Ep. 15 - Miles Davis E.S.P.
Переглядів 769 місяців тому
E.S.P. is an album by Miles Davis, recorded on January 20-22, 1965 and released on August 16 of that year by Columbia Records. It is the first release from what is known as Davis's second great quintet: Davis on trumpet, Wayne Shorter on tenor saxophone, Herbie Hancock on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Tony Williams on drums. The album was named after a tune by Shorter, and was inspired by the ...

It was interesting to finally hear where the basic tracks for the Alan Douglas Midnight Lightning came from. That was one of the most elusive tracks for me. I hadn’t heard that anywhere.
I wish this was available to purchase separately from the box set
Great review and background
Thank you, appreciate it.
Nice comprehensive and descriptive review.
Thank you, appreciate it.
August 68 Singer Bowl.Brooklyn Queens NYC
Take a drink for every time he says “if you will” 😉 (Great content - just being a smart ass haha😂
Thanks, definitely need to work on it;)
Excellent review u did about b.o.g. enjoyed it best band from that time 36o degree on his sound 👏👏😊👌
Thank you, appreciate it.
Since sound is what I tuned in 4 Can we hear the show or is this a blah blah blah account of a performance bye getting too sleepy😢😢😢
Belly Button Window has a great channel. It's basically a Docu-Pod of Jimi's life and career. Excellent content. Each one is about 25 minutes long covering a month in the life of the Jimi Hendrix Experience.
Super Bad Ass show. This show I think was recorded by Walley Heider. Top 5: 1) Forum '69 2) San Diego '69 3) Winterland October '68 4) BCT May '70 5) Atlanta Pop '70
Hi Frank, great video A lot of great content. Thank you so much for
Appreciate your feedback, glad you enjoy the video.
Garbage everything he played he was high and out of tune. Garbage
Idk, i think i like Billy better on bass. I know thats blasphemous, maybe its just its just that Jimi is better
9:10 9:15 9:17
There are much better recording s of this Show Try and find them please
Ghost is about Jerry Garcia
This was a super forgettable album. I have seen Phish over 125 times and I don't really like any of those songs. I was on that European tour in Belgium and Amsterdam. And I saw many of those 1999 Summer shows including the Deer Creek shows.
Turn your mic up dude
@ 24:14, meant to say Page.
Not heard any other live recordings from their first period in the states, just Monterey. He was full of energy, enthusiasm and freshness at that time in 67 and the sound at Monterey was ground-breaking, on a different level to any of the recordings from early 67 in England so it's disappointing so little of that early period in America has ever shown up on film or record.
My aunt mentioned she was dancing in the water at this concert. The security was going to kick people out but Jimi threatened to stop playing unless they could stay in the water.
Jimi was receiving threats from Bowl Mgt to keep people out of the water. In the recording you can hear him plead with swimmers to stay out of the pool at least until "the last song".
Read Noel Reddings book. Jimi was sick of fighting with Noel. In his book, Noel admits to sometimes playing badly on purpose. For all kinds of reasons. Billy Cox was a bass player. Not a guitarist asked to play bass. Big difference. Jimi and Mitch needed a dedicated bass player.
Yup I've read Noel's book as well, fun read. I'm sure Jimi and Noel's personalities wore each other out. You can certainly hear it on live recordings, Noel sounds annoyed a lot of times especially their last few tours together.

Recorded 2/15/1964
Hendrix and his bandmates were playing strongly in the Spring of 1969!..I caught them on 23 May 1969, in Seattle. So far, no tape of that gig has shown up...Hey Janie...if you have the tape, please release it before I die!...It was a powerful performance.
Was an amazing weekend of live Jimi for sure. We know 5/24 exists on SBD, there is a decent audience recording of 5/25. To hear 5/23 would be the ultimate trifecta no doubt.
Great show❤one of thiere best
So good!
I like your descriptions in the review. To weigh in on favorites, Radio One album is a fav. Live performances in a studio. Especially Going South. I heard that jam at medium beats on at least one show. But in this radio studio performance he goes double speed with a sizzling whammy with volume control feedback crescendo connecting phrases seemlessly. A fun listen.
I love that version of Drivin' South, so killer, peak Jimi!
Some of the modern day merges of different sources are also great. But back then, unless you saw Jimi live this was the only way. It sold really well. And sounds pretty decent. A good show as well. The first show with Army buddy Billy Cox is a feature.
Yup definitely, I do have most if not all of the circulating merges, will be fun to listen and compare. Billy's debut with Hendrix was at Woodstock followed by their 9/5/69 Harlem gig before the four Band of Gypsies shows 12/31/69-1/1/70. There was another one off at the Salvation Club as well in the Fall of 69. Not to mention the aborted 1/28/70 debacle. Billy had played eight official shows with Jimi before 4/25/70.
I shook noel reddings hand in gothenburg sweden in 1993. i thank him for the music
Awesome. So cool.
Enjoy your comentary
Thank you, appreciate it.
Iam sure of The Tedpowers comment of what idea was being Conveyed
I read an article that Mitch stated he enjoyed Forum 70 and wished it was comerally Released so Iam not sure which Info is most Factual
I have the full verison of EZ Ryder if you would like too get it from that Forum Show 4/25/70 Thank you for posting this recording
That supposed to be the Best live verison of Starbangled Banner
Band of Gypsys was not released until May 1970
The EZ Ryder on that Gig the Solo is cut in 1/2
Have a better Recording of that Forum 70 that bootlegg is only So So quality’s
Monterey was a striking display of Jimi's talent...but more so his stage appearance than his actual playing, which was sort of sloppy.
I think Jimi displayed it all at Monterey. I notice some tuning struggles between Can You See Me and The Wind Cries Mary, mostly because he didn't tune in between the two songs. The Monterey Purple Haze is a fine version, very on point.
The Killing Floor intro was saying "fasten you seatbelts". In Johnny B Goode he pays homage to the Chuck Berry style and then launches sonic rockets higher and higher with each solo. I could have done without Wild Thing now, but I guarantee if I were in the 1967 audience.. wow. I agree, showmanship, energy, musicianship all set new standards for the future of rock n roll.
I think you'd be a bit sloppy too after a big hit of 1967 acid before walking on stage 😉🤣
Your shut in me No music?
Thanks almost watched it 😅👈 💨!!!….
Carmen was confused as to the date and place of that VW ride for burgers. It has been disproven.
So was Carmen actually talking about Sept 1968 when they were playing in the NW?
Hi Frank, great video! A lot of great information and content. Love it Thank you and keep spinning. Happy new year
Thank you Joey, big Tina fan. More great jazz to review coming in 2024.
@@FranksVinylReview sounds great. Thank you
I want to hear this. Years ago a friend told me about her parents, how they met each other at Jimi hendrix concert. She said they jumped into swimming pool, in front of stage. Immediately i thought of picture i had from hendrix issue in guitar magazine from 1987. Small picture hendrix on a 'wet stage' a swimming pool 2 feet below (amazing the fact no one was electricuted what the picture said) She told me her parentts would often tell this story to thier friends, she overheard when she was growing up. She had no idea where it was at. But she told me her parents had a blast that night, (like best day ever) Upon meeting each other first time. Hollywood bowl Jimi Hendrix.
Hi Danny, wow great story. I love hearing stories from those who saw Jimi in person.
@@FranksVinylReview Charles Cross, and Carmen Borerro . not Borlelo. Charles Cross is from Seattle, and really did a good job finding some extra info on Jimi.
thank you for your analysis. deep studies. good research and commentary !
Appreciate your feedback. Looking forward to the next one, 4/25/1970.
Hendrix reinvented himself with this group. Miles was a totaly different Drummer than Mitchell. More on the beat, tight and funky. This is Hendrix with heavy riffs, Delta Blues and future guitar. Thank you!
Reinvention was in his DNA.
We need to get Peter Jackson's super AI computer to clean up some of the Hendrix bootlegs out there: separate out the crowd noise and clean up the band into multi-tracks. There are some awesome performances out there that just need a little modern tech to apply a little TLC.
Agreed, there are so many great Audience shows, some sound better than others. Any favorite Audience Hendrix bootlegs/shows?
Such efforts seem to be happening already...I have many rather crude bootleg tapes of Jimi, obtained back in the 1970s....and now, frequently on UA-cam, I am hearing better, cleaned up versions of my old boots!...It is great!
@@curbozerboomer1773 Yes; but the laptop version of the clean up would not be able to compare with the state of the art cutting edge super computer AI that Jackson used. Jimi deserves the absolute best.
AMAZING SHOW! ❤
Frank, I really enjoyed this live performance and I know that there was nothing Eddie Kramer could do about it, but it was disappointing that Joni’s mic was turned up too loud during the show.
I hear you about Jimi's mic. With only a two track source, its difficult to get everything in and out as we'd like or expect. I'm sure EK did the best he could with what he had to work with. There are still a few multi track Hendrix shows that have not been released, hopefully we'll get those someday soon:)
@@FranksVinylReview yes, I definitely still want to buy those other shows too. I say we have to appreciate these for what they are and not for what they are not; that seems like a double-negative, but you know what I mean. 😂
Absolutely. Hoping Exp Hendrix LLC will release a Jimi Plays Berkeley box ie early + late shows + the soundcheck. San Diego 5/24/69 will be a nice stand alone release as well as the Royal Albert Hall shows from Feb 1969. Have you heard the 2/18/69 show that circulates via SBD?
Berkeley yes. The releases of that capture a "You're in the auditorium and he knows you're there with him" intimacy. That is what I hear without video to lead the mind. Each show has its own atmosphere for me. As a guitarist I know the feeling when people are joining your head space and they know when I'm talking to those people with the music. And I hear that in Jimi's delivery.
Hi Frank, nice video. You really know your subject. I agree, any new stuff is a bless. I wonder who is the woman talking to Jimi at the HB soundcheck ! Great show anyway. Stay tuned.
I have wondered about her!...She was taller than Jimi, must have been a model?
This is an inferior recording ( sound wise) it's not good quality sound at all and Jimi would be pissed over this being released. i would recommend many other live show with superiors sound quality. Berkeley 2nd Show....Songs For Groovy Children: The Fillmore East Concerts, The Jimi Hendrix Experience Live At Monterey. Live From .Winterland. 68 . Hendrix On The West are all excellent sound quality live Hendrix.
From an anthropological perspective, from a good sounding bootleg recording perspective if you will, its absolutely fine for what it is. I recommend Jimi Plays Monterey for the earliest live multi track recordings.
@@FranksVinylReview Let's get real...so many of Jimi's true fans want to hear most everything that was recorded!..Jimi is gone, but we are still here, digging his legacy. We have a right to hear whatever quality recordings that exist. It is our call at this point, not Jimi's call, or anyone else's call!
Hi .A good rewiew from you.But tell us about the sound quality of this record. Is the same of the others recordings of BN Classic Series or not? Thanks
