Pourquoi faire simple quand on peut faire compliqué, c'est une usine à gaz.
What make/model of sailboat is that there?
My big sailboat is a 97 Bayliner Buccaneer 26. The smaller one is a 74 Ensenada 20
Ha I had an Ensenada 20 during 1985 until 1994 it was even the same color. I didn’t appreciate that boat enough but I didn’t trailer it because it was always at a dock. We had a lot of fun and it sailed very well. This isn’t a boat for the foul weather we had on Lake Erie but we also enjoyed plenty of great weather. Raising the mast was a two person job I would lift the mast in its pivot and the crew would fasten the fore stay. I did rig the jib halyard so once I’d lift it high enough I’d cleat the halyard then reposition myself on the canon top to lift it the rest of the way. I also made stair steps to climb from the cockpit sole to the cabin top while lifting the last. It wasn’t easy.
So I’ve had subscribers asking for dimensions. Here goes, the longer pieces of tubing are in place of the original side stays and are 6 ft long. The front A frame is 5 ft long. It is attached to the mast about 16 inches from the base of the mast. That A frame was fastened to the deck last. I first tested the location by strapping a long board to the deck then attaching the A frame to the board to determine the exact location. It is most important that the mast returns back to its original vertical position. Hope this helps those who want to built their own.
pretty slick.
i have a jütbaum, works like this ua-cam.com/video/qLZmgn0ykoE/v-deo.html
I watched your video. Nice system, better than a single gin pole. I wanted something a little easier for us “old folks”
Would this be scaleable for larger boats with larger masts?
Absolutely with the right materials. I’m going to do this to my Bayliner Buccaneer which has a longer mast. Probably use 1 1/2” conduit.
@@JohnVH-diy Thats great! What are the specs on that boat please?
@@TheAaronAndSharaIt’s a 1974 Ensenada 20
@JohnVH-diy ok awesome thank you so much
great set up ! clever .
Wow, really nice. I've got a rotating mast, so there's a ball on the deck and a cup on the bottom of the mast. Therefore, I think I need the final movement of the mast to be downward; here, it looks like the final movement is aftward. Do you think I could make this system work?
I would have to see pictures of it to better understand
Wow. I wouldn't know where to start with the geometry. Please, tell us you have a patent. This is a game changer. Congrats!
No patent, too much $. If you can get your boat to me I can build one out of stainless
show it working while on the water
Yes, I just picked up this boat and haven’t got it cleaned up properly but I hope to get it sailing soon and I’ll make a video on the water. This would be great for those that have to go under low bridges. You could also leave the boom and main sail attached.
Why would anybody want a blowboat😂
The older I get the slower I want to go. I like the peace and quiet of wind and waves. Try it, you might get hooked like I did.
Brilliant
Nice Idea....Proto type works well. Really like the way it fits right on the bow sprit & the cabin top.
I’m making a crutch for the mast on the stern rail to keep it off the pop top.
Beautiful design.I also looked at Alex’s mast lift but your video shows it in better briefing. The mast on my Spacesailer lifts up with a jib using alloy roof rack profile which is very strong.I did find a yellow gorilla brake winch which allows me to stop winching going up and down using just one hand in just 30 seconds. Looks like you have it sussed out.
Very cool!
I’m in Arizona. I can custom build this on your boat.
Genius 😮
How's the overall condition? How big is that boat?
It’s a real barn find. Wood interior is excellent. It’s a ‘74 Ensenada 20’. Just built a cool mast raising system for it. Put it on UA-cam today. Subscribe and you’ll see the progress.
Thanks John, nice video! A question. What;s the procedure for lowering the mast with this system? How you you detach the forward stay and reattached the boom vang?
Lowering is opposite to raising. I use the jib halyard and secure it to the bow pulpit. That takes the mast tension off the forestay so it can be loosened and attach the vang. I have a new system I’m building that uses two A frames. Subscribe so you don’t miss it.
@@JohnVH-diy Understood.Thank you John! Subscribing!
Try replacing the 2x4 with a whisker pole if you have one. Then everything will store in your boat.
I agree. Sold the boat. Bought two others. Fabricating a totally new A frame system that remains on board.
thank u so much for this ! i will be raising my mast in a weeks and i was insecure about it but this hits the i get it now spot in my brain ! thanks man
I’m designing a double A frame that eliminates the gin pole and makes it safer and easier. Subscribe please and you’ll be notified.
I knew I would find someone that simplified the process! Thank you.
Got it cleaned up and sailed it for a year. Sold it and bought another. I’m on my fourth sailboat now. Will post the videos when the work load slows down.
Mr. John, I have been trying to find someone that can do this to my mobile home, but no want do it because the mobile home is already set up, do you have any recommendations?
Block foundations are always constructed after the home is set up. Most mobilehome companies can build it for you. Block foundations are nice because you can then push dirt up to the foundation then depending on your land slopes you can add a patio or walkways like I did. The difference between the typical block foundation and mine is that the footings are much larger and actually support the perimeter of the home. The blocks are filled with concrete and the walls and floor are permanently attached to the block. Most companies will not do what I did unless you pay a lot of money. That’s why I did it myself.
John, I've made a similar tool using water for digging--typically for fruit trees--it helps to use a tee and a 6-8" nipple on the side for a 2nd handle. And a cap of course. You must have quite the compressor.
I rented an industrial compressor similar to the ones they use to run a jack hammer for road construction.
U don't need to lay block u can use retaining wall block it's block skirting
Yes you don’t need to lay block. You can use all sorts of materials. Wood, vinyl, stone. But If you want to attach an addition to your home you need to make sure it can never settle or be moved in any way. That’s why I made it a permanent foundation just like a site built home. I attached a 10x 20 room and a 26x 45 ft garage. All inspected and permitted.
All that is is a block skirting. The Jack's still hold them up. It's not a foundation
That’s where you’re wrong. The perimeter of the house sits directly on the block. The block rests on a traditional footing just like a site built house. Lag bolts are screwed up into the floor joists protruding down into the block. Cement is pumped into the block cavities creating a solid wall. Under the house are also concrete footings supporting each stand. The 24”x24” footings are 18” deep resting on undisturbed soil just like the perimeter footings. The house is deemed permanent by a HUD certified inspector and by our county building inspector. Since it is permanent and can’t ever be moved or adjusted, I was given permits to add additions to the house.
Here in TX, I saw some foundations like this settled in the dirt after several years. Drainage is still the most important thing for this foundation.
Remove all metal stands. In time they will rust to nothing.
I live in Arizona. Nothing rusts here unless it sits in water.
Fantastic work! I found your video as i was about to convert my scissor lift to a conventional fixed pontoon trailer. Your videos inspired me use some old fashioned technology (P B Blaster and Hammer) Really mild strikes and empty can its working. So now double axles and steps are next. Great content 👊🏼
I couldn’t get the TPs linkage to work properly and reliably. I also found my main wiring harness was shorting out because the plastic coating on the wires deteriorated. I ended up installing the th400 transmission that came with the engine and I got rid of all the computer functions. Only thing the computer does now is run the fuel pump and gauges.
How much did the "kit" cost?
hoosiertrailer@gmail.com. Contact Ben Gulley at this email and he’ll help you. Can’t remember what it cost.
Genius! You sir should run for president!
Yea. I was thinking about it.
😢. I don't think this saves any time money or frustration. But thanks for the video😊
Not sure what you mean about saving time or money. Maybe explain. Yes it was a lot of work and it cost a lot of money, but I was then able to legally attach an addition to mymobile home with permits.
AN existing mobile home ….
I have a '74 macgregor venture. I need to do this too
WD-40 will get that switch going again.
What a brilliant simple solution!! Way to go!
And that’s ok
Nice job. Thanks for the ideas and knowledge.
Thanks. I am working on a easy one man mast raising system so like and subscribe
OMG! You hit me in the eye with one of them flying stones! Watch where you point that thing..........
The girls that assemble them don’t want to get their thingers dirty.
I thought I heard "This is my BOOM STICK"
Boom vang. The pulley system that pulls down on the boom. It’s already on the boat so I use it to pull up the mast.
I have a question about your winches. I have a MacGregor 22 with the same winches, but I can't find handle to fit. Can you give me any help? Nice video by the way.
If you’re referring to the two sheet winches mounted on the gunwales I haven’t had the need to look for one. If you’re referring to the swing keel winch it’s a friction winch made by Fulton and the handle is available on Amazon. Hope this helps.
@@JohnVH-diy I'm now trying to drill a 15/16" hole, in a 1/16"x1 1/2" flat aluminum bar from HD, to fabricate one. I'll add a handle. I doubt you can find one.
This engineering got to be kidding me
John, how did you do top block layer on the ends where metal frame is only a few inches from the edge of the home?
Nice additions! You’re pretty handy. Well done
Great job! Thank you for posting.
That looks like it was a ton of work!
Yes it was but it was worth it. Nice workshop. Check out my other videos about the build. I also have truck and boat videos if you’re interested.
Do you still have to level it every 3 to 5 years or so? After permanent foundation?
No leveling needed if done correctly
