BBC Proms 2010 Sondheim at 80 Sunday from Sunday In The Park with George
I stole this from my partner's channel AntPDC. As I introduced him to Sondheim it seemed only fair =)

Ever since the mid 1990s Stephen Sondheim's songs have been heard more or less regularly at the Proms but never before has a whole concert been devoted to his work. Sondheim's 80th birthday provided the necessary impetus, and the BBC responded accordingly, putting on a spectacular celebration with Judi Dench, Maria Friedman, Simon Russell Beale and Bryn Terfel heading a seasoned musical theatre lineup that also included Daniel Evans, Julian Ovenden, Caroline O'Connor and Jenna Russell.
David Charles Abell conducted the BBC Concert Orchestra, and the specially constituted Proms Sondheim Ensemble and singers from the BBC Performing Arts Fund supplied the chorus.

Among the most important figures in 20th-century musical theater, Sondheim was praised for having "reinvented the American musical" with shows that tackled "unexpected themes that range far beyond the genre's traditional subjects" with "music and lyrics of unprecedented complexity and sophistication". His shows addressed "darker, more harrowing elements of the human experience" with songs often tinged with "ambivalence" about various aspects of life.

Sondheim 80th Birthday Celebration - Move On from Sunday in the Park with George

In 2010 Stephen Sondheim turned 80; it was celebrated both in New York's Lincoln Center and in London's Royal Albert Hall. Here's a video of Sunday in the Park with George's "Move on" performed by the two originals from the 1984 and 2005 productions. Both performers are fantastic and both concerts were superb.

Reading some of the comments here, I have concluded that there are people who would shit on the performances in a high school musical.

I was fortunate enough to have seen both the original production (twice) and the 2005 revival. They were both wonderful.

Wow, such disparity in opinions.. ALL 4 performers are amazing but each pair approaches it differently. I was always a BP fan, I mean really her witch performance in Into the Woods for myself is my favorite and Sunday in the Park with George is so moving. I never heard the UK version until now and both of them are beautiful and controlled.... here in NYC,.............. Yeah, we're a bit over the top..... oh well, that's how we roll over here in NYC ! Deal with it !
I saw Bernadette and Mandy in the original run of Sunday In The Park. I sat in my seat completely blown away and moved to tears. They are magical together.
Well, I'm crying. It has something to do with a love for the musical, and the magic of their performances when it first opened, the passion in their voices, and the time that has passed.
In the early 80’s I was living in an ASHRAM in upstate NY. MANDY PATINKIN CAME TO GIVE A ONE MAN SHOW FOR THE TEACHER AND STUDENTS THERE. I WAS IN FRONT, SITTING RIGHT At HIS FEET. IT WAS ONE OF THE MOST ECSTATIC MUSICAL EXPERIENCS IVE EVER HAD IN MY LLIFE. MANDY IS UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!
Some of these comments disrespect the Broadway legends that are Mandy and Bernadette. They a bit older than the second pairing and their voices can't exactly do what they used to do, and despite that they still sound lovely. They are the originals for a reason. The second pairing is marvelous as well. They blend so well together. You can like something without crapping on something else.

Okay, Mandy and Bernadette are older and the voices aren’t as solid in this (incredibly hard) piece but who really gives a *#%+? The history, the vibes are still there. And when M whispers “I love you” in B’s ear and she says it back to him at the end… love it!
I honestly think Bernadette’s voice sounds better. She has more strength.
That is, she’s improved since she was younger, which is a natural evolution when you sing for your entire life.
Just watched the original production with them and watching this now they are both SUCH good actors. Simply stunning. And great singers too.

This is a huge shift in the force. Sondheim is the Master. We lost our Ben O B one Canobe. The man was something so, so, special. Daiel Evans and jenna russel are just perfect. They nailed it. Bernadett is the Queen. She is Soundheims girl. She is my neighbor in nyc. I see her and she helped me adopt my first pit bull. I am her friend. And I see her greatness and i just am so moved when I see her. Just to think of "this"... this performance stands right there at the dog run with me.... yes that neighbor. Her and Mandy are great together. This is passion. This is real singers singing and feeling it all. Those words, those notes in that order will not happen again ever. You cannot recreate what Stephen did. That is how unique he was. Something that cannot ever come back again, you won't see performances like this again. It's lightening in a bottle. You can't touch this. Both scenes are perfection. Nothing is like SS. Nothing. These songs come from heaven. He was a god... not THE god... but a god all the same. When I really began to understand him I was in london. I went with Lorelie my girl friend at the time. We saw Into the Woods. And the magic was so magical. I was so moved and so over whelmed by this show that I will never forget. Anthony Newly sat right behind me. LOL... just remembered that... RIP SS. The entire world mourns ur passing.

If you don't feel something in your soul, chills, goosebumps, fear, excitement...anything...about the 2:00 minute mark through 2:40, you need more challenge in your life. Exceptional marriage of lyric/music/orchestra/performers.
I was fortunate to be in this audience. An extraordinary gathering of talents spanning the decades of Sondheim's work up until that time. The roster of names - accompanied by the NY Philharmonic was astonishing. And with any number of performers revisiting moments from their appearances in his shows - or taking on the challenge of presenting material not originally "theirs". All exciting, all worthy of show stopping. But this reunion and this expiration of art - was thrilling - breathtaking - moving and so very appropriate to celebrate Stephen Sondheim. I will treasure the emotions of being in attendance, and am so grateful this concert was preserved on video. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Jenna Russel and Daniel Evans: warm, intense, internalised, perfectly complementing each other in their sensitivity and deeply touching. the other two: far too much vibrato, too operatic, too loud, they do not complement each other, but each sing for themselves.
I tend to agree as both Mandy and Bernadette are quite the theatre type.

I've listened to the alternative recordings recently and was feeling that both casts were equal to the Mandy and Bernadette. That may have seemed true because the OBC recording doesn't catch them at their intense best. This proves once and for all that they will never be bettered in these roles, especially Bernadette. One word, WOW!
Mandy Pantankins" voice is stunning and appropriate for this performance. Why does it matter, just close your eyes and enjoy these 2 performers.
Now that i have heard both versions side by side i have to completely and honestly say i much much prefer Jenna Russell and Daniel Evans version, Bernadette has a very nasaly quality to her voice which i dislike and it seemed like she rushed the words out with no real feeling and the man (sorry don't know his name) was way too loud to compliment her whereas Jenna and Daniel's voices are smooth and beautiful and blend perfect and the slightly slower version conveyed so much more emotion like they were pouring their hearts out, their version really spoke to me, just my opinion but that's what i think xxx

it's not abt whose voice sounds the best. that's pop music probably. musical theatre is not just abt whose voice sounds nicer. it's how much they understand the character and how they interpret and make relatable for the audience. Peters and Patinkin both brought out so much complexity in their George and Dot that it's unrivaled up to this day. Watch their 1984 original production and you'll see why. Not just the clip of this song on youtube. Then you'll understand the reality and complexity of human frailty, the whys and the should haves, moving on and regret. Probably also because sondheim hand picked them and gave them notes on how the musical should be
They are both beautiful in their own way, but Bernadette and Mandy, as the originals, are still the gold standard for me. Just watch the video of the original production. It's breathtaking. And if you don't know Mandy Patinkin's name, you really need to do some reasearch!
The fuss about the performances! How mundane! Both performances are magnificent for the reason they are each individually played beautifully!
