At 14 seconds. What actually caused that to happen? Is it a issue for skydiving too? Or just paragliding. Everything looked perfectly smooth until it wasnt.
It was an siv clinic to practice difficult paragliding maneuvers over a relatively safe landing (lake). The maneuver I did that caused everything to fuck up is called a full stall. Normally it would be very very bad to stall your glider but in certain circumstances it could help resolve some issues, the catch is you basically go into a backwards skydive while pulling the maneuver. I had never tried it before and was frankly terrified. If I had committed all the way like I should have it wouldnt have wrapped under my foot, but I let up too early. Basically I bitched out but I'll get it next time I go to an siv. I don't skydive but to the best of my knowledge something this would never happen unless you fucked up a lot of things in a lot of ways.
@@saxtonhine4843 thanks for clearing that up. I'm sooo bored living in FL. Traveling to Ireland, or Iceland is fun, but expensive. I recently went snowboarding a couple weeks ago and fell in love. There's sky diving 40 minutes away from me. So that's something I can do every couple weeks for a rush. But honestly I'm terrified lol. @@respond_code3 lol we sound very very alike. I'm in San Diego and am in basically the same boat. Love snowboarding but the closest serious mountain is like 8 hours away, lots of scuba but not entirely my cup of tea, then then there's sky sports which I'm terrified of. The biggest take away I've gotten from flying for a few years is that the vast vast majority of accidents happen because of pilot error. Things don't typically just go wrong by themselves and when they do it's usually so minor that just keeping composure and not doing anything will resolve the issue by itself. The more confident in yourself you are the more safe fun you will have. The less confidant you are the more likely you are to die or kill someone else. If it makes you feel any better all the people I've seen fall out of the air and die on the ground haven't been coherent enough after impact to look like they could process the pain very much.
Is it common for people to get tangled up and drown because of the cords? That is the stuff of nightmares. I’ve always wondered if you hit the water at a slow speed and survived would you just float or would the parachute and harness and cords drag you underwater. Please explain.

In this case I would have left the main wing alone, it was clearly not down-planing and could only assist in decreasing an already bad decsent rate. You're very very lucky.
Just thinking that I would try to loose the shoots just before entering the water and just hope that the water landing doesn't kill me. The thought of struggling with all those ropes and shoots under water is the thing of nightmares.
Unfortunately most paraglider systems do not have a cut away system or a sprung loaded reserve. This tangled mess of lines is the result. Hopefully they will manufacture these kites with modern life saving systems like skydivers have, rather than reserve parachutes that were last seen in WW1.
Truth Is In Nature not sure cause I’m a skydiver, not a paragliding pilot but I’d guess it probably comes down to the pretty high cost of a ram air reserve chute system.
"modern life saving system like skydivers have..." 'sprung loaded reserve... " you my friend should not comment on an activety you clearly don't participate in.
@@Aurora..Borealis Sorry, but one of us has no clue. I'm sure that a reserve stuffed into a day sack is fine for para gliders, but it wouldn't get past the safety officer at a drop zone.
THAT was FREAKING TERRIFYING. I think that was the biggest CF I've ever seen. You sound like you got a little panicked early on, and that caused more problems. You kept working and working it though, and at least got a survivable configuration up above you. Never give up! Man, I was 40 gauge just WATCHING. All that altitude was DEFINITELY your friend on that one. I'm thinking about doing PPG so I'm watching these to figure out everything I can about emergency actions. I learned at least three things from this one. One of the main ones is if your chute is partially open, you are NOT totally falling like a rock and have some time from significant altitude (obviously keeping an eye on the altitude) to try to get things worked out. I don't know if I'd have the guts to go back up if I'd gone through that one personally. Did you? If so, stay safe man.
To be totally honest it shook me up for awhile. I kept telling myself that it didn't affect me ut it definently put a weird mental block in my head. I also climb a lot and it affected my risk taking skills climbing for awhile. I've got my head back together now and have been flying a few times since. I plan on going back to every day flying when work permits. There is a lot to be said for mental health prior to something like this. Idk how to best deal with it, but pretending it didn't happen probably did more damage then good at the time. Also, when you throw the reserve remember its floppy. I pulled it out and it flopped over in my hand in a way that didn't facilitate throwing it as well as it could have. I'd really sit in a hanging harness and throw it a few times, as annoying as that sounds. Finding out these fine details in the air was shitty lol.
Those were my friends on the boat. They knew shit was going down from the second my reserve throw went bad. Couldn't have asked for a better crew of guys.
Then ur probably doing the same thing the next weekend? Or still today? Then u expect sympathy when it happens again....nope...unless we are at war and troops need to be in a combat zone, parachuting, or anything else is your own damn fault
Wow...that was a long fall to be thinking how much that sucked... I agree with the (bad) throw...always....down and behind you!. There is enough pressure on the lines to snap your neck on the inflation or enough residual pressure to strangle you if that gets around your neck on the way down..... Seriously charmed ......
The reserve deployed directly after you pulled the container out of your harness? That sucks man, probably with a throw in the good direction it would have gone better. Allthough its difficult to find a good direction if you are rotating and its probably dependent on kind of rotation(spiral, sat or spin), I think sat autorotation most difficult (throw very hard in direction of rotation and upwards? I think that reserv is then above the wing when they meet). Nice video
