Standing together for Lake Knox
Please help us #SaveLakeKnox. Home to endangered and threatened species, including the iconic Blue-billed duck, the State Government intends to fill in Lake Knox, and build over 450 dwellings at the site. Hear from passionate community members from this grassroots Victorian campaign to save our Lake.
The addition of the new dwellings into the current vacant public land, and the destruction of this deep water asset, will seal the fate of Blue-billed Ducks in Knox, displacing another threatened species for short term financial profit.
Their plan is scientifically questionable, and their ecological guarantees are unfounded. The State Government lacks expertise to replace habitat, and the project has no KPI or resourcing.
Dedicated citizen scientists have been monitoring Lake Knox for over 2 years. Their observations of species at Lake Knox now number 88, which include other significant species such as Eastern Long neck turtles, Pelican, Black Swan and Hardhead Duck. This data has been openly shared with all parties involved with the proposed development and added to various public databases.
So conclusive is the evidence obtained by the community and other interested Ecologists, that the protection of Lake Knox had been endorsed by various organizations such as The Jane Goodall Institute Australia, Wildlife Victoria, Environment Victoria, Australian Conservation Foundation, Greenpeace Australia, Australian Wildlife Protection Council, For the Love of Wildlife, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, and the Australian Animal Protection Society.
It is difficult to see logic behind a development that will take from community rather than add? This denial of science, placing profit above the environment and habitat destruction of a Threatened species which has bred successfully at Lake Knox, is a stance that we the wider community need to call out.

We’ve been wanting to tell the story of our short finned eels ever since a major pollution event hit Dandenong Creek. This short film touches on their amazing lifecycle, what the eels meant to our indigenous nations, and how urbanisation is affecting them. Visit our website for more information: www.ffdc.org.au

shocking and disgusting corporations and people are allowed to pollute and escape liability. Makes me really angry Council and State Government are so pathetic in their response.
1990s caught 4 in doveton creek near dandenong i put in Brine salt 2/3days with a dash lemon then smoked it with Rosemary in a wok 1hr slow on gas stove it was yummy i would like to try this again soon
i lived in seaford and often saw eel`s = in the creek and an old bloke stopped and said the eel`s were making the adjustment from salt to fresh water ! about 3ft
we need to stop over development of housing along the creek, massive town houses and apartments, high rise ect means no back yards, no green space, this means more concrete hard surface ect and polluted storm water entering the creek
women have to set the nets & only men have the spears? that's a bit sexist.
What kind of insecticide did they find ?
Another pretend abbo
Yeah, but you're not a pretend dickhead. You're the real thing!!
Are there still eels in Dandenong creek now?
Certainly are :) We wouldn't know how many, but they have been seen in the creek in various locations over the past year, and in the tributaries too
Next up "The Chipmunks of My Back Yard"
This is a wonderful video. Great to learn about the sustainable fish traps in the past. I hope the bad pollution doesn't ever happen again.
Urban run off! An environmental disaster. Great work people! Thank you.
Carpet cleaning companies regularly pull up on the side of the road and dump their soap water into the storm water drains I've called them in before on multiple occasions, the industry is rife with them dumping surfactants
Greatly meaningful work
Wow... I am to Eel fishing world fastest 👍
Awesome
Love the video. Can you fish in the Dandenong Creek?
You can but it is not recommended due to the high levels of pollution
Deutsch übersetzt
They taste good
First step don't place drains that feed into creeks and rivers...it's really that. Simple! No need to test the water for contamination as we all know it's contaminated regardless and the surviving species have to survive in it. There's a reason why it's banned to swim in it. Where ever you find humans in large populations you find waste. We really need to move back to a simpler way of life how our ancestors used to live.
Easily the best piece I have seen on eel preservation . Great work. Regards Greg UK.
Unique, endangered species: we need to protect it & Lake Knox.
Use to catch eels at the back of Myuna Farm heading towards Motown Doveton
Well spoken and well delivered, l hope the government listens to reason. As the video says we need these spaces dearly.
What a brilliant video about an awful event - the imminent destruction of Lake Knox, an environmental jewel in Melbourne's East.
Great video and fantastic to see the community re-engaging with our local waterways.
Peter Hitchiner said "there was a lovely bubble bath display in Merri creek today" when this happens there last year People are so pathetic
99.9% of all the people in the world are too self centred to care about the real world
can you find mussels or pearls in the Dandenong creek?
No mussels or pearls in Dandenong Creek
Did there use to be freshwater mussels?
Does the Dandenong Creek flow through to Boggy Creek ( Near Ballarto Road ! and Flora and Fauna Park to the Sea?
Hey Mithrani, no, Dandenong Creek flows into the Patterson River, just North of Boggy Creek; Boggy Creek flows into Kananook Creek, then out into the Bay.
Great video - the health of our waterways is so important so support the life within them. The pollution events are disappointing and tragic for the eels and other fish in there. I wish these insecticides were not available. I love the graphics at the beginning, seeing all the eels in such clear water and the care shown by First Friends. I wonder where the best spot is along Dandenong Creek to see the eels.
they're so beautiful!
excellent
Good work.
The creek is a great asset. Love the video.
Love your work
This is so well done, thank you. I remember the awful pollution event and it's devastating to see the aftermath. Every creature is so important, and people need to realise the terrible impact they can make 'downstream' everywhere!
Freshwater bodies like the creek are home to thousands of species. The eel has been part of this habitat for thousands of years, and embedded in aboriginal culture. We should coexist with nature and protect biodiversity, as a key element to our own survival. Applause to those involved in the making of this video.
Awesome video by the Friends of Dandenong Creek. Superb effort! Hope this video will create an awareness of the importance of our Creek.
Its a terrific story. Another example of why we need to protect these wonderful ecosystems
fantastic
What a great short film... it put a shiver up my spine. We have to get renewed focus on these spaces, they can offer us so much.
What an amazing story - love your eel logo too
