    Thanks for this vid. Showing life on one of my favourite heritage lines. Not seen anything this old about BONESS. the difference in those days is certainly noticeable. Earliest i have seen has been the early 2000’s. What happened to those old steamers of those days. Did the track actually go around in a circle then ? Thanks for posting. Bob.

    Hi Guys, There seems to be some knowledgeable local lads on here from back in the day. When you have a minute watch the clip on this link below, also of Carstairs in 1990. A query if someone can answer please. 90040 comes in on load 15 with all MK3 sleepers and some day coaches on the end, a shunt occurs 04:08 and 7:17 and 90030 takes day coach portion separately. Any idea what the purpose of the detachment was as it was just the seated coaches? No motorails in consist so unsure what train it was. Looks too late for the IS that went mossend and too long for S07 which had 37 from Central by then i believe. Cheers ua-cam.com/video/pmExvHIYKIs/v-deo.htmlsi=SSR5D5UguBYEQJhJ

    257 Squadron was built at Brighton Works and completed in 1948 as one of the first of the batch produced under BR ownership. The locomotive was allocated to Dover Marine shed, principally to work the Continental Boat Trains to London. One of its main duties appears to have been the Night Ferry. It also worked on local services between the Kent Coast and Charing Cross and on one occasion it worked over the Tonbridge to Redhill line, believed to have been a first for a Bulleid light Pacific.

    Reminds me of when I met a friend at Euston one night, having decided to bash Class 47s in Sconnie Botland (I always gave myself 2 weeks off out of 20 weeks, every summer, from bashing the Yarmouth Saturday Only trains). When he told me that a pair Class 26s were working the 13.21 Edinburgh to Inverness via Ladybank. The gen said it was either 26 001 and 26 002 or 26 001 and 26 003. I needed all three locos, so I was a happy camper. But sadly, he needed just 26 003, and 26 001 and 26 002 produced, so he stayed put. The pair duly backed on at Waverley, but 26 002 blew up at Kirkcaldy, so 26 001 limped on, on her own. At Perth, the pair was replaced by 37 153. I alighted. The lads said surely, you need 37 153, she is a rare beastie. I replied I did not. I had already had 80+ Tractors, that was at least 80+ too many. I have even cabridden 37 405 from Edinburgh to Fort William on official duty, and 37 423 from Staines to London Bridge also on official duty. All in all, I have had 16 locos catch fire, and one loco that exploded (she put her carden shaft through the engine, as it had become detached from the generator). I have been on three trains that have derailed. I have been on 8 passenger trains with either no automatic train brake (it was an unfitted passenger train, in contravention of the Regulation of Railways Act 1889) or she had insufficient brake force (the brakes applied, but failed to retard the train due to a combination of train weight, downhill gradient and excessive speed, we were doing 60 mph in a 40 mph zone, the gradient was 1 in 40 for 42 miles and the train was Load 17. I alerted the signalman, after the train speed rose to 85 mph, despite four brake applications. The signalman rang out 7-5-5 Train Running Away in the Right Direction, and we passed 17 signals at danger, Blair Atholl to Perth). We also came down the summit at Moose Pass too quickly once on the Alaska Railroad. I have witnessed 2 bufferstop collisions (Liverpool Street and Great Yarmouth) and been on a further two trains that hit the stops (Romford and Kidderminster). And my middle name is Lucky. LOL ! Remember folks, railways are still the safest form of land transport. It is just I used to do over 20, 000 miles per annum. Love the Class 47 in ScotRail livery. Very smart.

    • @yesterdaystracks
      @yesterdaystracks Рік тому

      Loved reading that !!, you’re not the only one coming down from Inverness too fast the Stobart / Tesco train regularly ‘runs away’ and even jumped the rails once at Carrbridge in 2010 , must be scary tho passing 17 signals 😱

    • @vicsams4431
      @vicsams4431 Рік тому

      @@yesterdaystracks Luckily, all the northbound trains were put into the station loops, allowing us to run through the straights, and the facing point locks held. Blair Atholl points which are 15 mph, we took at 85 mph. Had we been routed via the loop, we might have ended up in the River Tilt, having mounted the platform and taken out the footbridge. At 2 x Class 26 + Load 17, the signalmen routed us in the straights. With 7-5-5 each signalman is required to put the road back in front of the driver to tell the driver he is trying to stop the train. Personally, if my brakes had a problem, I would prefer to see green signals ! Blair Atholl passed us to Killkrankie (who no doubt exclaimed "oh poo" or some ancient Scots expletive - use your imagination here) who passed us to Pitlochry (who said "I need a physical needs break") who passed us to Ballinluig (who said "What a day, to leave my spare underpants at home") who passed us to Dunkeld (who said "oh my" - they are posh in Dunkeld) who passed to Stanley Junction (who let out a small fart) and finally Perth power signalbox, which is where we came to rest on the level bit. The first to alight in Perth were the Chief Steward (holding a caving knife) and his assistant (holding a meat cleaver). They legged it up the platform to the cry of "Stitch that Jimmy", which is an ancient welcome in the Highlands. They had been serving pea and ham soup, and it fell over, and all the glasses and crockery came flying off the walls. Passengers were skating in scolding hot soup and impaling their behinds on sharp fragments. Once they had cleared up the buffet car, they presented the passengers with a dinner plate on which was a very small chipolata sausage and two Brussel sprouts. They announced to the passengers "This is what we removed from the driver at Perth. He won't be doing that again." That was the RESL's Easter Highlander in April 1984. The same tour that blew up a Class 25 at St Albans on the outward leg, and caught fire to a second Class 25, also at St Albans on the return leg. No I don't what St Albans has against Class 25s. The 00.05 Sheffield to St Pancras was duly given a Special Stop Order to pick up 1,100 passengers at 3 a.m. The Class 45 driver was a tad astonished to see the platform wedged. We were less happy, as she was only Load 5, and 17 into 5 don't go ! I ended up in the front vestibule of the front coach. To stop about 50 men from ending up in a tangled heap on the floor (we were all knackered), I opened the door window and stuck my head out into the Arctic air to wake myself up. Whoosh ! A bridge abutment appeared out of the darkness with no warning, and narrowly missed my nose. It is surprising how quickly you can wake from a 70 hour railtour, when you need to !! Happy days. I caught a taxi home from the station at 6 a.m. The taxi driver looked at the state I was in, and said "That must have been one hell of a party you went to lad."

    Night turns on BR pulling freight in the pitch dark following the lights , hoping the main generator wasn't going to flashover if you were near your weight limit. Happy days. 22-45 s in " I'm here Mr. Signalman." 😅 Driver informing signalman of identity of train through the one way signal telephone . No two way coms. in those days. Thanks for uploading , Temple Mills and Whitemoor is where I mostly went on my turns.I used to pick up the same style of oil tanks in the video from Bow but that was on a day turn and they were empty but had contained petroleum so they were still classed as dangerous goods anyway as the vapours were still inside .We had lots of work back in the late 70s and BR couldn't get enough staff even then because of the unsocial hours required expecially working freight traffic .
