'' turquoise '' - soft machine 1968.
~ One again i'm trying to bring to your attention groups that were well known in their locality and beyond and the group your about to hear was one of those...intially from the san luis obispo/ventura region where several of the members were ex various bands the corvairs/jer & the renegades/the chessmen/the english sound project and finally the better known captain speed...taken under the wing of promotor jim salzar who issued two singles by the band on his own label 'arcade records'...salzar intended to broaden his horizons as a concert promotor and so a move to santa barbara came about in '66 where he also opened a music store 'jim salzar music emporium' in oxnard...captain speed were along too as any concert he produced seemed to include them! lots of shows played with the dead/the doors/the airplane/country joe & the fish/the seeds/strawberry alarm clock/jimi hendrix etc etc...the were : bruce barlow/tim pearson/dan gustafson/steve smith (with nick hoffman soon replacing smith)/luther tatum with bill payne replacing tatum on keyboards...the group were now palying regualary at the popular 'earl warren show grounds' and again yet another big show with some major bands like the yardbirds & buffalo springfiled who at the show were paid $2500 with turquoise $150!!!! playing a show with the yardbirds (see poster) that group coined in $3000 while again turquoise hit the sum of $150! salzar was really hitting his stride locally with concert promotions with no one in real competition...vocalist pearson would pass away by the end of '67/beginning of '68 of drug problems so a name change was in order and 'turquoise' it was (and no drug conatations to boot!)..soon an album was called for with production duties by that man about los angeles kim fowley which has remained unreleased till now with that great spainish company 'guerssen records' doing a fine job with the recordings released as 'the return of captain speed turquoise' 2025 and if your enjoying what you hear check it out.... barlow would go onto comander cody & payne to little feat...correction/additions warmly welcomed...

The Final Solution played a mostly excellent set at The Ark" in Sausalito on December 26, 1966. "Misty Mind," (with a 3/4 guitar solo by John Yager) "If You Want," and "Nothing to Fear Part 2" were standouts.

The Final Solution (with Jerry Slick on the drums) played inside for the opening of The Fox Plaza in San Francisco--really great acoustics, but I don't know if this was taped; They were taped, however, when they played at "The Ark:" in Sausalito, a paddle wheel shaped steam boat restaurant now long gone...

@sfscene7253 July 16, 1966 we auditioned for Mainstream Records, and I think Wally Heider. We signed a six month contract. Big Brother and Wildflower also auditioned that summer there. We played "All Good Things" and "My Room's on Fire" (both written both by John Yager), "Live Love" and "Walking Alone" (both written by Ernie Fosselius), "The Time is Here and Now" (by Bob Knickerbocker and Ernie) and "If You Want" (by John Yager and John Chance). In August they told us to pick four of those to record. (It was in 1969 that "Walking Alone" became my first ever instrumental arrangement I wrote for my new 7 piece group "The New Age Band." Later in the 70s I did two more Final Solution scorings when the group expanded to 12 people.) Anyway, when the time came for us to record, we were living in Virginia City and playing at the Red Dog. We didn't have the money or transportation to go, so we never made it to LA. Perhaps in a different multiverse we did. It turns out we also auditioned for "Bobbie" at Golden Gate Records, playing ten songs on July 29. I think if we go through a worm hole near Saturn we can find them. As Bob and Ernie were friends of Ron Nagle (of "The Mystery Trend"), both versions of the Final Solution played outdoors at the San Francisco Art Institute "occasionally."

Since I was a student at SF State and was usually at school, most of the "filmed' footage of the Solution features Don Johns (wearing shades and a white lab coat) as me. "Just Like Gold" is by John Yager-- whom we called "The Kid" since he was 16 at the time he joined the group, but had long before graduated from high school (!). He was the main vocalist, and second guitar. The song totally fits Bob Knickerbocker and Ernie Fosselius's nihilistic visions....P.S. The poster you see above was a joke birthday gift from Gary Tufts that Ernie and Don Johns drew for me. We have to go to an alternate universe to see this concert... (by John Chance, the drummer)

@ Their story in general is somewhat remarkable. A New York kid blessed with musical and poetic talent, on TV at an early age, and fully recognized as an integral member of Beat poetry culture in the SF Bay Area. Incorporated prose into jazz compositions, and even into his groovy Serpent Power music with Tina and the boys. Not to mention her angelic voice and, ultimately, a mother’s transition into children’s songs. And the tragedy of her passing at an early age. They had a daughter who went on to have her own singing career, a nice way to honor Tina.
