Only...since Oct 12 in 1985. Marillion is in my life. Brave, Script, Machine etc...Makes mi happy...thanks thanks and thanks!!!
I really like Mick Wall. He's bright, calm, analytical, authoritative, and he clearly loves Marillion. What he says about how the band could have been, had Fish carried on is, in my view, absolute nonsense. Fish with Marillion, for five years, was magical. Especially live. When Derek was young, with that wide-eyed innocence, and that admirable voraciousness for literature, and that ability to drink heavily in the Marquee bar, meant that he was always going to be news. Hogarth is roughly the same age. Hogarth is a better singer and, taken over a long haul, arguably an equally good lyricist, in the sense that he is more direct and emotive. I love Fish: he was never cool, never good looking, and never going to be the head of world-famous band. And for all those people who say: Marillion will never be the same without Fish, what about saying: Fish will never be the same without Marillion? Because I've seen Fish live in many modest dives in many cities, and he's a lovely character but he's crap live. So put that in your pipe and smoke it, because you're blinded by magic and obscured by clouds.
When I started playing the drums in my teenage years Ian was my absolute IDOL! He is not well known in the drummer world unfortunately but he is a master drummer no matter what! Thank you for the video.
Merci d'avoir rendu le film disponible, j'étais curieux et j'ai beaucoup apprécié!
You got into politics because of the Mandela gig? Your (UK) country was being torn to pieces with epic conflicts with the animal Thatcher, and you come alive over South Africa and bought some books. Give me a break , you are a major league bullshitter and that's the truth.
If Waters reunited with Gilmour, full stadiums. If Noel reunited with Liam, full stadiums. But most importantly, If cows had wings, they would fly. Full stadiums isn't the be all end all of life, and I believe Marillion are in a healthy status in many fronts, art, personal, management, fans, etc (despite all the stuff that goes around in any creative endevour by multiple people) for a very long time, and I predict till they decide to hang their boots.
Fish voice completely shot, the band would have to drop keys of all the songs by at least a tone and the enthusiasm would not be there for any of them.. Some of the interviewers comments are fair but in the context of what is possible now it could never work! thankfully. Plus its Steve H band, he has given them 35 years of his life and entire career, so should not even be a discussion point.
I remember the Marquee Club nights, and chatting to mainly you at the bar, occasionally Pete. Last time I saw you with the band was at the Rosemont Horizon in Chicago supporting Rush. Folks in the US didn't know how to categorize the music. Thank you for the great music and memories that accompany the songs.
I saw them roughly 7 times with Fish..from Reading 83 to Glasgow Barrowlands..good man mr Fish. He met my mate Robin at a Peter Hammill gig and promised him a free ticket in glasgow-which duly appeared.
I was fortunate enough to get to see Fish on both of his last two US tours. Once in Atlanta and then later in Boulder. What he says about remembering being a fan strikes true. I spoke to him briefly in Atlanta, then at length in Boulder. We talked about his (then fairly new) interest in gardening. He sat at our table for an hour or more signing autographs and talking about another of his passions, which is one of mine, and never did he seem to dismiss anyone. On the other side of the coin, before the show he had met a few folks in the bar then went to dinner. After dinner he walked back towards the venue, stopping across the street for a smoke. Even though we were a crowd of fans literally just across the street , none of us bothered him. I think the relationship with fans is such that while sure we want to see and meet him, we know when to respect his time because he respects us.
Great interview. Mick's last sentence really gets you thinking: what if...
For me, one of the very best covers Mark did, was 13th star. That album cover is absolutely fantastic!
This is a great interview, even by h standards. Thank you!!
I've never understood the Fish verses Hogarth dispute. They're both extremely good vocalists and writers. To say one is better than the other is a silly statement because it's purely down to personal taste. So personally I prefer Hogarth's voice and lyrics to Fish's and in reality Marillion had to evolve, which I don't think they would have done with Fish, but I like them both. The good thing about the split is that where we used to have Marillion albums to buy, now we have Marillion AND Fish albums to buy. It's a win-win!
Utter nonsense. Marillion have moved on without Fish and are making much better music
I have followed Marillion through both era's and admire both. U have no idea the band has always been about the connection with their fans. Personally I, m pleased they aren't Floyd I get to see the greatest concerts in small venues any Marillion concert is a partyof fans and band
The cat never eats Fish ...
While DD is talking, in the middle of a statement/thought, why is the interviewer KEEP trying to interrupt/say something. . . . !!? Grrrrrr Let the man talk. Just a thought- Also, a super shallow DOF lens isn't great for an interview. Subject moving close/far keeps loosing focus-very distracting if watching. Excellent info and his usual great storytelling. Thx!
I can't hear what the interviewer is saying.
Fish & Marillion making an album would be interesting, (never going to happen)…… but Fish & Marillion “live” would be a disaster. Musically brilliant for sure, but Fish, as much as i love the guy to bits, (he was my “childhood”).,…. He cannae sing any mair!! Too many Marlboros!!
Thank you!
Great interview. Fish is a class act!
Very interesting interview - but I'm not 100% convinced on the final sentence ... I think Fish's slightly over inflated ego and deteriorating voice would have caused major problems in the group inevitable.
Love the bloke. He’s a legend. Saved marillion
Danke fuer den wunderbaren Film und all die tollen Menschen. Wir brauchen einander.
I remember that time. I remember buying Season end and listening my brand new vinyl with some mixed feelings since came the final part of The space... "uhmm... that's impossible to do live" a voice buzzed in my head "ok. I call!". The next day I rang to a girl friend of mine and I asked her politely if she would please come with me attending the Milan show. I warned her of my mixed feelings about a band that has just lost her frontman but and that I needed her fresh impressions: she didn't new Marillion before so she could be objective more than I could do at the time. I didn't needed her further: the show was awesome and those midi gloves made all the rest. I'm still here.
Well done. Going through all the vids now. Great find! Thanks Jeff.
Only just seen this! Three old friends and a great chat. Love it.
I've seen Marillion in many countries. My experiences or Marillion and h Natural in Quebec are amongst the most precious of all. Merci, guys!
Rather than wallowing in nostalgia, its best to just move forward with things as they are. Neither camp needs the other to survive and Marillion’s legacy since 89 stands on its own merit.
Think of it as history. Which is interesting to learn.
Hilarious to read people saying that they would have been huge if Fish had stayed. Clutching at Straws sold significantly less than Misplaced Childhood. That sold on the strength of one, maybe two singles. Yeah that introduced a significant number of fans who stayed with them, but not enough to make them huge. A second fish album after MC would have seen them back out of stadiums & into concert halls. They would have no larger audience than they have now & would likely now be a memory
Marillion. Super musique. Depuis le début
Ey Mick, Marillion can manage brilliantly without Fish, I think they`ve grown since he left.
cat does not care, smoking killed his voice
💞🐙💞🐙🐙🐙🐳🌹🌹🌷😁😁😁
Marillion Love!!❤🎶❤
My favorite band, they just touch me emotionally like no other. The weekends are the best concerts, all the fans together, hanging out with the band and the fans, it's like nothing else!
And the price for most deascent and nice band goes to...
The man
OMG... I remember having a drink with fish in the Ship pub in wardour street down the road from the Marquee! With a couple of members of the band.. while being interviewed with Sounds or NME.. Just before a gig obviously at the Marquee! Loved that club.. So many great bands played there. Brilliant atmosphere!
I feel quite emotional watching this
Underrated drummer, underrated band, underrated singers, underrated everything. I just listened to a cover of Script for a Jester's Tear, and hearing a new arrangement, it struck me how well written Marillion's music is. This is the real deal, folks.
Just FYI, Ian was not the drummer when that song was created. Mick Pointer was the drummer at that time but I am sure if Ian made a new rendition of that song it was probably awesome.
I don't think Fish made bad choises. In the long run, he wasn't very comfortable in the fame machine. I think he did what he had to do, succesful or not.. In the 80's he got fame, but it didn't seem to make him happy. I think he and Marillion were destined to part ways.. As for the speculations about a reunion, it's rubbish. It can't happen, it shouldn't happen and it wont happen. And no, Marillion wouldn't be Pink Floyd. No friggin way.
Noone, absolutely noone could predict Marillion's success. If you didn't hang out and listen to popular music in the 80's, you can't understand how insanely odd they were. There was nothing like them in mainstream channels..
Rush ?
Truly are a remarkable band
Mick Wall obviously knows nothing about modern Marillion. Fish's live singing voice is a shadow of what is was, putting it kindly. H has been in the band several times longer than Fish and is the better vocalist by a country mile. There is no way they should attempt anything other than a one off show with Fish, maybe to mark Fish's retirement from music.
Very touching! :)
this was wonderful Jeff - thank you.
Peculiar creatures.!🧐!.
I never heard of this before... A band LOSING MONEY by touring.!😲!. Is this not where you make MOST of your MONEY, from gate receipts.?🤔?.
Not if you don't have label backing - i.e. they lend you money in advance of record sales. Which you have to pay back. (I was the first person to put money into the tour fund after Jeff Woods opened the ESCROW account).
