Bratz was the first time I saw black girls really represented and included and not just Barbie’s “black” friend.

"if you are not Caucasian you're probably going to struggle to identify with Barbie" Wrong! Barbie has been loved and cherished all throughout the globe, Barbie it's not about the color she is or her gender, Barbie is a universal open concept/fantasy. It is not because you are a guy that you cant identify with her. The same way many boys do love her, want to play with her and identity with her femininity, fantasy and utopian vibezzz is the same way that any race can identify with her. Your comment is rooted in white shame

I loved Barbie as a little girl and my mom bought me lots of them. She hated Bratz dolls and bought me only one of them as she thought they were too oversexualized. Now I find myself getting into Bratz at as an adult. Perhaps because I'm not a little girl anymore and I want to find my own styles, maybe?

I was so obsessed with bratz, barbie just didnt connect to me, the denim, aesthetics look, and the girls personalities being so different and even how diverse they looked, it just pulled me in so much more, I could see strong sisterhood with different girls most girls in my school preferred Bratz too, im from the UK, we all had doll and bartz pencil cases and things, no surprise to see it was outselling barbie I could see it

I agree with you on some points, like the Bratz’s personalities being more realistic. However I still believe it’s good to have a character who teaches moral lessons , like Barbie. It’s fine that you like bratz more, I just think we need a good mix of those two different kinds of character. The relatable one and the one who’s a good role model.

I wouldn't say Bratz are necessarily better but definitely just as iconic as Barbie. Barbie is still the number 1 doll. And it's not an opinion, it's actually a fact. Based on metrics. But Bratz have changed the game and open doors. They ramain consistent. Barbie has come a long way too though. I personally love them both! Bratz should definitely be respected because they are iconic regardless!

  • @TheOfficialPrettyPrincess

I don’t understand why Barbie fans get so distraught when people talk about liking Bratz more. Both sides have negative things to say about eachother, it’s highly expected, but if people know they are going to be offended by a video with a title telling them Bratz is better than Barbie then why watch? Lol

I collect Silkstone Barbies. They are adult collector dolls with head molds from the 60s and updated make-up. I love them! I would pass through the doll isle at Walmart and notice the cute Bratz dolls. When the movie Bratz came out, I was floored!!!! I bought Jade right away! It started with her. I missed out on the most beautiful Bratz, the Genie Magic. I managed to buy 4 of them some years later! I never liked the 80s- 90s Barbies because they're too bland-looking.

There was diversity in Barbie, it's not just ''pink dresses'' and ''hyper femininity'', as some of the comments are claiming (bashing hyper femininity is misogyny in itself to me). In the late 60s Mattel did introduce the first black Barbie, most of their collections had a black Barbie aswell, including their iconic yearly Christmas Holiday Barbie. They just weren't as diverse/inclusive as Bratz. Us Asians, Latinas, Middle Easterners etc def weren't represented but most of us kids growing up didn''t care about that stuff, we loved Barbie for her pretty outfits and pretty hair and her versatility, Barbie wasn't one-dimensional. And personal opinions aside, Barbie's cultural impact, legacy and iconic status is undeniable, and way more profound than Bratz. To us Millennials Barbie is very special cause she was a huge part of our childhood growing up. Bratz was too and I like both but i personally prefer Barbie over Bratz, imo Bratz was very much of it's time with mainly just y2k teen-y fashion, whereas Barbie is very timeless and fashion-wise way more versatile.

I believe Barbie was better (don't get me wrong, they had more time to do more variations) but Mattel did amazing back in the late 90s and 00s with all the games they released showing Barbie working in different fields (marine biologist, detective chasing a kidnapper, horserider, etc.) I believe that changed a bit, Bratz focused more only on, well, fashion. While Bratz had more range of colours and fashion styles. Barbie's games (if you choose the mattel detective one) has her tech friend who is also in a wheelchair, was actually nice for a change to show more characters, she is also the one that rescues Ken. I know Barbie also faced many scandals that are horryfying earlier on due to also being a product of their time. But she also had every profession ever and in the games she is a pretty active character that actual does actual stuff. I don't agree the 90s barbie were all about poise, soft femininity and pink, because she had amazing roles in games being a badass character. But, again, that's a meta of the whole franchise and I could understand how the "barbiecore" was presented as that kind of femininity to some, because barbie made the cliché first and then disrupted it.

As a kid I always wanted Bratz toys because they seemed much cooler and chic compared to their Barbie counterpart. But as I grew older, something about the Bratz model physique just threw me off. The big eyes and massive lips along with the very non-existent nose made them seem just really out there. Sure they had more skin colour variety than Barbie but they had these unattainable features that sort of played into my insecurities, especially the tiny noses.

I love this video essay. Great points. I also like that most of MGA doll lines have similar vibe with Bratz, they are bold, edgy and super high fashion, however, I am just thinking, why the value of Bratz dolls are not that high as Barbies, I dunno if it is just here in Ph.

Both cartoons are about different things and peoples life so to people who kept talking about how barbie is just a plastic girl fake dream, no..everyone have different life,we experience different things.its not like barbie creator says that girls have to live this way, this way is more right or wrong, they just make a cartoon and yall think too much about it and make speculations. Both are so fun for me and have their own ways

My mom didn't want me playing with dolls that didn't look like me (which hurt as a child but I kind of get it now) so Barbie was off limits, I could have the black characters but when I looked at them it was like barbie that they painted brown and maybe changed the clothing scheme. It wasn't a new identity, it was a brown version of barbie. VS bratz that had sasha who looked somewhat like me (a lot more than barbie did at least). I loved yasmine the most, and had so many yasmine dolls but I had the other girls as well and even some of the boys. I loved the fashion and even had the game on my DS. The only barbies I owned were gifted it to me.

As a younger girl, i loved Barbie and the Barbie movies and dolls for their fairytale charm. As I got older, I loved Bratz (and MyScene) more because they better represented the styles and fashion I saw in older girls and aspired to emulate. (Polly pocket also has my heart)

I genuinely think the Bratz show is superior to any Barbie movie. I recently rewatched it for nostalgia purposes and the amount of laughs it got out of me was absurd. There's a reason so many of the clips have become memes. Truly ahead of its time.

I love both the Barbie and Bratz form of femininity. Barbie is a softer more whimsical and wholesome and individually focused vibe. The Bratz were modern, edgy, mature and more about girl group expression if that makes sense.

I would have to say that I was more on both sides as a kid. now in dolls,i was a barbie child but i think thats cause that was the only thing that was selling (at least where my family would be getting them) so i would be getting the barbie dolls, but i loved watching the bratz movies as well as the barbie movies.however i never had the dvd's of the bratz other than the bratz fairytale one. i did have more barbie movies but i think it was around 5-10 of them though. all-in-all i was on both sides of the doll feud as a child
