Early Morning Rain
Переглядів 2323 роки тому
A quick cover of Gordon Lightfoot's "Early Morning Rain". I'd written a guitar solo for a student, and wanted to test out settings for my new Sony VZ-1 camera. Here it is, one camera, one microphone, a few takes later. I'm not centered in the image, and it's not the complete song, so a bit of a rough cut.

Beautiful! Please the chords.

Heading off this Friday for Ragbrai LI, July 20-27. The route is across southern Iowa, starting in Glenwood and ending in Burlington. I'm really looking forward to riding, meeting people, and seeing lots of new places. A video of my experiences will be forthcoming, so stay tuned!
Johnny is playing the part that sounds like the train sound (ch, chicka, ch), but it's him playing his guitar with a card woven into the strings. Luther Perkins is playing the lead, as he did in all of Johnny's songs from this era. This particular song is actually one of Luther's more complicated feats we've all been trying to duplicate for decades now. Also, the reason people think they were playing in F when they were actually playing in E is because they had their guitars tuned to each other and they were off when this and other songs were recorded. Trying to play along with the recordings in either E or F won't quite match them because, from what I've read, Luther's guitar is somewhere in between standard E and F, which became part of the magic. It's a shame LP died when he did and under the circumstances in which he did. It would have been interesting to see what his guitar playing would have evolved into as the 70s rolled in.
Beautiful voice and great uke!
Wow
Thank you very much.
Brilliant than you
Randy, congratulations on completing RAGBRAI and creating a great video of your experience. I did ride 3 days of RAGBRAI in 1999. The U.S. Navy league found us host homes along the way and that made a huge difference. Kudos to your family for helping out. This event is truly about the people of Iowa and some of the interesting folks who chose to ride it. Maybe you could capture those perspectives in your future RAGBRAI’s. Take care!
Hi David. This is a good idea! I'm signed up to ride Ragbrai LI this summer, and it will be a somewhat different adventure because there is only one overnight town that has relatives close by. I'm leaning toward using a charter service that will provide me with a tent for the week. That means I'll be around a set group of people in the evenings, a good chance to have conversations. Since the 2023 video was about my experience, '24 could be about those around me and the people of Iowa. "Iowa Nice" is a very real thing! Thanks for watching.
@@randygildersleeve4528 My RAGBRAI experience a long time ago. However I remember some of the rich conversations at along the route at the towns , VFW halls , churches and community centers. Very enriching.
Beautiful. I couldn't tell at first with the masks if you got Sierra Hull to sit in. The mandolin playing is just that good. I may steal some of those licks.
Superb!
You had a great team! Well done finishing what amounted to an incredibly challenging event - no matter how hard anyone trained. Congrats!
Great documentary! Would you mind sharing what video and editing equipment you used? I am signed up for RAGBRAI LI with my two adult sons and want to document the experience similar to how you did.
Hello Charles. I'm glad to hear that you and your sons will be participating in Ragbrai LI. It's truly a worthwhile endeavor, but be sure to get some training in. I rode over 1000 miles in the 10 weeks leading up Ragbrai, and that really help me make it through without a lot of soreness. About 95% of my documentary was shot on my iPhone 15 Pro. I did get some photos from a family group that rode L, and dowloaded a couple from the internet-one in particular was the thunderstorm shot at the end of day 6. I use Final Cut Pro on an iMac for editing. I've owned an audio recording studio for decades, but in the past 10 years have done quite a bit of video editing work too, so I know a few tricks. My one wish is that I'd shot more video while riding, and to do that I'd want a camera mounted on my helmet or maybe strapped to my chest. With you and your sons, you have more camera opportunities, so that helps. I hope to see you on the road in July!
Thanks so much for the reassurance that iPhone is sufficient. I need to practice and figure out how to edit. Hope to see you at RAGBRAI!
@@randygildersleeve4528 Hi Randy...we continue training here and really looking forward to RAGBRAI. I am not as ambitious with the documentary but started practicing making videos of my training with the iPhone. Hope to see you on the RAGBRAI trail!
@@charlesthornton2065 Hi Charles! I'm definitely getting ready for Ragbrai, although it's been a wet and cool summer so far. I did buy a new camera; Insta360 x3, which will help me capture more on-the-bike action. I hope we cross paths!
very well done.this helps to understand the logistics and make my decision.
Thanks Randy, a great account of this event, and a great soundtrack too.
Congratulations on the ride, Randy. Hope you'll do RAGBRAI again. I've done 3 rides so far with the 4th coming up. The hardest part for me on RAGBRAI is finding a ride there and back. I'm 100% self-supported and had been traveling with a local charter but with it being the 50th ride last year, they were full and I had to find my own way there. The baggage trucks are a nice service but with the long lines each morning, I decided to ditch them and carried everything on my Cannondale Topstone (love that bike and I'm sure you'd agree) when we reached Des Moines since I live here. Think I will do that going forward since I can leave at anytime in the morning which is 4:30ish (lol.) I usually have issues falling asleep on the first and second day on RAGBRAI. Once I'm exhausted, it doesn't matter what's going on around me. I'm surprise you didn't mention the overnight towns are usually next to train tracks (lost track of how many trains went by in Ames.) Ride safe and Happy New Year!!!
Thanks Andrew! It's good to hear from a fellow rider. The first day baggage truck snafu and last day long line for the wheel dip are my only two real complaints. I feel fortunate that I was able to camp 3 days and get that experience, and then stay with relatives the other 4. For 2024, I'm hoping to organize a small group with a support vehicle. If you get a chance, check out the "Just Go Bike" podcast on the Ragbrai website-the episode a month or so ago where ride director Matt was the guest was very informative, and gave me a better understanding of the obstacles overcome with logistics. I hope to see you on the road next summer!
Way to go!!❤
What a huge accomplishment Randy. You should be so proud. Your video was so well done, enjoyed watching it. Thank you. And Merry Christmas!
Congratulations on the ride. Next, ride across the US. Stay safe and have fun.
Look at the state of them wearing face nappies.
Jim and Randy, this is lovely! Truly emotional! Bravo!
I love it. This has been one of my all-time favorite songs throughout "the years". Many thanks 🙂
I’m trying to figure out the intro on baritone ukulele. It’s hard to find the finger picking. Now that I found this video I just got to translate this.. pray for me it’s tricky 😆 thank you for sharing what you know!
Play at 1.25× speed for it to sound closer to the original. Wonderful rendition btw
Nice try, big guy, preciate
I will bet it took Luther a long time to get this one right as it is just about the most guitar he played on any Johnny Cash song.
Very nice.
Wow! Spectactular!! Control, speed, technicality, SOUL!!!!!
Liz Ashworth is the best mandolin player the world has never heard of. I’ve seen her play live several times in the Minneapolis area over the past year (the Parkway Theater and the 318) when she backed up Jon Garon and Becky Thompson. Her musicianship shines - she’s also one of the kindest and most genuine people you’ll meet if you get the chance to talk to her after a show.
Hi Everyone. I put this video up two years ago, after a student requested a lesson about how to play this interesting bass part. The video has had a surprising number of views, and I appreciate that. One unusual aspect of this song is there is no bass part during the verses, and I've gotten some comments because I'm offering a part you could play in those areas. The part I suggest is pretty much doubling the guitar part. My response to commenters is 1) this is not a critique of Free's choice to leave bass out of the verses. The song is a classic as is, and I respect minimalism. 2) Last I checked, music is about creativity and communication, and if you want to play Andy Fraser's bass part note for note that's cool, but there is room in this world for alternatives.
Your work is very good... It's important for future generations Congratulations...🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
My favorite is the uke’s! Such a pretty arrangement . Thank you Randy. Merry Christmas!
If you need to fill the gaps in the song then you really don't understand FREE, you don't understand Andy Fraser's bass playing and you should leave the song alone.
I agree.
I read this as “We don’t talk about banjo.” 😂 that would make a great parody song!
Thanks! Another entry in the pantheon of banjo jokes...
Merry Christmas and thanks for sharing!
I don't think anybody plays this right except me
I enjoyed your video and I wanted to tell you a lot of Johnny Cash songs have the same kind of feeling to them using this kind of the same notes on the fretboard because it it's used in a lot of songs
Love this, not certain how to find the score “listed below”, fun!!
Check out ua-cam.com/video/aQkSE_AB6F4/v-deo.html at 1:54:33 for Ron Delacy's take on this fine piece, making it the anthem of the winter Yeow shows. When the audience gets into it, "Yeows" can shake the place!
Wish I could see all your smiles and not the masks!
So good!!! Great playing, great sound, great mix, great video!!!!! Randy, Ben, Liz, Grey, and Andy; Bravissimo!!!!!
Popped this on 1.25 speed and its great
Did the same before reading this!
awsome.
Octave lower on chorus.
Enjoyed the mandolin playing
The banjo girl didn't even look into his fingers all through her picking part! That is awesome.
Umm, that's a mandolin.
Excellent. Best breakdown online. Thank you
