    Been looking around youtube as I'm curious if propane would help emmisions diesel engines avoid regen or maybe reduce EGT when towing.

    • @GillansGarage
      @GillansGarage 5 днів тому

      That’s an interesting idea!!! As the idea of propane is to aid with a more complete burn supposedly it might make a difference. 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️. I guess my only concern would be the high cost of a failure on one of those new engines.

      @GillansGarage 2.8L duramax can get a bit hot when towing heavy loads on long Pennsylvania hills. I don't need more power, necessarily. I found a guy testing EGT and he noticed running less throttle higher rpms in a lower gear helps alot. I want to be able to floor it and know it'll be fine without worrying about gaudges.

      Water methanol may be more in line for lowering EGT’s while towing.

    My horn operates but my cruise control does not. I made sure that the vacuum system works and all fuses were fine. I see you mentioned the horn and cruise control operation at one point in the video where you showed the three contacts. I am thinking this may be the culprit. Hopefully just remove and clean contact points. I am unsure if the buttons could be worn as well?

    What did you do with the speedometer cable? I’m wanting to install a 12v Cummins with a ZF6 into a 1987 model 1 ton

    • @GillansGarage
      @GillansGarage 2 місяці тому

      Being that this is 1997 it has the speed sensor in the rear axle it was a non-issue. For your swap it’s more complicated. Might I suggest a GPS speedometer. I’m sorry I’m not more helpful. Ever since we ZF5 swapped the ‘87 Econoline 6.9 turbo diesel we just use an old Garmin GPS for a speedometer. Haha.

    • @LimaTangoZulu
      @LimaTangoZulu 2 місяці тому

      @@GillansGarage do you know if the old school t-case will bolt to a ZF6? The speedometer cable goes to the tail housing of the t-case on 4x4 trucks. That might make it work.

    • @GillansGarage
      @GillansGarage 2 місяці тому

      @Alien.Dog_ Not without modifying the input shaft on the old T-case. The shaft diameter and spine count are different.

    • @LimaTangoZulu
      @LimaTangoZulu 15 днів тому

      @@GillansGarageso I actually figured out that one way you could do it, if you want to keep the 7.3 IDI or PSD, is to get a 2wd ZF6, and run a divorced mount NP205 with a short shaft to connect the two. The 205 has the speedometer sender for the cable, so everything works like stock. Just need a longer cable. For me, since I’m doing a 12v Cummins swap, I’ll be running an NV5600 transmission. So what I would do is use a direct mount 205 with a Torque King 29 spline input shaft and adapter kit. Then the 205 bolts right to the NV5600, and the speedometer can connect to the 205, and everyone is happy :)

    • @LimaTangoZulu
      @LimaTangoZulu День тому

      I found an even better solution: Advance Adapters makes a kit to connect an NV4500 to a Ford NP205. This same kit will work to connect a G56 diesel tranny to the original BW1356 t-case. Now I don’t need to track down another gearbox and rebuild it :)

Got questions on Gear Vender overdrive since you mounted the back side of transfer case doesn't it only works when it's in two drive? @GillansGarage Hey there! I've seen your work and it's quite impressive! In fact you were one of the main reasons why I decided to pick up a 1981 Econoline E150 with a 3+OD (I guess, four speed). I do not like that transmission at all. I'd love to do a 5MODR2 swap. I feel that I'm at a crossroads right now because the floor panels in the cab (front front and front rear) need to be replaced due to the huge amount of pitting, holes, and in addition the metal that was broken out when one of the dog house bolts was ugga'dugga'd to hell and tore the metal off the floor (to get the bolt and nut out, I still have the bolt, nut, and piece of floor in between..) Anyway, I was wondering if now would be the time to do the swap? I'm not sure the shifter will sit in the same place as the "old" transmission and rather than cut my new floorboards multiple times (if I were to do the swap later) sounds unappealing. Would you be interested in talking through this a bit with me? A DM, response, or anything of the sort would be wonderful however I do understand you are a busy man, with that said your experience in this particular swap is really appealing. I picked a manual econoline so I would have the foot pedals and have a decent amount of the manual transmission parts, but at this point I'm unsure what I need to buy or where to even begin. Anyway, thank you for your time. I hope to hear from you. All the best, may you be happy, healthy and prosperous! (I work 3rd shift, hence the almost 3AM comment time..CT)

    Hey, I’m going to swap my zf5 on my 95 to zf6. I have a couple questions if anyone could answer I’d appreciate it. Does the crossmember have to be e99 zf6 or do all NBS crossmembers work?(the trans I’m putting in is a 2003)Is it the same clutch from zf5? (I have solid flywheel conversion kit) How much lower were your RPMs on the highway? A lot of people that haven’t done this have told me it’s not worth the swap and that I’ll have to smash the cab with a hammer to get it to fit. I already have the trans tho so really no turning back. Also my zf5 is garbage anyway due to previous owner not installing pilot bearing when doing the solid flywheel conversion.

    • @GillansGarage
      @GillansGarage 3 місяці тому

      I would assume any 7.3 ZF6 crossmember will work with the small modification I mentioned. I used the ZF6 clutch which if I recall correctly it’s bigger than the ZF5 clutch. Based on the math it will lower your top end rpm’s by about 120 rpm’s but that’s only half the story. The better low gear and the shift pattern with low and reverse across from each other is a big benefit for me especially whenever pulling a load and maneuvering it. The only minor tweak I had to make was at the back of the opening in floor and leave one screw out in the center of that cover. Very minor considering the benefits for me. I’ve got about 40k miles on my swap and I have zero regrets.

    Ran into a similar issue after just getting a body swap done on a 1988 gen 3 body to a 4x4 gen 4 frame. As you mentioned it's easy to find the top rubber portion of the body mounts but I couldn't find the metal nor the bottom rubber. I ended up finding a polyurethane mounts for 2008-2016 F250s and 350s. It had the metal hardware that worked, I cut down the top poly mount to match the thickness of the stock rubber bottom mounts I took off the van, and used them with the new top rubber mounts meant for the vans. I'm just working through engine issues now.

    I was going to use pallet rack to build a body cart for my 1955 Chevy but ended up finding a heavy duty, 13’ long (workbench height) welding fixture (?) that was permanently welded together. I cut it apart and added mounting plates so now it bolts together, but more importantly, comes apart so I can store it. I paid $50 for the original welding fixture which had $200 worth of casters.

Ford likely went with those because the older style mounts likely didn't hold up well or it is more economical to mold a solid mount vs a "vented" mount. Hey I got a question I’m doing a manual swap from an automatic To a zf6 and I need to figure out what I need to do for a wiring harness for the zf6 so I can get my engine to start and to get Cruise control to work

    Too much fluff, and you should have shown how you got the wheel loose.

      Thanks for the feedback, I mentioned wiggling it back and forth which mine wasn’t that tight apparently. However tightness might be different on different trucks. I get what you’re saying about fluff, it’s a fine line between being informative and just talking to much. Thanks again for the comment.
