Volvo makes cars as safe as possible not to pass crash tests. For example the Toyota Corolla scored very well in crash tests, but when in a vehicle to vehicle crash test, it did much more poorly than the VW Jetta basically if the other vehicle was heavier the A pillar would have gave way. The 1st Gen XC90 absolutely aced the newly introduced small overlap test in 2014 with a platform that was launched in 2002 while newer cars failed the test because it wasn't tested before, so manufacturers didn't design for it. Besides making safer cars, Safety improvements from Sweden has pushed other manufacturers to also build safer cars and things like the 3 point seatbelt not being patented because Volvo wanted everyone to use it so they gave it away for free. Chinese or not, Volvo has always stuck to its core value of safety and as the slogan says Volvo for life
