3 verginas climb to the top of Greece with no guide - Mount Olympus
Переглядів 3643 місяці тому
We flew from London to Thessaloniki to climb from a beach at the foot of Mt. Olympus (Όλυμπος) to the summit at 2,918m - Greece's highest point. The journey does not go to plan when we discover the route we'd selected was closed and the bridges required to cross the river at various stages have been washed away! We did however discover a new beer we're all fans of. The route was spectacularly p...
Conquering Kilimanjaro: My 6-Day Adventure to Africa's Highest Peak with Intrepid - Marangu Route
Переглядів 2,9 тис.8 місяців тому
In January 2024, I climbed Kilimanjaro with my friend Matt. I booked it not knowing what to expect from a climb in January, and we were the only 2 people in the group trip we'd booked. Being a pretty quiet time on the mountain and uncommon time to summit, I recorded this video to give others an insight in to what the experience is like, using the Marangu route across 6 days. Any questions, plea...

Having hiked the 3 big hills in the UK, my girlfriend and I set about looking for our next big hill to walk up. Naturally, I sought out the biggest we could feasibly walk up in a weekend and this video documents our trip, and experience on the mountain. The route we took is the 040, starting in Playa del Socorro, walking south to the summit. It's a 28km route up, with 4,000 meters of elevation ...

Summiting Mount Toubkal: A 2-Day Trek Through Morocco's Majestic High Atlas
This Channel is criminally underrated. Some of the Best put together content I’ve seen by far and when I actually checked how many subs you had I was shocked expected atleast 100k😂
Thanks, appreciate this! Not sure how to get the videos into the algorithm more. Better title and thumbnails? Who knows haha. It’ll happen naturally!
Lost it at the jizz curd 😂 Fascinating content mate!
Another great video. Lizzie content is appreciated and would appreciate more 🙏🏽 ALSO, DID U TAKE A DRONE??????
Hahaha - I’m glad the subtle drone use was noticed!! We’ll get some good content from Oz. Shark dive 👀
Great to see another video Luke! Those were some brutal hiking statistics 😅😅 Highly recommend trying out some via ferrata in the Dolomites!! I've absolutely loved it, exciting in a different way to summiting big mountains 🧗♀️
Thanks! Funny you say this. A colleague just got back and said it was amazing! I must plan a trip :) Balkans 3 peaks challenge next week!
I second the 3 peaks comment. Should be a walk in the park 🚶🏻♂️🚶🏻♂️🚶🏻♂️
You’re coming with me mate!
Great video. Thank you.
Good luck with the climb!
W Trek would be the dream one!
I reckon Aconcagua if I’m gonna go to South America. Gotta go big right.
Maybe see if you can complete the 3 peak challenge in 24 hours, unless you’ve already accomplished that!
Fair shout mate! Local challenge too… wanna come with me?!
I want to take my girls (10 and 12) on the hike from route number 10 and take the cable car down. I work out everyday so I feel fit. My 12 year old has a warrior's heart. I am wondering if it will be too difficult for my 10 year old. They had no issue in the Dolomites (Tre Cime) but that was only 2700 meters. I climbed Mt Evans on my bike decade plus ago at 4300 meters so I understand how the difficulty of breathing will progress while also battling fatique over 5-6 hours hiking. We hike every Sunday (8-13 km) but it is all flat and sea level. I know it is hard to give your opinion, but how hard would it be (we aren't starting at the sea)? Does the smell of sulfur make the breathing much harder? I think we would be starting near the parking near where the cable car is. We would take that down.
Hey - for me I found the breathing noticeably harder above 3000m. I think in my case this was more a function of the 25km I had in the legs prior to this and the dehydration and poor fuelling etc. Given you guys would be starting higher up the mountain you’d certainly be fresher and you’d be able to pace it out to the top with suitable fuel and water. Make sure to get a summit pass and of course check the time the cable car closes ;). It also sounds like you’re all incredibly fit so should have no challenge in my mind doing this - providing you take it steady and listen to your bodies. The smell was fine and not an issue at all - however this may have been offset by how we smelled haha.
Wicked video! 💥
Eyy cheers pal.
Great work!
Cheers man!
Great video Lukie, loved it you living the best life ! Well done from Big Luke !!!!!!!!
Eyyyy cheers uncle Lukey!!
Awesome Video! Thanks for sharing!
Great video Luke! Those cloud inversions were beautiful 😍I enjoyed watching your Toubkal video before I did it myself and now I think I'll have to do Kilimanjaro
Thanks! Ha, does this mean I’m now an influencer!? I see you’ve posted a video about Toubkal - I’ll give it a watch see how it looks this time of year, great place hey. Kilimanjaro was excellent, but I think I downplayed the impact of altitude on me in the video. We recorded that intro about 6x! But I’d definitely recommend it. Amazing part of the world.
@@Luke_Duggan I give you permission to adopt the title 😂 Well as you'll see in the video, the conditions weren't quite as we were expecting, but still amazing! Altitude sickness is definitely a concern, but I think you did one of the shorter routes? Maybe I should consider a longer one. Also interested in Everest Base Camp but apprehensive for the same reason!
We did yes and it’s considered the easiest route because of the huts and it’s quite short. I still can’t say if how I felt was due to the malaria tablets, the altitude or the D&V… so I need to do another higher one! Peak Lenin would be cool. Everest Base camp looks like an excellent trek, and it’s quite affordable…
@@Luke_Duggan Oh wow Peak Lenin would be amazing, definitely a bit higher than I'm thinking of going just yet, but maybe one day 😂 a bit more off the beaten track than Kili or EBC as well, would be a very cool area to visit. Will be interested if you make a video!
Loved the video - cant wait to see whats next!
Great video. I want to go so bad
Great video, thanks for making the time to put it together. I'm planning on doing the same thing in April, really excited about it! Can you share a bit more info about what time you started, and how long it finally took you? I noticed that you also did it in April, so if there are any things you would have done differently, then i'd be happy to hear it. Thanks!
Cheers! Certainly, we started at 0900 on Playa Del Socorro. We arrived at the summit for 1630 and the cable car for 1745, it then took us about another 2hrs to jog down to the car park ( where we had managed to arrange for a taxi to meet us. If I were to do it again I’d triple check the cable car times. take a bit more food in case of any incidents and also take some ibuprofen to stave off the headache from the altitude that’s quite common given the rate of ascent. We drank 1L per 500m so definitely be sure to carry a lot of water also. Good luck and enjoy it, it is very beautiful.
so epic pal
Ah thanks mate! Hope all’s well in the US! 👨🏻🚒
Loving it thank you mate!@@Luke_Duggan
Top notch editing as always mate. I’m amazed at how professional looking you make all of your videos.
Thanks man! Much appreciated. Need to work on telling shorter stories too I think.
Great video, really enjoyed it. You made it like I was with you, which is handy as I feel I don't have to do it myself now!
Well done Luke. DNF at 32k
Just watched your video. It was such a hot day, definitely a challenging run! Doing it / something similar this year?
@@Luke_Duggan Hi Luke. Yeh considering how cold it was in the morning and the weeks leading up to it. I'm doing utmb Snowdonia May and thinking of doing the Jurassic coast challenge the week after. What ones are you going to do?
@@outinthesun Snowdon in May should be lovely, great part of the UK - good luck with the run! I've not got anything in the diary yet. Just back from Kilimanjaro, faffing about with the edit of that at the moment. Will book something in soon enough...!
Hi, booked to go to mt Triglav in April. I just wanted to know would you recommend a guide? Also what did you film this on? Great video!
Hello! Yes, I’d absolutely recommend reaching out to Mitja actually, he was excellent - knows the mountain like the back of his hand and goes at whatever pace you want. Not sure on conditions in April but worth reaching out to Mitja for sure. I filmed this on a GoPro hero 7 black and a Nikon Z5 and the 3D camera was a Insta360 X3.
Hope next time will be no any failure good luck
Great video. Thanks for taking the efforts of filming! I'm hoping to do it in March-April 2024. Is it common to have snow on the route at this time of the year? I'm really surprised that your guide made you climb down that exposed snowy route without crampons and ice axe!
Hello! We did it on the 23rd of April and you can see there is some snow, according to our guides at the time this is typical. When we climbed down we were wearing crampons, and we had poles to arrest in case we slipped. I think the wide lens of the GoPro also exaggerates the gradient perhaps! Don’t get me wrong it is steep but not dangerously so, in my opinion. Have a great time sir!
Excellent video! Mitja is an amazing guide. My friend and I went to Triglav on November 26, 2023. The weather was horrible except on that day, so we had to summit and go all the way down in one go. It would've been much more difficult had Mitja not been there.
Oh fantastic! That must have been a long day in the mountain, nice to get back to the hut to warm up I imagine! Congratulations, it’s a beautiful climb :)
Oh no what a disaster- glad you both were able to (somewhat) stay positive throughout!
Just about!!
Didn’t realise how rogue that climb got 😂
You coming next time tho yeah? It's actually a stunning cycle ride to I reckon - not this route, but the road up must be mega. Above the clouds etc...
I liked that in the video you said that it was challenging and "you have to be ready for it and train for it", because nowadays you hear less and less of that from people who conquer the top of the mountain - they just recommend it because they loved it so much, but they forget the fact how deadly mountains can be if you are not mentally and physically prepared, especially in Slovenia, where (too) many accidents occur every year. It's nice to see responsible foreigners who get a guide for such a climb. Congratulations on summiting! Greetings from Slovenia! :)
Thank you, very kind of you to say. We just recorded our genuine views right after the climb - full of adrenaline and chilled to the bone 😝. It’s certainly not something to be underestimated. Great to have Mitja there to safely lead us up!
Great video, awesome scenes! Your camera qual is INSANE 🤩🤩🔥
😂 thanks mega fan!! You’re coming on the next mountain hike ok.
important question, did you get spanked at the top
Hahaha. I had to google this and I am very sorry to report that no this did not feature in our trip. Will have to come back.
Great video - good for you blasting out for a weekend. Now, my auntie comment - wear a bandana or beenie or cap on your head. UV is not the friend of skin on our head :)
Haha! Noted, adds to basket… cheers.
If you haven't been any higher than Triglav, I recommend you Mont Blanc, to see and feel some altitude. Kilimandzaro is to expensive for just 10 days of hiking. About 4000€ per person. After Mont Blanc you can try peak in Kirgisistan called Pik Razdelnaya. Only 50m above camp 3 on 6100m. This is also the track to Pik Lenin 7134m. With appropriate Acclimatization you'll need 12 days to the 6150m and back to the city and airport. Costs: around 1600€ all inclusive.
Thanks! I only really have January free, and so I’m quite limited on where to go. I would love to do Mont Blanc and Lenin Peak at some stage in my life. Hopefully I can record it and put it up here. I’m thinking Kilimanjaro, because I can combine it with a safari perhaps. Plus there’s a few good last minute deals about. Highest I’ve been Toubkal - again a hike but went up to 4,200m where I could feel the altitude a bit. There’s a video of that if you’re interested! Cheers.
Beautiful video, great weather and visibility! 👌 When I loaded my UA-cam page now you were up there among the recommendations so I decided to check it out. Looks like algorithm knows I like hiking and Julian Alps (of course) and sometimes works even for small creators haha It just needs to be stated that this obviously early winter ascent, or more precisely even late autumn (although feels like winter of course), without much snow. Soon it will become much more demanding, when snow covers it all, and rocks, hand rails, pegs and steel ropes disappear. Then it becomes 70° sheer snowy side, which is only for experienced climbers
Thanks! And yes very definitely an early winter climb. I’ve seen some of the photos of the summit in peak winter and the Aljaž Tower is totally buried in snow. Must be a crazy climb when it’s like that.
Hi @AleksandarGospic The main thing that changes in winter with more snow is the approach till the hut. It can be more dangerous becaouse of avalancehs and it is more chalenging, as the snow covers the valley also. It means you fall through the snow more plus the approach is 1,5 hours longer(valley floor) in each direction. The top of Triglav doesn't change much through the winter, as the snow gets blown of. What you see on the video stays more or less the same thruout the all winter. Maybe some more cables get covered on the approach till small Triglav, the ridge cables are more or less out. The whole tower and cables get covered in May, when the snow that falls is wetter and sticks on the ridge. And it never gets 70° steep, if you take out your phone and messure the inclination you see it is never much over 50°, but the exposure gives you the feeling of sheer drop😃 Regards, Mitja, guide from the movie
Nice climb! Glad you've visited our small piece of paradise. To Kredarica you've climbed 1500m as you've started at 1000m elevation and not the sea level ;-)
Thanks! It's a beautiful place, we really enjoyed it! And yes - great spot, I did correct Terry but cut it from the edit as I sounded like a pedant :D. A good hike from sea-level to a high peak is in Tenerife, Teide, its called the 0-4-0 trial, sea-level to 3718m and back. I have done it, will have to piece a video together on it. Welcome your suggestions on any other good climbs!
What a view! You guys got a nice day :)
The best! We were lucky.
Nice Luke! we did Huayna Potosí in Bolivia which might be up your street
Ah wow that’s >6000m! Mental. Didn’t know you’d done that! Have pick your brains on that at some point.
Wow. What a great way to spend a weekend.
😑
Nice one
Came here after seeing the news about Dafydd this morning. Hope he’s ok. Good luck to him.
He's doing great, the cut has healed up now and he is just south of western Australia. You can track his progress, along with his diary entires here: forecast.predictwind.com/tracking/display/SV-Bendigedig/ Thanks for your support, Luke.
Nice video and nice editing. THANKS. I was there 3 times and it was amazing.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video. You've definitely inspired me to go climb it. Keep up the good work!
Thanks! Best of luck for it - it’s great fun. I’m thinking of doing Kazbek next in Georgia…
Wow I’m more interested in his partners views on this if that’s his partner? I’m in a similar situation as my Girlfriend is doing humanitarian nurse work and wants to do more which means possibly a 6 months to 10 months apart it’s nearly split us up but I’m trying to be supportive. As a sailor myself I’m wondering weather to go do my own solo Accross the Atlantic while she’s away
Hi - I spoke to Dafydd’s partner and she said: “Oh heck! It all depends on the relationship, I want him to follow his dream (and come back). I will keep as busy as possible”. If keeping busy for you means doing a solo adventure like this too, then I wish you all the best for it! I’m sure it’d be an experience to remember.
Great filming and well presented, I’m a subscriber !
Great Video. Good interview and well produced. Regards Ken
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for the video. Very enjoyable. We look forward to following his progress via your videos and his on board AIS transmissions.
Awesome, thank you!
Hi, do you have to bring your own sleeping bag to the refuge or does it have duvets?
Hello, they recommended that we did but to be honest, you don’t sleep well there and I just slept in my clothes and jacket. There’s no duvet’s supplied at the refuge.
Would love to know about your recovery process! Diet, back to training, stretching, etc. Thanks and congrats!
Thanks man! Perhaps I can do a video on my training plan and stuff.
which company did you book through? Looks class, keen to do it this year!
This was through Get Your Guide, here’s the link: www.getyourguide.co.uk/atlas-mountains-l7918/mt-toubkal-ascent-express-trek-2-days-1-nights-t278302/?visitor_id=P9548HLO2145HUSLH9SKUN6ES3XTV56Y
Great video, what time of year was this?
Cheers! We did this in mid-April 2023.
@@Luke_Duggan Nice we are there in September, just wondering about the snow / ice in the valley towards the top.. I’m guessing most will be gone by September 🤷🏻♂️
@@nigelcongram7904 Excellent! The guides that we had said that September / October are the best months for it, because you can do it without crampons - bit less of a hassle. It's a great trip, enjoy it!
Hey! I do this in just under a week now and very nervously excited. The stars! I can't wait for that at the refuge. One question, are the head torches supplied ? Can you rent? Haha thanks amazing.
Hi! It’s a real adventure, I’m sure you’ll have a great time. The head torches, poles, crampons and even coats are all available to hire in Imlil. You have the option to load the equipment on a mule if you don’t want to carry it. I think for the poles and crampons I hired it was 500 dirham.
