I took Football and Wrestling my freshman year, but now I am shifting gears to marching band and more academic based classes. Do I absolutely need continue to take athletics in school to have a shot? Or are there applicants who don’t do athletics but score well on the physical tests. Also if I join sports can it be outside of school?

With an early LOA to USMMA, do you think getting a nomination will be easier? Can the reps also nominate up to 15 or is it different than DOD academies? Given the disparity in SAT%, is an LOA to USMMA really apples to oranges for the other academies?

When I was in high school in the 80's, it was generally accepted in my area that if your family didn't have "connections" to the congressman at the time (he was there for decades) don't even bother trying because you will not get a nomination. My understanding talking with young people today is that kind of corruption is still happening to some extent.

This is super helpful, thank you so much. there are a couple things I am a little confused on 1. Do you think most type 1 scholarships will be awarded to critical rating 1-2 majors? I am curious whether the criticality rating matters as much as other factors (such as whether your major is technical or not) when it comes to scholarship selection. 2. If I wanted to pursue a non-technical major (such as psychology), is there an estimation for what gpa/sat/etc. would be required in order to compensate for the lack of a technical major in order to be awarded a type 1 scholarship? Does this even happen?

To all concern, I have a 12 Grader daughter presently studying in Ontario Canada and have a very good scholastic academic records as well from her robotic group enthusiast to Aircraft Maintenance apprenticeship as part of her Co-op / SHSM course as completed from last year in Milton District High School and now she is preparing for her next journey to her academy life to pursue her dreams to join USAFA and to fulfill her dreams as an Aircraft Engineer or Aerospace Engineer after her graduation on June 2025. I really appreciate any informations on how to proceed from start to finish the application. Do she need to find any recruiter to apply to USAFA? or She need to have the “NOMINATION” process? My worries is how and where we can get to start since she is coming from Ontario Canada?. I do believe that you should be under the state district for you to able to have a Nomination letter for the Recommendations. Any guidance to processing procedures is so much appreciated. Don’t underestimate the ROTC Nomination. My son was in a NJROTC unit in high school and got an ROTC nomination to USNA. His senior NJROTC instructor filled out a simple form and wrote a letter of recognition. Turns out he was competing against college ROTC kids as well. He was appointed in early November. Congress critter interviews didn’t occur until December/January. He received nominations to all three service academies even though he already accepted his USNA appointment.

This is the same crying when the schools went coed. Change is hard. 'Why aren't you still whipping the boys, Hornblower?'

I'm a retired officer living next to USNA and am a long term sponsor parent. I was initially surprised by the high number of college experienced midshipmen. One of the Brigade Commanders during my time in Annapolis had three years at USC, were he was President of his fraternity, and was able to complete the credits for his USC degree while at USNA. My theory as to why USNA has a high percentage of college applicants and midshipmen is access access to NROTC programs. There are more Army ROTC and Air Force ROTC programs around the country (often with robust cross enrollment programs) the kids who are interested in becoming an Army or Air Force officer have access to these programs and quickly get committed, so the cost of exiting and delaying a commissioning date is high. There are fewer NROTC programs by design, so not as many applicants face the same type of opportunity cost with a later entry to Annapolis.

My son was appointed early in the process, November, after receiving a NJROTC nomination from his high school senior NJROTC instructor who was a retired Senior Chief. My son was the cadet unit commander and a top student. He is 50% Hispanic. He also received nominations to USMA and USAFA by our congressmen. He didn’t have varsity sports and started high school during COVID 19 lockdowns. I think he benefited from being from a highly under represented state, NM. On I Day I observed plenty of kids of all races, but the the majority was white. Here is the breakdown: 15156 applied 1187 appointed 814 men, 373 women, 511 minority 209 from NAPS Seems pretty on par with national norms to this observer. Maybe some of the anecdotal stories differ.

Question 1 - So we thought we had a good handle on all of this. Then I start reading various comments and realize we do not! Our specific situation... son is now a senior at a military prep high school (Army). We understand the school does have the "Unit of Distinction" designation. We thought these were the only units that could give nominations (not all Army JROTC Senior Army Instructors can do so) and the SAI could only nominate for USMA. Am I reading correctly that the SAI at a Unit of Distinction can nominate to other academies??? Question 2 - We know MOC can now do 15 nominations per. However, we're being told that a MOC can only have a certain number at a given academy at a given time. Does this mean if a Congressman will still have 5 at the USMA in the upcoming school year then there is no reason to seek that nomination? What is the race/ethnicity of those principal nominees that were rejected? Just a hunch here. Perhaps this should be investigated by congress.

Do you see a particular weighting regarding admissions decisions at the Naval Academy? For example, our son is a strong athlete but has yet to gain extracurricular leadership experience due to his practice schedule. Is that going to hurt him even more? Either way, appreciate the advice. Our son is applying to all the academies.

I cannot help but wonder if this is due to DEI initiatives. It is simply a question that has to be asked whether it is comfortable to discuss or not. Hopefully some data will come out that will answer this question.

Should the applicant take a letter from doctor regarding the status of a diagnosis to the DODMERB exam? In my son's case, dealing with ADHD from elementary school. Current doctor wrote a note that said he had not been medically treated in past 5+ years. Would that be useful to bring, or will that have to wait for the remedial or waiver process?

I have a question. I currently attend a hybrid high school that does not have sports or clubs, and surrounding high schools do not permit outside students to join their teams. I am interested in applying to the USAFA, but I am afraid I will not have the kinds of leadership or athleticism that the other competitors have, due to attending a smaller school with less opportunities. Do alternative leadership roles, such as serving as a volunteer teacher's assistant or organizing school events, hold the same value as positions like a team captain or student government? Additionally, does participation in less common sports, such as falconry or equestrianism, provide a strong chance of selection?

Don't forget that OCS is another option to get a commission.

Did you know that due to budget limitations, in 2024 the USAF is not funding tuition for 5th year students in CSAF approved STEM majors? No official word has been passed by HQ USAF, funding was just stopped without any explanation. Figured it would be important for anyone researching the ROTC program to know about this in advance. We were not informed and the funding was cut after the deadlines for any possible alternatives were available. Not a great way to retain high quality men and women in the Service.
