    Something to remember - you don't have to just use water to rehydrate and use your freeze dried foods. If you are making a soup or a casserole, they typically call for broth or stock, so use that to rehydrate your foods. If you are a home canner, you can make a recipe with a blend of your home canned goods and some freeze dried foods (think veggies) - use the liquid from any home canned item that is being used in the recipe and that can provide some liquid to rehydrate your dried foods (even if you have to add some water - if you have quite a bit of liquid from a home canned product, you may only need half as much water). If making a soup, you don't have to rehydrate the dried food before using it - just add it right to the soup and it will rehydrate as it cooks.

    Thank you so much for this video. New sub and long time prepper myself and the one thing we are lacking is water prep. Thanks for the info on the 5 gallon jugs for water and dont forget to stock some whole wheat berries to make some bread just in case. Azure standard is who we buy from and they are all organic grains and pricing is pretty fair. Just keep in mind moderation is key if you have diabetic family members when it comes to carbs. Thanks again and god bless.

      Unfortunately, water containers are expensive🙄 1 can 23 liters 29 Canadian dollars I have 6 pieces. I will add more💯the only thing that makes me happy is that it’s not a one-time purchase! should last a long time. so it's not wasted money.

    Regarding the 25 year shelf life....I am almost 70 years old.... I'll stick with my own pressure canned food, back up of cans and cans of store canned goods. I was low in fruit so I did what you said. Every time I went to the store, I would buy 4 cans of fruit. I am in better shape with fruit than I ever was. Last year, I went to 2 u-pick fruit farms. It isn't any cheaper but at least it wasn't picked in a foreign country and packed with whatever. I have frozen the fruit but plan on canning it this winter. Pressure canning meat is the easiest thing to do. I have beef, turkey, chicken, pork, hamburger. All so easy.

    we also have a working pantry . im guessing we have 3 months of freeze dried food . and about 14 months can food . im guessing half our food is home grown . wife and i are hunters gun and bow fish and gather . we dont store much water we have a spring and river . we also have other ways to cook , heat , lights etc . i laugh at videos ... i have 5 years of food but have no outdoor skills and no gear .

    • @terrybattle7053
      @terrybattle7053 7 місяців тому

      You have to be able to hunt and fish. And having the gear to do it, is just another way to be prepared. But I also know some people are not physically able to hunt. So I could see the need for those people to store a lot of food. I lived by a water source in Oklahoma but now that i live in West Virginia I live in town. It just made more sense to have stored water. I still have stuff to filter water because I love hiking for 3 or 4 days at a time. And I can't carry that much water.

    • @terrybattle7053
      @terrybattle7053 7 місяців тому

      I have both. If you just have freeze dried food you need water to make it. And water storage containers are not cheap. And neither is freeze dried food. But it does have a 25 year shelf life. So I have both canned food and freeze dried foods just to be well rounded. But I also store enough water to make all the freeze dried food I have. I hoped you might have some information and thoughts on how to keep a hot tent wood stove going at night? The reason I ask this is that people show many, many hot tent videos but usually they'll slip in something like don't run your stove at night because of CO poisoning fears. But people are not realizing that people have to run their stoves at night in the winter, especially with the way the utilities are destabilizing this will be a bigger need and issue in the future. So it seems you can't avoid using a wood stove. And its very possible that it will increase, especially as the g o v continues its downward spiral. So I hoped you or others might be able to comment on how to safely keep your wood/hot stove going either in a cabin or tent at night. Because it looks like we might really have to know this in the future and be able to do it safely. ... Probably this should be done with a carbon monoxide monitor. But that seems tricky too in that if its like smoke alarms, you need one that won't go off with every puff of smoke, but only go off at critical levels. Thanks for any thoughts.

    • @terrybattle7053
      @terrybattle7053 8 місяців тому

      So In this camping video I did keep the stove going all night. We didn't take sleeping pads with any kind of R rating. And the sleeping bags we took only had a rating of 50 degrees. We wanted to really test out the hot tent. So I had to keep the stove going all night. So with that being said. The stove I took is small, I loaded it with wood first to see how long it lasted and it was about one hour burn time. So used the saw dust logs and got a good burn time. I loaded the stove up at midnight with two logs and I started getting cold around 3:15 AM, but I was sleeping on the ground. I loaded it up and made it to 6:30 AM with just two logs. I did check the stove pipe when I got home to see if it was full of soot, and it didn't seem more than it would have been with wood. As far as carbon monoxide if you use a tester instead of a detector you will get a better understanding of the levels. The tester shows how many PPM (parts per million) not just an alarm, it will alarm once it reaches dangerous levels. I do understand the frustration with the detector going off over a puff of smoke or opening the stove door to add wood. I feel better about having both. If the detector goes off I turn on the tester and check the actual levels just to make sure. I did have the vents at the top of the tent open all night and never got an alarm. People have been heating homes for years with wood burning stoves. Making sure the stove pipe is not leaking and only opening the door when adding wood will help keep carbon monoxide down.

    Your wife can eat anything but she has to limit her portions on carbohydrates and eat more protein based foods, everyone goes extreme when first starting a diabetic type diet its more about portions on your carbohydrates your breads, pastas, sugars, you could fix a pot of beans you could have cornbread but only one piece instead of two 😂 its limits say once a month eat you a piece of pie lose some weight take walks these are just my opinions but have been a diabetic for years and a retired registered nurse 😊 have found this way of eating can work but extreme diets for diabetes don't you get tired of it start sneaking food I live in Oklahoma and know about the weather wait 5 minutes it will change 😂God bless

    I suggest buying long term prep food like Augason Farms freeze dried food. Tomato powder has a 25 year self life and you can make spaghetti sauce, Tomato past, ketchup and barbeque sauce with that one product. Other than that start with Augason farms Butter (#10 Can), Eggs, Milk, Vegetarian Beef Flavored crumble(That's for the Sauce) from there then buy everything else they offer. Always cover the essential's first!

      I agree with the freeze dried foods. I do have Augason Farms, Nutrient Survival, Mountain House, and My Patriot Supply. But with that being said you have to store enough water to make all the freeze dried foods. And it takes up a lot of room, I have one years worth of water for three people. Plus what I need for my freeze dried food. If I get more freeze dried food, I am going to have to get more 5 gallon water jugs. Lol Plus our pantry is used daily, freeze dried foods included. All our freeze dried foods have been tried and we only buy the ones we like and use.

      I believe we got some of them from The Ready Store. And yes, I filled them with tap water and used ION water treatment drops. It gives water a 5 plus year shelf life. When I ordered the jugs I made sure it came with ION water treatment. I also have a water tester just to make sure when I use them. But we do rotate them out, we take them camping for drinking water and they make washing up dishes easy because of the spigots.

But when she went through a plant closer and started a new job and waited four weeks to get her first pay check, we just ate out of our pantry and didn't have to shop for food. She got fully involved in prepping, canning, food storage, and freeze dried foods. Our pantry has saved us more than once, life happens sometimes and being prepared is always a good thing.

    How much does the tent and stove weigh? I'm trying to picture how someone could carry it a few miles in Appalachia. I'd like to hot tent, but I'd like to do it several miles in the backcountry. Let me suggest something, please be careful with those sawdust logs. The embers will burn the shit out of your tent if you're not careful. The potatoes looked good! I've packed potatoes and foil with me on section hikes. Can't go wrong with a couple potatoes and some salt & pepper packets.

    • @terrybattle7053
      @terrybattle7053 8 місяців тому

      The stove by it's self is 20.2lbs. The tent is 9.4lbs with the center pole, or you can leave it at home and run a ridge line for the tent. The tent and the insert together are 12.4lbs. Now take in mind I got the weights with my bathroom scale. I did transport all the items in my car right to my campsite. And yes i was very careful with sawdust logs.

    Brother, if you break down on the side of the road in winter, outside of cell service, and need to flag down help or walk to help, 90% of that is useless and you’re missing 90% of what you’ll need. Just think of a 2-3 hour (or whatever) walk along a road in winter and what you’d need, then pack that. Ditch the cordage, books, bushcraft knife and bandaids. Just think about it… walking along a cold road for 2-3 hours, with a possible injury: Ace compression bandage, gauze, tourniquet, blood stopper, splint, rain jacket, rain pants, stocking cap, neck buff, gaiters, wool socks, winter gloves, headlamp, pad and pencil, emergency blanket, $20, water bottle and energy bar. Done. Then keep a car repair kit in your car: tire repair kit, inflator, jumper battery, car marking (flairs etc), note pad and pencil, paper map, slip joint pliers, knee for nose pliers, two screw drivers, utility knife, zip ties, duct tape, work gloves. Your car-specific already included spare tire kit. Done.

      I guess you didn't watch the video. I keep all my winter gear in my truck and water. And a tool kit in my truck. Like is said in the video, this is what I keep in my bag that I carry everyday. So you have all those items in your EDC? I carry cordage to make a shelter if I have to, knife to cut wood for a fire. And the book is so I have different ideas for building shelters depending on what's available.
