedback 👍

Awesome Work!
this is the best F-22 paint job I saw and it's very hard to paint an f-22 good job man
Dump the awful music and raise your voice
Great build!!!
Loved this build. Hi-five from a fellow UA-cam creator from across the pond!
Прекрасная модель. КОТА ПОКАЗЫВАЙ!!!
I'd love to see more on exhaust and oil stains.
Beautiful model. Please, what colors did you use on it?
Hello excellent buuld i have a question how many hours does IT take yOu to make this model excluding drying time?
It took something similar to a 48th scale propeller aircraft for me, so 2 weeks to get to painting stage, doing 1-2 hours a day I’d say.
@@irismodelling IT wilk be around 25 hours to finish model i guess thank for answer
GREAT job, I love EA-6B Prowler
I was wondering about that bear.
Nice job there. FYI RAF Wyton is pronounced "Witt'n", and the engine gondola would be a nacelle (pron na-sell) in British service.
Not the biggest fan of brit planes, but you did a jolly good job on this one. On a side note, if you got the time and money to spare, is there an chance that you are going to build a Su-34 or 37?
Thank you, I will make a Su-35 either this year or next 👍
Beautiful. I admit I'm a Phantom Phreak and a fan of the JASDF. Despite the issues to correct, my go to is the 1/32 Tamiya F4E and EJ kits. Depicted the EJ as 17-8301. Tamiya stopped production on the two E models so for the next two JASDF F4-EJ to be built I had to order the sprue replacement parts from Japan for the E nose and use the F4C/D and J kits to convert. With the decals from DMX one will be 17-8440 the other in Sea Camouflage. When completed the 301 and a F15J, 02-8801, are JASDFs first of the type and 440 the last will be displayed together in flight on custom stands. The Sea Camo resting on its gear with obvious, weighted tires so I don't get yelled at. Also converted two kits to make the F-4E Terminators with the newer wing parts and centre fuel tank from the Revell kits. If interested I have them posted on my channel.
Stunning.. magnificent job!
Bad ass F4j
Looks good in that F-2A camouflage.
Here's the one thing that all the suppose to be professional model builder's miss , airplanes all have WEIGHT , but somehow their TIRES are PERFECTLY ROUND WHEN SITTING ON THE GROUND , they forget to FLATTEN THE GROUND CONTACT POINT , it gives the model the appearance of REAL WEIGHT.
At 3:51 you can see that I have sanded down the wheels to create flat spots. However yes, for three fuel tanks it is a bit reserved on the amount removed.
Nice job very Kool livery. Keep it up 👋
I made the Italeri, but I am definitely going to get this kit when I next go to Japan.
Ive had good fortune with Hasegawa kits over the years, very consistant but not quite Tamiya...
Mostly Because Nobody Seem’s to Be Competing for The Best Model of one of The Most Famous Jets Ever of Recent History Seriously People Keep Telling Me The Tamiya Handmedown One’s Trash and This Is Almost The Only Presentable Kit of The Raptor How in The Goddam!?
Great subject for a model and a beautiful color scheme. You have done it proud. I am tempted to make the Fine Molds 1/72 kit.
Thank you! You should try the Fine Molds, it looks like a good kit
Shut up I know that’s starscream
?
I would love to see a video where you do the chipping.
I think I did record some of it, but deleted it in the end. But I’ll have some more coming up so I’ll show that 👍
Who cares if it's supposedly ”underweathered".......LOL!! I think it looks awesome!!
Nice job! Im kind of miffed about GWH decals though. With the price they're going at it is very disappointing to have to go out and get aftermarket decals. I was thinking about getting this GWH kit but not anymore
Just go aftermarket, the kit is worth it in the end 👍
this airplain lkocks realy as it is 100 jears old ^^ but grait modeling job :)
what is the difference between the minibase su-33 & the minibase su-27k ?
I am not an expert on Su-33, however Su-27K and Su-33 are the same thing (For most russian fighter aircraft, K designation = carrier capable version). Minibase Su-33 (8001) is standard version of Su-33. The Su-27K kit (8002) comes with Kh-41 missile. I think it is an obscure version of Su-33 that has undergone tests for this missile, because of the rarer/uncomon colour scheme. Hope this helps
The fading/chipping of the green looks awesome. Really in scale and complements the natural metal chipping nicely. Also, thanks for explaining what OPR is and why its such a valuable skill.
Thank you very much! I find that following references very closely, often copying them will ensure you don't overdo chipping 👍👍
Amazing job m8
The oil work looks great!
Thank you!
Excellent paint work! I built Kinetic's offering and that paint scheme was a challenge.
Awesome, it was a tricky paint scheme for sure
Great looking Su-33, I really like the paint job and how the engines look, good job!
Thanks you very much my friend!
Outstanding video and presentation.
Thank you!
Wow 🤩
New to your channel. Arty and substance mixed together, very nice feel to your video. One thing, you need to alter the music/vocal mix a little, as the (lovely) music makes it difficult to hear your soft voice. Subscribed.
Lovely work but I hate that term Oil Paint Rendering, it's a pretentious way of saying weathering
Weathering can be done with many more things other than oils, and OPR is just all with oils. Helps being more specific.
You scratch built all that? Amazing work.
Just the engine damage! Thank you 👍
Cool 🛩 model
Really cool. 👍
Very nice ! I've built a few of these Tamiya tomcats and they are great. I'm not a heavy weather-er myself I can do it but I like the slightly weathered look. Keep up the good work and HAPPY SCALING 👋.
Beautiful job. I think the canopy gap is due to it being fitted back to front.
It is fitted as the instructions say - if it were the other way round, the canopy wouldn't look like it could slide back straight 👍
Nice! love how the weathering turned out.
Thank you!!
Just finished a Tamiya A-model, my first time ever doing one of these. I painted her up as the Maverick & Goose bird and gave her to my Dad for Christmas. I absolutely love this kit, especially with a Reedoak pilot and RIO in the seats. I’ll be building another one at some point soon, as I recently watched “The Final Countdown” with my kids, and now my son wants to have Victory 203 hanging in his room.
Awesome, I'm sure he'll love it with those Reedoak pilots! They are amazing.
You Tomcat is rad. And your real cat is also rad.
