    These supposedly intelligent people all thought NASA wouldn't needlessly put their lives at risk. They over-estimated man's concern for his fellow man.

      Sh*t happens, no matter how hard you try for absolute safety, there's no 100% risk free. Thousands have paid with their lives for the advancement of technology and aviation is a perfect example, with each accident a new lesson to prevent it from happening again. The automobile industry is another example. Medicine. Space exploration. That's why these pioneers are heroes. They knew the risks and still they went and did their job anyway.

    • @MrDaryboy
      @MrDaryboy 15 годин тому

      @@ruialexandre6197I agree but it does show that intelligence is a very misunderstood term. To risk so much is created intentionally so there is some sort of validation to such risks. It's completely unnecessary. A great example is that we already benefited from the automobile yet even though at a speed of 45 mph would get us there at a comfortable time frame that's not good enough so we allow speeds that will certainly end in catastrophic situations all for the sake of convenience. Intelligence is a term so misunderstood and not used correctly.

      If NASA told them, there would have been a mutiny. The crew would refuse to reenter, and they could loiter in orbit until February 15 at the latest because Columbia was carrying more provisions than usual.

    I can’t help but wonder if jailing people after Challenger may have given NASA better focus on safety going forward. It’s terrible that there was literally nothing that could be done, there were no spacecraft that could rescue them, or even resupply them. Hopefully it was over quick, and if so I think NASA were right not telling them about any concerns…although it seems more likely that NASA weren’t so much concerned as just hoped things would turn out alright.

    • @Pw.asap99

      No reason for jail. Astronauts face danger braaa

    • @james_fisch
      @james_fisch День тому

      @@Pw.asap99 In the case of Challenger, honestly there should have been jailtime due to how much concern was brought up before its launch, meaning it could have been prevented had those in charge actually took action from those concerns. However, I don't feel that's what happened in Columbia's case. They had already taken off and were doomed before they even exited Earth. It was with little doubt a tragedy, and from what I remember there was better scrutiny on later Space Shuttle launches since there was not another fatal incident. We came close with Atlantis during STS-27, which wasn't long after Challenger and similarly ran into reentry problems like Columbia.

    • @ichabaudcraine2923
      @ichabaudcraine2923 10 днів тому

      By “no commonality” they mean the signal paths for each of the sensors they had lost were independent of one another and couldn’t have been the result of failure of a single piece of hardware. Getting bad readings from multiple independent sensors indicates a real problem. So when they say “no commonality” they’re not denying what’s going on, in fact that’s probably the moment they realise there’s a serious issue.

    • @StevenJShow

      Elon was the only reason Americans were being launched into space on American soil. SpaceX is a great achievement. Yes, if we had someone like Elon Musk in the early 2000s investing hundreds of millions of dollars into new space craft, this might have been avoided. The Space Shuttles were run well after their life span. They were designed and constructed in the late 70s. By this time they were overworked, and NASA was not able to keep them refitted as they needed. I know you want to hate Elon, but he was the only one in America doing anything to get us back into space. It wasn't until after the successful docking of SpaceX Dragon at the ISS that NASA started to make headway on their own manned rocket programs.

    That honestly had to be an absolutely terrifying way to die. I have to wonder: how would it have gone down had they discovered while still in orbit that the vehicle would be a total loss…

    • @StevenJShow
      @StevenJShow 10 днів тому

      Not much they could do at that point. The only theoretical possibility would have been to dock at the ISS, but they were in a completely different orbit. The only other option would have been to launch one of the other shuttles with a skeleton crew and have the Columbia team do an EVA from their ship to the other shuttle, but that could result in even more deaths.

    Judging from the full Mission Control tape it's obvious they knew the landing was likely doomed from the start. They were just waiting for the temp sensors to go off. No one is even remotely surprised about what's happening. NASA continues to deny this but watch the tape for yourself and it's obvious.

    Challenger hurt. Columbia? Totally stunned me. I was in a funk for sometime after that mishap. I came to know when I took my family to a pizza lunch. All the TV's were showing debris. At first, I thought it was old film of Challenger...Realization proved only slowly that this wasn't a re-run. Six of the seven astronauts held PH D's in their fields. It's a dangerous job. Id've gladly taken a seat on either of them at the time...
